NXE Update Feels More Like A "Nice Touch" than a Full Update

Xbox Evolved writes: "Those of you hoping for a completely different experience or something worth checking out will be pretty disappointed. The best way to sum up the update is what NXE should have been November 2008, along with new and "innovative" ways for Microsoft to take your money. Oh and Avatar Awards. Essentially, besides that it is stuff Microsoft promised a year ago, mainly watching Netflix with friends, and a bit more intuitive experience."

This is very true actually, I would agree with this. However, Microsoft said that the major updates to the 360 would come as seperate applications later this year, which this update sets up ready for them. This comes in the form of Last.fm, Facebook, Twitter and the Zune Video programs. Hopefully this would also include Sky TV for the European audiences.

I'm actually looking forward to the minor features in this update, than the E3 touted features. Seriously don't give a f*** about Facebook, Last.fm and Sky on my Xbox. Twitter may be ok, but I'd rather use my PC or iPhone.

I couldn't care less about Last fm and Facebook however Twitter will be welcomed just because I follow a few game developers.

I'm looking forward to the small touches NXE is getting.

last.fm should be pretty cool too have if I can play it like custom soundtracks for games. Twitter I don't care about since I dont have a twitter account and refuse to make one. Facebook, wonder how that will be.

I agree if you can play Last.fm as custom soundtracks in game that would be pretty sweet. I can't see myself just listing to music with the 360 but if I can listen to it while playing games that would be kick ass.

1.5 - Question
Why is Facebook, Last.fm, Twitter, etc etc a big deal for XBL? Wii and PS3 have both had all those available via web browser. Yes they aren't attached to the main UI, but still, it's there. Not to mention that those features are only available for Gold Members. In all honesty, I'd be hyping things like 1 vs 100 and the 1080p streaming instead of things the competitor has always had for free.

"Why is Facebook, Last.fm, Twitter, etc etc a big deal for XBL? Wii and PS3 have both had all those available via web browser."

Because 360 gamers don't have access to those? Why would 360 only owners care if the PS3 already has them? That is just fanboy garbage like they need to have something "better" to be excited about because the PS3 already has them.

I own both and even I'm excited about them because I know how the PS3 browser is pants and is no way as convenient as having a dedicated application for it.

The experience of an app is superior to a browser (that crashes half the time).

The Wii browser seems to work well and the Wii mote makes using it a breeze though! Wish it was still free.

360 owners trying to justify their system not being able to handle a web browser.

"A dedicated application for Twitter is WAY better than a web browser!"

Keep on spinning.

So, still no option for me to be able to choose to NOT have an avatar? That would, for me and the other oldies who aren't keen(no offense to those that like them at all), be the best thing they could quickly do.

That said I'd also prefer a few more bits to revert to how they used to be-like how it's now pointless to buy a custom theme etc as you can't see much of it. Getting the features is OK though I don't think I ever wanted to use Twitter et al on Wii/PS3 in my life and this won't change it on 360-what I'd like is just a bit more choice(i.e with turning off my avatar) and freedom to have your dash more individual in non avatar related ways!

The reason the 360 doesn't have one is because if you used the PS3 browser you would quickly find how unstable it is. I do not own a Wii and Idle is saying the Wii browser works great so not really sure what the limitations are for that.

I use a web browser on the 360 by using Media Center but it's even worse than the PS3 browser. But if you really want a browser on the 360 this is an option, just don't expect PC surfing.

Still I would have to say meh to what it is now. It is like what they did with Netflix, it was super cool, but had the one crazy feature taken out at the last minute, and this update just now fixes it.

Yeah... although I am no 360 owner (PS3 + PC are enough for me), I see no need for stuff like Twitter on my console. Well, it already is on PS3 via the webbrowser, and I actually do use Twitter every now and then, but I haven't ever used it on anything other than my PC or Pocket PC.

Same goes for Facebook... I simply don't use it at all. Why would I want something like that on a console?

But, alas, there certainly are people who use these things, so... good for them.

Buying clothes for your avatar would be equally pointless to me as buying the stuff for my character in HOME... I simply would NEVER spend cash on something like that... but again... some people might need this, so... good for them too.

