90% Lost Planet, Dead Rising Sales Outside Japan
31
Capcom's been one of the biggest success stories on the Xbox 360 so far. The traditionally Japanese-focused company has seen enormous sales on the platform through Dead Rising and Lost Planet. Much of that, however, has come from sales in the United States and Europe -- as much as 90% of sales totals, actually.

what makes you say that? All i see there is that Capcom sold a ton more worldwide.
P.S. Considering Japan was the land of PS2 the fact that its only out selling the 360 by 7000 units means its doing pretty terrible as well

I have to disagree Conan. I don't see anything in the article that says the games are selling poorly overall, just poorly in Japan. I'm pretty sure if a company sells 1 million copies of a game they're happy, regardless of where the sales came from.

One bubble wonder-boy. You embarrass all PS3 owners acting like this. You can keep FF on the PS3 because there are a lot of better(yes I said it) titles coming out on the 360. I would never trade Mass Effect for an FF game so chose your console or own both and have them all..

6 - why
Why do i care how many games and consoles are sold in japan. I dont live there, and I am not benefiting from how much money microsoft makes. If they don't want a 360, who cares. I could honestly care less if the 360 doesn't sell one console ever again in japan.
And to be honest, i could care less if the 360 loses this whole console war and doesnt sell any more hardware. Becuase I am very content with my 360 and I love xbox live, not to mention all the great games coming out this year for the 360.
I am sorry, but I do not see this big fasicination of being a fanboy and caring how well your console sells. you don't see the money.

7 - Japan is not the center of the gaming universe any longer
While there are still many great developers in Japan the market is not as strong/influential as it was last-gen. You can have multi-million selling titles and have it flop in Japan. I hope Capcom see's this as an opportunity to develope more Western oriented games and at the same time continue to develope more asian centric titles as well. They can have the best of both worlds. Neither of these games had men dressed up like women or any bouncy boobs or raunchy anime so I didn't expect it to fair well in Japan. As I would never purchase the games that are popular in Japan. Take something like Wartech, complete garbage imo but the japanese love it. Congrats to Capcom and here's to DR 2 and Lost Planet 2 =)

8 - it's nice they are making money
but they risk alienating their own country with western games.it leaves it open to let konami, namco, nintendo, sony and sega to dominate japan.
capcom of old used to make games that had world appeal.
every country has horror fans.every country has fighting fans.every country has action fans.but changing their strategy has made their sales lopsided.
changing their strategy has let silent hill and fatal frame take the lead for horror.
changing their strategy has let the vf series and the doa series take the lead for fighting.
changing their strategy has let ninja gaiden and god of war take the lead for action.
they need to rethink their strategy.

8.1 - Not really....
"they risk alienating their own country with western games."
-No its just that those titles were "new" IP's that appealed to western audiences, which is why they enjoyed great sales outside of Japan. Japanese will continue to buy Capcom titles that offer the same franchises they have always loved, just like the other companies you mentioned, all of them have a few games that the Japanese want. In fact in this Famitsu Most Wanted Chart ending on May 10th, Biohard 5(RE: 5) was rated as the 3rd most desired game in all of Japan, only behind DQ and FF and their Monster Hunter 3 is actually at #5. So looking at this list compared with other Japanese videogame companies, it looks like Capcom is going to do as good or better than some of the others you mentioned back home.
I definitely don't understand why you believe "expanding" your target audience with different IP's can "alienate" your home fanbase, its not like making something else means you are going to drop all the other franchises that you made in the past. It looks like Capcom will make huge profits in all the markets so I would say thats a great strategy....why people would rather "hate" than give credit where credit is due is just sad.

American (and European) gamers love Japanese games- people are trampling each other to import tons of games all the time. Why can't the Japanese like our games too? *insert shrug* Even when Japanse companies that normally kick major ass make "Western" games, they don't sell.
Does Guitar Hero II even sell in Japan? Checked- apparently not. Yet, any game remotely like this (Bemani) sells incredibly in America- even when it has to be imported. Wow.

9.1 - Well fortunately the industry has grown.........
Well see that's kind of what I'm getting at when I say the Japanese will buy original established franchises and of course they tend to love the games from homegrown companies that many westerners would consider wierd. The big franchises like FF, MGS, DMC and RE are popular with both audiences but there are tons of Japanese games that are ONLY popular in Japan since they really don't appeal much in the west.
Like I've said before its just a different mindset that they have in general when it comes to gaming, they do NOT "hate" foreign games, they are just in love with homegrown stuff...and its NOT about quality because Western dev's are making some of the best games ever. The reality is that the market has grown much larger and with the introduction of so many new quality western dev's a company can be very successful without doing well or selling at all in Japan.

10 - reason being feral
is that making resident exclusive to gamecube cost them.
not making a true successor to street fighter cost them.
not keeping up with where action games were going and disbanding clover(hideki, shinji, etc.)cost them.
i'm down with new ips.but the proof is in the numbers.90% of their sales were abroad.90% of it.that's lopsided to me.
street fighter was world reknowned.it appealed to everyone.now where is it?i'm just hoping the downloadable new high def street fighter kicks them back in gear.make what EVERYONE likes.not just niche markets.

