Bizarre Creations Responds To PGR4 and DVD Capacity
105
Word that Project Gotham Racing 4 had to scrap content to fit the capacity of the game on a DVD game disc on the Xbox 360 went ablaze through the 'net in the last day. Not so speedy, says Bizarre Creations today. To the point, quoting Bizarre Creations: "We've never had to cut content to fit on the disc, and we probably never will." The weather system is cited as the focus for Bizarre Creations this time around in PGR4. A series of screens were provided to backup the variety of lighitng/weather conditions.

But wouldn't they want to say these words to please MS. They are exclusive right. I don't know much about how much more they could have fit on DVD, but, really, what else were they supposed to say? Just a thought.

Man that game looks better every time i see it. To bad its a arcade style game and not a sim. Anyways alot of us know there was no cause for it to not fit. It just didn't make any sence when we first heard about it. Real time lighting and other things would of fixxed it, if what they where saying was true! To be honest i would of believed it more if they said they had to cut down on the weather effects on the maps. Thats where i see them needing to make new textures with things like snow covers and such!

for this generation just fine IMO, the 8th generation i don't think it will make the cut but i'm okay with it now, i remember an interview with bioware back in i think 06 maybe 05, they laughed when someone asked if they feel the need to use two disc, but now they realize its cutting it close

Developers, naturally, would like things to be easier for them in having a larger storage capacity. However, those who work on the 360 either do not need it now, or have to work with what's there.
They deserve credit for this achievement.
But anyone who implies that DVD is enough for this generation is delusional. Although the sheer size of Blu-Ray is not justified, 9 odd Gigs in itself will not be enough for future games, assuming the developers want to make bigger and better games.
Having said that, compression technology is continuing to improve so the need for a higher capacity media may not be as soon as people think.
However, compression in itself means the loss of certain quality aspects that could be related to "High Definition next-gen experience" such as the 7.1 uncompressed sound we are coming to see in certain PS3 titles.
Do not forget Microsoft refused to include a HD-DVD drive into their machine for cost reasons and the fact that of data stream from the drive not being fast enough, resulting in slow loading times. This would mean they'd have to increase their HDD unit space to compensate, seeing a large cache for developers to use in relation to loading times, and would have led to the demise of the Xbox 360 Core idea.
As a result, they have responded to Sony's claims by saying DVD is suitable for next-gen games, to justify their decision. And although this may be true for now, you cannot deny that if the price was right for them - they would have included some kind of larger format drive into the design.
All in all, so far the DVD camp are holding their ground but I question for how long.

But that is the point. Next-gen may not always be interpreted as photo realistic graphics, especially for a game that is meant to be cartoony. If you wanted impressive visuals, you only need to look at another dragon game titled Lair, which is to be over 20GB already. The developers of Blue Dragon, however wanted to add something extra to the experience and that was high quality HD-Cut scenes for the eye to enjoy in the middle of gaming.
Take this away from Blue Dragon, and it loses one of its main fundamental appealing points.
Although it does not take anything from the gameplay itself, it is part of the game, and the fact that you have to replace discs for simply this aspect may not be welcoming to the eyes of most people. However, it is the game and it was the design of the development.
What does teach us and developers?
"No HD-Cut scenes or prepared to offer this game in multiple discs!"
It is limiting however you look at it. Whereas if they had a larger storage medium, the only thing you'd have to say to them is "go ahead guys, go nuts". With DVD, sooner or later developers will have to think inside the box, so to speak, or remove ideas from the actual project because of the 9GB limit.

You make some good points and I agree with most of you said. However...
"However, compression in itself means the loss of certain quality aspects that could be related to "High Definition next-gen experience" such as the 7.1 uncompressed sound we are coming to see in certain PS3 titles."
As an audiophile with a very critical ear, i'd have to say that the difference between uncompressed PCM and properly encoded MP3 audio of 320kbps and above is marginal as best. Especially on the low to mid end home theatre systems owned by most users.
However, anything less than 320kbps and I do start to notice a loss in quality. Ultimately, I guess it's down to the developers to find an happy medium between size and quality. But the only real advantage I see that uncompressed audio has over high bitrate MP3, are the marginal savings in CPU time gained by not having to decompress the audio.
Still, if you have the space you might as well use it.