Downloadable games is nice (had this on PS3 a long time now, although not many games (Burnout Paradise, Warhawk, GT5P). Still... no need for disc swapping is a nice addition. But you can't sell the games later on, which is bad.

of course it is .... the major update with facebook twitter and live fm are still to come .... but the teaks for inside xbox video streaming, reduced installation sizes, faster nxe and achievement tracking and games on demand service are more than welcomed

I agree, but it doesn't do anything to Inside Xbox, you're not right about that particular thing. Oh and as we all know, Games on Demand is pointless due to the prices being too expensive and the bad DRM the 360 has in place.

well ... like the guys in usa know that the streaming in netflix has increased its speed its the same thing with the inside xbox videos .... i dont have a fairly fast net so for me sometimes the inside xbox videos pause midway to load up the rest of the video and that used to take like 2 mins ... but with the preview build the inside xbox videos stream the whole video without inturrution for upto two complete mins...

games on demand is stil a good feature here... coz here in india not all games are that easily available ... the original copies anyway ... for example : assasins creed costs 2000 rupees on retail (40 $)... but the games on demand feature is offering it on 1500 rupees (30$)... and since the 1000 rupees (20$) platinum hits games are very very rare over here its a good deal... so in places like here its actually a good thing.. coz distribution is very limited

ofcourse in places like austrailia its crap

If you expect something on the level of going from Blades to the NXE every update you are going to be disappointed.

There is a laundry list of new features and fixes and this is just the first part of the update.

7 - i have been
in the preview update since July 23 and have had ample time to play with every thing. Netflix Part is a very fun feature, My son's and I love it, we have had a blast just being on the same console having a netflix party. Netflix no longer stops my viewing if my bandwidth fluctuates, it just changes resolution settings on the fly. The speed of my dashboard also greatly improved, compare it to the difference between a fresh OS install and one that has been running non stop for a month (for me anyway). I also really like being able to sort my friends list by activity so I can group all my Orange Box friends together. I am pleased with the update thus far, and like the fact that one is rolling out in summer and another should be coming in fall.

They really need to step it up a notch, especially with the rumors of a completely new PlayStation Network/firmware 3.0 launching on the 18th.

Step it up? For real? I mean they just did the NXE update not that long ago and that completely changed the interface of the system. No console has done that.. Some rumor of Sony's 3.0 is just that nothing but a rumor.. I don't know why I find it funny for anyone to tell MS to step it's online upgrades up when they have been completely smoking both the PS3 and Wii with new features and functions. What exactly have the last 2 PS3 FW updates done?

10 - Hello
After the debacle with the red rings and the NEWEST debacle with the E74 (Even on the "Jasper" Chipset, like the one I have.) I am uncertain about the future of the 360. Even though the games coming out are great, like Splinter Cell and even Alan Wake...if that ever comes out. How can they compete with what Sony is doing. Better PSN, and superior quality machine, and some would argue better games and interface. Simply put... Microsoft shot themselves in the foot by beating Sony to the punch.

Well, one guy who bought a Jasper 360 got the red ring of death and suddenly it means that the jasper 360 will have a 33 percent failure rate? Is that your line of reasoning, because it seems to me that every Xbox 360 revision that has come out has been more reliable than the last. Of course it's still possible to have a brand new 360 crap out on you, but very improbable at this point.

I could say that Sony shot themselves in the foot when they:

1) Decided to launch the PS3 at such a ridiculously high price.

2) Decided to launch the PS3 with a bare-boned online network.

3) Decided to launch the PS3 with very few games.

4) Have decided not to successfully market most of their games, even their top exclusives.

5) Decided to keep the price of the PS3 ridiculously high even when the economy was at its worst.

6) Decided to make the PS3 architecture overly complicated in an effort to take away developer attention from the 360, which ended up backfiring and allowing the 360 to garner third party favor.

7) Decided to launch a sleek PSP revision with similar hardware specifications to the original PSP, at a ridiculously high price, instead of make a full-blown successor.

8) Decided to make arrogant remarks about how successful the PS3 was going to be and how the price should have been higher.

...Yeah.

Sensitive are we?
All I'm sayin is...
360 = Good System with lotsa problems.
Ps3 = Good System with less problems.