10.1 - Still don't see your point....
"reason being feral is that making resident exclusive to gamecube cost them."
[[Well they made RE:5 multi, so they won't have that problem this gen.]]
"not making a true successor to street fighter cost them."
[[Fighters are not big sellers for anybody right now....that genre has fallen waaaaay off for everybody, yes some are still making good one's but that genre has become pretty stale by todays standards. When was the last really "groundbreaking" great Fighter?]]
"not keeping up with where action games were going and disbanding clover(hideki, shinji, etc.)cost them."
[[And "not keeping up with" this game or that game can be applied to alot of companies (Sega, with Sonic is one example) that have games that have lost their "flavor."]]
"i'm down with new ips.but the proof is in the numbers.90% of their sales were abroad.90% of it.that's lopsided to me."
[[And again the sales were lopsided for two very good reasons which I'm sure Capcom isn't surprised.....
1. Its only on xbox 360 which is far behind in Japan so what do you expect?...hell more than 90% of the hardware sales are OUTSIDE of Japan, correct?...hmmm, which if you I think about it is less than 10% of the hardware sales for 360 are in Japan, so that means a larger percent Japanese gamers brought it than Western gamers when you compare the install base for both -WOW, I hadn't even thought about that until YOU brought it up, THANKS.
2. It was created to appeal to western gamers tastes(majority who own a 360). -The thing that you are overlooking is that the 90% sales that it did make in the western market more than compensates for the lack of sales in the Japanese market. -In other words they made plenty of money even without Japan...if you honestly look at it, Japanese gamers as a whole aren't buying alot of games these days, some of the software sales charts I've seen over the last 6 months have been really low and even if you do get a significant percentage of Japanese gamers to buy your game, in reality compared to the Euro and American market its small in terms of sales.]]
-OK, so I still don't see your point, maybe we just disagree.....because I think that targeting a different demographic with something that may or may not sell well at home is a good thing, especially when you still take care you home support with the games you "know" they want.

I dont think Final Fantasy's are no where near as good as it was in the PSone days. I think they need to stop, their killing the series with this action crap thats not what made it popular. I rather see Square Enix just make remakes for the new consoles they would see more SALES then the new FF.

ha, ha NO sh!t more often than not multiplatform games always sell more than exclusives, listen I won't go into the many factors of why Capcom went with the 360 but it wasn't some big conspiracy(PS3 wasn't even going to be out when it originally was suppose to be released).....and to call it a "non-failure" just shows your bias since both sold over a million which is alot better than alot of games in any market. -lmfao, again just give credit, where credit is due.

12.2 - not so sure of that.
maybe capcoms sales are down because their games have been on the slide except re4 for the cube. If they put that type of effort in for the next version its gunna generate a lot of hype. Capcom spreading their wings cant be a bad thing but there is a cultural thing underpinning these ventures to the west. lost planet was OK, thats it and so was dead rising. they sold because 360 owners had nothing like that previously and it was exclusive to a console that wasn't strong on home turf. People in asia may feel like capcom have sold out where as westerners point to making more money as only goal. To a gamer it shouldn't be neither of these but thats human nature. I've heard listened and read american peoples beefs with US developers making Sony exclusive. because its almost seen as not supporting you own so to speak. thank good i'm european. I have no allegencies to any country in terms of consoles and games although some cracking teams have blessed us with games for decades now. Add my previous points that to the general anti american feeling outside of the us since 911 and you can see where i'm coming from.
but bootsielon has a point. It would have sold more in japan had it gone multi. Nothing wrong with that statement. No bias even IF he has a preference. mc d's put some funny sauce in their french quatre pounder with cheese (royale) to me it tastes like crap but the french love it. my point is they made a game that was geared towards 360 audience and as feral said they still cater for their home crowd but for some that is not enough.

12.3 - Riiiiiiiiiight, so is this about gaming, or being anti-American?
Listen I don't want to get into politics, but yes I would agree their is a somewhat "anti-American" sentiment, not nearly as great an some would like us to believe, I travel all the time(job related). Everywhere I go(mostly Asia) people are very nice and in conversations it seems people that usually have any negative feelings about the US are related to Iraq, obviously they have objections to the War (which is understandable, no sane person likes war)....but I do get the feeling alot of people just like to "kick you when you're down", if things would have went smoothly and the Iragi people got on their feet quickly, no one would be complaining. Now of course everyone is a "Monday Morning quarterback, and the US who has a history of many many good endeavors of helping many countries in time of conflict and has a long history of providing more aid to countries all over the world than any other single nation, but of course we are the "Evil Americans", systematicly ravaging countries for oil, yet our gas prices are at all time high's, give me a break, sometimes I just laugh at some of the more ridiculous "conspircacy theories" about American intentions. Some people are more critical of the US than those who "intentionally" kill the very same women and children they "claim" they want to protect from the "Evil Occupiers". Why do some "WANT" America to fail?....maybe because of politics or a petty bias, but isn't the well being of Iraq as a nation and its people more important?
I don't pretend that we Americans are Saints, and yes my country has done bad things in the past but we have done far more good deeds and acts for our fellow nations, to be simply labeled as the "bad guys", so easily. OK, anyway excuse my rant, but I've been hearing this subtle jabs of BS about anti-American feelings, and everyone's has a right to their opinion....its just sad that their are so many sideline critic's and not enough people who are willing to "do something" positive.
Now this is about videogames and your comments just don't add up. It's like any other business....Ford for examples DOES SELL cars in Japan, obviously on a very small scale, but the point is the cars they do sale in Japan are made to "appeal" to Japanese tastes, in others words smaller and with accessories that cater to the Japanese market....it would make no sense to try to sell large numbers of big heavy SUV's in Japan, all though from time to time I do see 1 or 2 but those are likely special orders from some with money to burn. The cars they sell in Japan have no effect on their sales in America because Americans could care less what Ford sells in Japan as long as they can still buy a new "Explorer", if they so choose. Now as far as Ford is concerned its just a way of increasing their overall profits....of course in their case they don't make huge profits from Japan, but any sales is a plus to their homebase profits.
