Halo 3 first-day sales hit $194 million

Microsoft Corp's Halo 3 video game set an opening-day US sales record of $194 million, outdoing any video game or movie debut and giving the company's money-losing entertainment unit a strong boost toward profitability.

Alien-shooting fans also surged onto Microsoft's Xbox Live online service. More than a million members took up virtual arms in Halo 3 in the first 20 hours on September 25, the day the game debuted, Microsoft said yesterday.

Halo 3 easily surpassed its predecessor, 2004's Halo 2, which racked up $142 million on the first day. The $68 game also beat the $67 million US opening-day movie box office record, set by Spider-Man 3.

2 - I have no idea what your talking about but I wish I could help you.

Need to actually get into the game I tried to play this game with members of this site and I got my ass handed to me.

Mass Effect and Ace plus others will help MSFT in ways I'm only starting to understand.

2.1 - I should be on tonight if I don't have to much work to do.

I didn't beta Halo 3 I was to busy in a beta with another game I can't discuss, so all I have are the skills from Halo 2 and the little bit I have played of 3 (work work work) anyway I'm off for a while so Ill be on everynight around primetime. IM me for my tag, I used to put my tag in my profile but I had a Droid stalker so it's gone.

Beating out EVERY video game and movie debut. Looks like we have a #1 here! Very Impressive! I feel sorry for all the rabid sony fanboys that are to stubborn and is unfortunatly missing out on all the excitement. Sucks for you guys.

5.1 - Your Right.

You can't compare a movie and a game unless it's in the form of entertainment which is VERY generic at best. Not to mention I keep seeing Spiderman 3 batted around from the other posts. The average Spiderman movie cost over $200,000,000 to make. Spiderman 3 is estimated at 258,000,000 according to www.imdb.com. But other industry insiders (google it) put Spiderman 3 more at the $300,000,000 mark or above and it went on to make 900,000,000 total worldwide box office. It's estimate Microsoft spent $60,000,000 to make Halo 3. What I'm saying is that the return on Halo 3 (if these numbers are correct) would make Spiderman 3 jealous as far as fist day sales are concerned.

You could also say Games do not appeal to as many people as movie goers. Leave please... Money is all that matters not how its earned.

Mass Effact will be the western FF and will kill most other games in sales. Ace will give all the flight fans what they want. Naruto will handle all the RPG anime action fans fixes. PGR4 will do good and the rest on the exclusive and Multi platform games will make a killin on MSFT's plaforms. The almost 200 million in the first day of Halo 3 is just chump change to investors. I hear Sony's Halo spartan sheild huming warning in coming death if they don't do something fast.

Considering the game is $60 and with the other editions out their running at a higher price, hitting that mark shouldnt be hard. I think its funny that they compare box office records with gaming sales when the price of a ticket to the price of a game of this generation is a huge difference.

8.3 - There is no other way to compair games to movies accept with sales

Movies sell tickets at the theater then they get rentals and DVD sales games just get rentals and sales. There are more movie goers than gamers so this is a huge step for gaming, some rock head gamers don't understand that all this is gooooooood for this buisness.

You know what makes these numbers impressive? The fact that Halo 3 beat out Halo 2 by this margin but when Halo 2 released the Xbox's installed base was nearly three times that of the 360. Wow just wow, imagine this games legs. It'll probably stop selling at about 15-20 million copies. Job well done Bungie. Oh and btw what happened to the 170 million figure?

I say 600,000 dollars compared to Halo 3's....194,000,000 . Lol....WOW

I believe that one day there will be an award called...

The Halo award of excellence. Its definately in a class of its own and absolutely nothing compares to it.

But just like to say congratulations to MS and Bungie especially. This is truly a very impressive sales figure. Halo 3 got 9.5 from IGN so i am sure its a great game and will be playing on my friends x360 soon.
