Tony Hawks Project 8: Online for 360, Not for PS3.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 is built with full online capabilities for Xbox 360, including support of Live, classic two-player challenges, a new game called Walls (which plays like Snake or Tron), and up to eight-player online games. But Project 8 is not online for PlayStation 3. Only within the last three weeks has Neversoft received its PS3 beta kits, a black horizontal box about one foot wide by two feet long and two inches deep, with a slew of buttons and dials on its front deck. Neversoft is confident the PS3 version of the game will ship at launch in November, but it still hasn't received all of the software libraries and has no indication of how the online components will work on PS3, so it's not offering them.

That's stupid. I don't understand why they're just now getting their beta kits, why not at least delay it a few months to get the online components in there, or add the components later since all PS3s will come with harddrives. Big lame from me. The game looks sweet though.

probably because like us they know nothing about the ps3 online componant. obviously they have alot of online pieces built (ie 360 version). delay= lost money. blame the bean counters for them not waiting.

Didn't Sony hand out 1000 dev kits or something? I thought I read that somewhere. Anyways they can't delay this game for sony just for the fact that it would be yet another delay for the ps3 and they don't want that. Online is huge, if you have ever played an xbox 360 game you will know. Once single player is done, there is nothing else to do with the game unless it has online. If Halo 2 didn't have online, it wouldn't be as popular.

i am a 360 head but I have to agree with you that online for this game is uneccessary. skateboarding is a solo sport so why should the game be anything else its not football. The only concern for PS3 Heads is how many other developers are thinking the same thing as Neversoft. I have to say all this negative news is actually making me want a PS3 now cause I am just damn curious how they are gonna pull all this off. Its gonna be a hobby itself tracking down patches and downloading updates. It will be the gift that keeps on giving.

I have a 360 along with plenty of games for it. I have a live account and enjoy marketplace very much. I have games that have live and do love multiplayer action and I also have games that don't require multiplayer for fun. All I'm saying is that for a skateboarding game which is basically how high of a score can you get is not really a big deal coming to an online market.

you guys will a defend a boo boo no matter what happens, this is a boo boo, why wouldnt you want online attached to a agmae twhen anohter system has the same game with online capabilities. your losing some part of the game, Kiddies the fact remains that online is part of this gen in games and this is just another bump in the road for ps3, so what if half the games at launch dont have full online capabilties is that still ok for you. Onjline is not the only reason to by a game but its expected now and every 360 game has some sort of live feature and its expected.

You know what gets me about this? Neversoft has no idea how Sony online is going to work and it's two months from launch. Doesn't that seem a little off? According to Sony, they supposedly have a LIVE killer, but what, they've yet to figure it out? I don't want to start another flame war, but I'm getting the impression more and more that Sony says their online is free because, basically, there isn't one. I know Sony said they are leaving it up to developers (like they did with the PS2), but it seems a little odd that Neversoft knows absolutely nothing this late in the game. Insomniac has all these grand dreams for Resistance's online, so do they know something Neversoft doesn't, or are they just blowing more Sony smoke? Just an observation.

10 - This is just the beginning...

Of the farce that is the Sony Network Platform. They want to copy all of the features of Xbox Live, but not pay for them (by passing the cost to consumers like Microsoft does.) So this type of thing will be the result of Sony offering its online service for free. Sure, to most consumers, a free online service that mimics Xbox Live seems like the Icing on the over-hyped PS3 cake. But you CANNOT, WILLNOT and NEVER get something for nothing. Microsoft, when it brought out Xbox Live, knew that eventually Nintendo and Sony would both have some kind of online service, so if they could have offered live for free, they would have. But the hit that all three console manufacturers take in hardware sales (the loss of money) makes it very hard to offer what Xbox Live does for free, and what Sony will NOT be able to match. They basically have told developers that they (the developers) have to offer online voice chat, leaderboards, gamertags, acheivements, stat tracking, etc., everything that LIVE does, but they have to figure it out and pay for it themselves. They will eventually give developers tools and guidelines on the PS3 dev kits, but that apparently isn't available yet. Unless Sony is willing to fund its online system itself, a lot of developers will follow Neversoft's lead and leave online out of their games-- especially with all the questions surrounding the PS3-- will it really launch on time, how many units will REALLY be available, what will be the failure rate of such a high-tech machine, etc. If Sony Online is and remains a free service, fewer PS3 versions will offer online and it will forever be inferior to Xbox Live.

