Research: Orange Box Eating into Halo 3 Sales

One industry watcher says the increasingly crowded shooter market is falling victim to some significant sales cannibalization among top-tier titles.

With shooters like BioShock, Halo 3, The Orange Box and Call of Duty 4 hitting the market within close range of one another, companies have had to convince consumers to choose their game over competitors. After all, not all shooter fans can drop a few hundred dollars at once.

1.1 - Market for 1st person games ===> small

Hate to break it to you guys but the market for 1st person games isn't that big. That's why you're seeing this cannabalism take place, all these 1st person games competing in a limited market.

Out of the top 30 selling video games of all-time (this 'top 25' list actually lists like 30 games), only 2 games are first person games (Halo 2 and Golden-eye). And BTW, both those games are at the absolute bottom of the list (a prestigious list to be on but they're still at the bottom).

"more games to choose from equals other titles selling less". it was so hard to believe at first...thx for reassuring me buddy. ::rolleyes::

HL:2 was one of the best games ever created, box that with 2 mini sequels, and two more games its a freaking homerun. i still kinda dislike valve...but they have made some great games. cant wiat to get Orange Box for my Ps3 :)

I´m so going to have fun with Orange Box, Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4.
I got Halo 3 and Call of Duty 4. Just Orange box left.
I´m not just favoring one game. I go for the gut felling when I choose the game to play for the moment. And after a while I switch to another game, and then another. So I can be good at everyone of them.

Why should people start liking a game they don't like just because other people do like it?

I don't know 600,000 people playing it, but, for my money, Goldeneye is still the most multiplayer fun, even if I have to have friends over to play it. Halo just pales in comparison.

It's nothing against Halo, but it's nothing terribly special, and I don't see why I should buy into the hype when I have something I think is better.

Call of Duty 4 is probably gonna do very well for itself as well on all three platforms. Orange Box will probably sell like crap on the PS3, won't come out until December or later. And Halo 3 and Bioshock have already done well for themselves. The remaining FPS's this year are Crysis, UT3, Haze, Blacksite, Timeshift (PS3) and early next year is Turok. Jeez a hell of a lot of shooters.

Actually all these games are cannibalizing their own sales. Seriously, BioShock, Halo 3, Orange Box and COD4 are 4 top notch games all released closelt and not only they'll hurt each other's sales, they'll kill the small chances of less famous FPS games like Jericho, BlackSite and Soldier of Fortune 3 (While I like all 3 games, Mostly hope the last one sells really good and we get a full budget SOF4 though).

It's all games at this point, not just the FPS. A TON of great games are comming, and, while the FPS player may be more likely not to stray from his genre as much, making those sales more competitive, there is no way anyone can say games, even among different types, aren't eatting the sales of each other this holiday season.

Bioshock is eatten by Halo 3, sure, but not unlike Halo 3 is eatten by Uncharted, or Uncharted is eatten by Mario, or Mario is eatten by Halo 3.

Good advertising is very important, for everyone, this year.

There not Halo sales until its sold. Orange Box, COD4, and later UT3 and Haze deserve their days in the sun. Halo3 hasn't been like Halo2. It might have sold heaps, (and still be selling) but the buzz was gone after about a week. It was just too much more of the same and there are to many other good shooters around to care.

16 - So far, my favorite is Half Life 2.

I loved Halo 3, Bioshock(haven't finished yet, but awesome) COD 4 is good too. However, nothing is as fun as Half Life 2. Everyone touts graphics on COD4, and the water in Bioshock. They're great, but at least HL2 actually has water that reflects what's above it. That can't be said of COD4. That's not that big of a deal, but kinda irritating. Regardless, HL2 is the best.
