1UP confirms reason for GameSpot editor was fired

1UP confirms through their own source that Jeff Gerstmann was fired for his negative review of Eidos Interactive's Kane & Lynch.

According to 1UP, Gerstmann already came under fired from Sony for scoring Ratchet & Clank Future a 7.5, for which he as the (former) GameSpot editorial director was responsible for overseeing and defending.

1UP's source also points to CNET's new management under the new executive VP Stephen Colvin as the real catalyst for the firing.

I hope this is the end of Gamespot as we know it. I hope the editors do something against it like giving 10/10 to every single game until they stop being controlled by gaming companies. But I don't want GS to die. I love the forums and the community there.

What GS did, even if I disagreed with many of Jeff's reviews, was very wrong.

Nice find but truly depressing news to see that indeed a review and publisher pressure.
Yet as an editorial head, he was indeed responsible for all other scores including Ratchet & Clank's and while I kinda liked him, GS could benefit from new direction.

8.1 - what's up with these publishers though?

Publishers are placing these games in the hands of reviewers, and using their muscle to coerce them into giving the game a good score so that people will buy the game. This way they can site on stage at e3 and other event and talk sh!t about their product, when they bullied the reviewers to get what they wanted. While lots of people are called for this guy's head and made immature and hurtful comments about his firing, I don't think is fair. One man lost his job so another one could feel better about a product whether it is warranted or not. Sh!t GS aren't the only reviewer that though K&L was crap. According to this article, he got fired because he didn't take up for sony's product and make sure ratchet got a higher score, coupled with another publisher getting mad because their garbage game didn't score as high as they wanted it to. SHOULD EVERTHING GET A 10, then what would be the point of reviews? Have anyone ever thought that being the person overseeing the process, he actually agreed with the score (Or should he blindly protect it since that what he was tasked to do)?

Don't get me wrong, I think RC should have scored higher also, however I am not a professional reviewer. This is simple backdoor politics, the publisher were jumping in the a$$ of the higher ups at gamespot and they needed a scapegoat.

What this has done for me is given me an opinion now, that I will rent all games from now on and rate it my damn self. Since the official reviewers are being pimped by the publishers and will be fired due to political pressure through advertisements and the good ole boys network if they don't comply.

This is just sad news.

Great comment and points.

Indeed we have to try all games for ourselves and rate them. There are 2 huge factors here: 1.Crediblity of review sites and mags which is at it's lowest low right now. 2.Personal taste and preferance.

I'm giving all games chance and will keep trying them all. I didn't think I could like Conan but playing it proved me worng and it was actually kinda fun. Same goes for Zack & Wiki which after trying, I came to love it.

I agree 100% kinda sad though. Man, where can you look today for a company that still has its dignity through pure "honesty & integrity".

I think those type of companys are long gone. Hell, banks are not even your friend anymore. Back in the day, they relied on deposits from the people. Hell, now they make more investments and have gotten richer off of "OUR" money than we can.

If a writer has to worry about getting fired for reviewing a game then maybe we should believe any reviews. I usually just watch the gameplay videos and if it looks ok then the game is probably awesome. if the Video looks Awesome then I am a little more critical because I don't want to be let down. Then I might read some reviews, but read the lowest scored mid scored and a high scored one.

Edit: I just saw that he is the one who gave Ratchet and Clank a 7.5 Screw the bastard. Fire his A$$

When will these idiots ever learn? This is the main reason why all the top reviewers are losing credability. The sad part is that it's only a matter of time once they own the reviewers that they'll start spamming on peer review sites like gamerankings.com . Why can't these fools just put all that money in bribes and ads into developing a quality product that'll score a 'REAL' high review. I swear, it's almost as if these educated types that run marketing are f'n *offensive word for mentally challenge*, just because ford overhypes it's midline cars don't make em worthy of high reviews. The same can go for any of the many crap games that are overhyped and pay for their high reviews.

MS owns the company that owns GameSpot. Obviously they want their influence to further their own sales. The mass media who accepts huge gifts and advertising revenue is not about to bite the hand that feeds it. It will wag its tail and beg for more - and rather fire the employee that might cause the tap to close even a little bit.

Review sites like this lost their influence when they overplayed their hands with the 10/10 for mediocre titles and 7.5 for great titles. They took the money and gifts. Now they must take the hiding that comes with the package. They betrayed their market. They are supposed to give a good guidance to the gamer, not be an extension of the marketing department for the highest bidder.

this stood out to me bigtime, to expect every AAA should get a great score b/c it has more advertisements than other games is just f*cken crazy, i dont think he should have gotten fired if he fully reviewed games in a non biased way but if any reviewer reviews a game & gives it a high score b/c they got $ somehow for giving a game a high score or b/c the game has "more" advertisements is just absurd & wrong. the whole point of reviewing a game is to "inform" the public about the game as best as possible

so i know for sure i can ignore any review from them as their reviews are based not on how good a game is, but on what a company has paid them to tell us.

The people that called for his firing and those that bash websites/mags that give "low" scores to their precious games lack the maturity to realize that they're doing more harm than good. Mags and websites that will give out fake high scores out of fear doesn't benefit us.
Those that bash EGM (1up) are fools and are too young and dumb to realize that EGM is the only magazine that's had the balls to stand up to a big publisher. In the SNES era Capcom threw a hissy fit and pulled all of their advertising from EGM because they didn't like the scores they handed out to Super Street Fighter. EGM stood their ground and refused to change their scores. The game wound up not selling nearly as many copies as Capcom printed, and most wound up in the bargain bin. Soon after Capcom was running ads again in EGM. Kudos to companies that stand their ground and shame on the immature gamers that can't handle their favorite games not getting the scores they "think" they deserve.

Why should an Isomnic game get a 10 out of 10?

I played the R&C demo on my PS3 and it was fun but nothing that certainly makes you wanna shout about your PS3. I think that R&C deserves at least an 8 to 8.5

If he was giving an honest review then why was he kicked out of his job?

This whole reviewing system and sites have gone to the crapper, I know that money rules alot of things but why should reviews of games be given a 10 out of 10 because of a company's great game history or because its suppose to be an AAA title. I want reviews to give games a fair and good score, Uncharted does not deserve a 10 out of 10, nor did Halo 3.

I'm sorry, but if you know the game your publishing is crappy or at least average, you should take steps to make sure the sequal or the next game you put out is better, not pressure websites to fire whomever did the review.