I know it doesn't seem like that big of a blow to some of you. After all, it's not like the series is renowned for its online component. Nonetheless, it does prove that Sony's online ambitions may be a little too vague and ambiguous for developers to commit resources to. Let's hope this isn't the start of a trend.

Personally, I think MS launched the 360 so early that Sony just wasn't prepared for it. I think they saw the next-gen cycle being another year or two in the future. But once MS was out there moving units and picking up valuable marketshare in the next-gen market, I think Sony had to really jumpstart the PS3 project, and as they rush to get their product to market, they're having to cut corners. I think MS may have undone Sony's vise-grip on the market by starting the next-gen cycle themselves. Everything else has just been Sony slitting its own throat by making promises they had no hopes of keeping. They'll pull through, but the cost will be huge.

Will the rest of the game be rushed on the PS3 now? If they JUST got Dev kits.... I dont see the harm in delaying the PS3 version a month or 2, not like there will be million of PS3 systems out on the market anyways at launch. I do have some interest in the online aspect of this game, American Wasteland was very lame online but this has potential.

Also I would assume the PS3 version of the game will be cheaper right? Its not the full game..

They not only had the dev-kits, they would also have to set up their own servers, because that, to my knowledge, is how the PnP will work. Microsoft has their 360 dedicated servers, which all games go through. In order to have online for PS3, the developers/publishers will have to have their own servers. One problem i see with this method is how long will their servers support the online for their games? They will release new versions and want the servers to run the online for those. So about a year after each game is released, it may not be supported online =(.

It was my understanding that the Playstation Network Platform would have centralized servers like 360, but that developers could choose to add on their servers to the network because it uses the standard internet and not a separate private network.

I'm no brain by any standards, but this does seem to be a bit unsettling...and then I read this article about Xfire and Dark Kingdom and now this article about No Online for the Tony Hawk 8 on the PS3 has me more leary about the PS3's online service. I'm sure that it's all going to be worked out in the long run however some of the questions from this website gave me another view of things. Just wish I could get some real answers.

This is just another reason why sony will delay again there USA launch and more.
I'd just admit if I was sony that there still not ready yet, then everyone would relax and see what they do next year. But to say were launching worldwide, and then.......well you know the story.
sony has some issues and sounds like there working on them, but there still behind and much to do, much to fix so I'd just be honest or risk losing much (more)face with the world come november.

20 - Satisfaction...and regret

With bad news continually flowing to and from the Sony camp, I'm conflicted on whether to feel joy or regret.

Joy and a sort of twisted satisfaction because Sony has become so arrogant to delude themselves to think that another company could ever dethrone their position in the gaming world. This scenario seems strangely reminiscent. Oh yeah, the exact thing happened to Nintendo when they got so arrogant and full of themselves to the point that they let the upstart Playstation dominate gaming for over a decade.

The regret I feel is that without great competition, the gaming industry will fall into a malaise. Here's hoping that Nintendo will make a comeback to provide a sufficient challenge to Microsoft and force them to continue their amazing run.

Maybe Sony will eventually return to it's former glory. But right now, from where I'm sitting, Sony is beat. Game over.

it also meant that dev kits were affected since they have internal blu-ray burners. It also makes sense that Sony would first allocate the kits to their top 1st and 2nd party developers, with 3rd party developers following afterwards.

Then again, they said that the software wasn't up to date, which is supposedly the reason no online features were being implemented. Wierd, considering that the guys making Full Auto 2 had their game up and running on the Playstation Network Platform without a hitch like a month ago...

?

Either way, I definitely want to try out the new gameplay mechanics in this title. I gave up on Tony Hawk after purchasing part 4, mostly 'cause the whole concept was getting kind of tiring. I always prefered having distinct, tight levels (tony hawk 2 was definitely the best) and the decision to switch to free-roaming didn't really appeal to me. Part 2 also had the best level editor. Didn't allow some of the neat features of part 3 & 4, but the ease of use and existence of certain objects like the crossbars made level designing fun as hell.

But controlling the skateboard in mid-air with your analog sticks? Heh, I definitely need to get involved with this franchise again. Kind of sad that there's no online, but with split-screen multiplayer, I'll live.

There's plenty of people here that said the same accusations I did countless times over the past 3 or 4 months. Why didn't you respond earlier? Why only go after me?

We saw almost every single one of his 8~10 screennames that night (the mods worked their magic i guess) and your's didn't pop up amongst them, so stop worrying about it. Hell, I've been accused multiple times but never made a scene. If an apology will help you sleep better, you've got one. That's right, I apologize. But seriously, get over it.