Hell no, we all knew MS would contact bizarre and get them to do some damage control. Letting the truth out is the last thing MS wants to happen. Too late. No amount of PR spin is really going to change things.
edit (dude below me) Whatever they publish their games, instead of being first party. Either way the cat is out of the bag. Of course the game fits, just not all that they wanted to included. It fits because it has to.
I'm sure you'll spend all of your bubbles doing damage control for Microsoft. How much do they pay you to post lies here? Or worse are you a stupid MS sheep that does it for free while they bend you over. I bet #2 as you do a horrible job and everybody knows you are full of crap. I even mentioned this in the post to do with the origanal article. Everyone got bent out of shape over something that they had no idear was actually writem by someone working on the game. I mean IF they had to leave something out of the game do you think that someone working on it would mention it on the net. I mean thats like saying oh yes this game we are making hasnt got everything on it and is gimped to start with thats not good busness sence plaus when people spend the time and effert on games they are not going to be running there mouth about the bad side of it are they. I think sometimes people just write fake stories just to start all this kind of crap and and knock the system they dont have. Why? hell if I know why do people who have no plan on getting one type of system feel the need to comment loads about that systems downside or teh games for that system only. Goodgaming everyone

Blind fan boy. What he says is true. Current generation title like Resitance and Lair uses 20GB+. Hideo Kojima asked for 50GB Blu Ray for MGS4.
Rockstar have problems to fit game on 1 DVD. PGR4 too now. No multiply disk don't work with certain game types. Imagine switching disk ever race or corner.
Final Fantasies always where massive I bet it will use loads of data.
Hedio Kojima said no way he is down grading MGS4 for X360. He'll need to lower graphics and make it on 10 DVDs.

"DVD size is absolutely not a factor that we consider when DESIGNING our games... and PGR4 is no exception. DVD9 gives us more than we need to create a fabulous experience for you guys."
I don't see a denial in there, just a little PR cover up to get MS off their backs. The only thing to take away from this is that they don't "design" games around the storage media (duh), and they can deliver a fabulous experience (whether it's day or night fixed it could still be "fabulous")
I would say they've been pretty close to MS in the past, and of course want to stay that way in the future. The Club is the only PS title I could see that they're working on (on 360&PC also), so I would suggest they have more to loose getting MS mad at them than making Sony happy with them.

...they actually said that LAST generation. They said something along the lines of "We just hope they don't say, it's dvd again"
Rockstar haven't said anything like that since and they can't because they're making a game for the 360 and they have to keep quiet about problems on microsoft's behalf. That doesn't mean there aren't problems
But you know what, if YOU'RE happy with using dvd's, and storage restrictions don't concern you then whatever because the ps3 fans are surfing the tides of progress and we'll wave at you when you're a speck in the horizon

19.2 - Precisely,
I'm sure Bizarre Creations will do a fantastic job with PGR4, but if you tell them for PGR5 they will be given a larger storage medium to work on, they'd jump with joy as they could add more to the game and make it even more of value.
Rockstar in particular will most likely be the developers who are tested the most, but no one will be surprised if they produced GTA4 on two discs. In fact, it is probably expected to some people.
But if you had another studio, with some of the Rockstar team, making GTA4 dedicated to the PS3 version - then you'd find two different games. The fact that they have said the two will be identical, means sadly for PS3 owners and Rockstar themselves, they won't have a larger a game they originally wanted.

This doesn't surprise me because with all the lighting effects developers can do now they can just dynamically change the look of a wall, building etc. Now you don't have to rely on a 'night' texture or 'day' texture.
