UK Console Installed Base Tops 24m

The UK's official console sales figures for the last year have just been released by GfK/Chart-Track. They show that in the 12 months to June 2009, the Xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by almost 2:1.

The Wii sold nearly as many as both of them put together, with the DS still the biggest seller of all and the PSP coming in in last place with less than a fifth of the DS' sales.

Not surprising really the UK is practically identical to the US when is comes to console sales.

Gotta feel for the PSP though, less than a fifth of DS sales and Sony is about to raise the price of it with the PSP Go, such great logic.

Not that I know of. 360 versions are usually a few places higher in the charts(sometimes only 1) with only a few exception where the PS3 version is higher.

It worldwide that they tend to balance out a bit, depending on game of course.

Believe it or not, Americans couldn't care less about buying American. I laugh every time I see that being stated. Americans have no brand loyalty; they are the largest consumers in the world. The reason the 360 is the choice for HD consoles is because it came out first.

I wish that were true, but I think its not...In general, PS3 isn't popular here and its very obvious if you live here that the Xbox brand has become very popular in America...I see it only becoming more so. Everyone plays Xbox and Wii here. I know 4 people with PS3's(3 of them also have 360)and PS3 generally doesn't have a good reputation in America. At least here in New York. I think Playstation has become somewhat "uncool" or "not of the Status Quo"....I dunno the right word to use.

People are buying Xbox now because it has a more popular online service and more popular Exclusives...also all the obvious multiplatform titles like GTA, Modern Warfare, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil, etc....can be played on Xbox 360.

Im sony ftw, but own all current consoles/handhelds (DS psp etc)exept 360. Despite the 360 being able to run backups has nothing to do with it, the amount of work involved to hack a 360 is phenomenal compared to that off the wii ps2 etc, flashing a dvd drive etc? Mental compared to a simple sd exploit but i deigest. Few reasons

1. The price, Microsoft have been kind to everyone by consistantly lowering their price in relation to the 'recession' obviously people will buy a cheaper console instad of a premium ps3 where sony has failed in price. luckily i have a 60gb launch unit thank god. but sony really messed up their.

2. Quality, yes we all know about the rrod but microsoft HAVE fd over a few thousand customers but are wrking towards solving the problem with new motherboards at no extra cost.

3. Online gaming, people will nto hack their 360 because it voids their xbox in terms of online. And xbox live is MASSIVE.

4. It came out first so it had more time to establish its new console brand.

5. PS2 was still churning out games this past year, people can not play some ps2 games on the ps3 currently in production (though based on articles on this site that may change who can say) therefore logic says they will stick the ps2 until sony stop suppoting it which has happened due to the 10 year cycle

Living in a Uni household with 3 other guys allowed me to test out the 360 and am impressed with it, i would not mind owning one but am savign the money as im unemployed, another price cut will happen then ill pounce like many others!

Finally, and you can disagree but please leave a reply saying why to this, but the ps3/360 are near enough EQUAL in terms of graphic quality and gameplay with some exceptions, which are what the game was developed on then ported, developers experience with the console, and how they decide to utilize the separate processors. Exclusives will always showcase higher quality because more resources are spent on it than a multi plat title.

This year will be the true test of the ps3 to see if people want it, the games announced for it (exclusive wise) look pretty amazing but who cares, after E3 looking at all the live feeds ffrom the UK i can be sure on 1 thing

It is the best time to be a gamer :)

@ 6.3 mate, i do not own a 360, i own a ps3 launch, ps2 fat. wii, psp 1000, ds and pc. I LOVE my ps3 and treat it with gold to the extent that i dont let anyone touch it but myself. I am a pS3 fanboy but i have the ability to RESPECT other consoles, there is nothing wrong with that. Also this was a comment in reply to the above poster saying that people only bought a 360 to play backups and i got a bit carried away.

@6.5 Who can say? I still stand by that this year will be the TEST of the ps3 not THE year of the ps3.

In fairness, I live in Ireland and the console/industry trends here would fairly closely resemble those of the UK. Here, there is very little talk on the ground about PS3 price drops or the PS3 in general. Most of the people I know have already written it off in favour of the 360. People would go to one another's house, play a little 360 and get hooked. Once they learn of the rather humble price-tag, they're sold. These are the people who don't heed or follow internet buzz about the consoles, they only care about the games they get to play. If they see that they can get Pro Evolution Soccer, Fight Night, UFC, Call of Duty, Gears of War and Halo and play them with all of their friends on-line then they don't care about the PS3. Outside of my few friends who do follow websites like these, nobody I know seems to care about the PS3. And that's rather depressing.

15 - Given the Xbox 360 came out first, what hurts Sony is the economic downturn

Trying to make profits in this economy is tough, Sony will have to cut prices again, if this bad economy continues and take more lost at the expense of market-share. Which is a great expense.

If it doesn't the PS3 will continue to sell but not like the PS2 when it exploded. Sony is on a 10 year plan so, I think they are gonna stay put. Really no need rush.

The problem is that Sony can't afford to cut the price of the current SKU. Hence why it seems logical that they'll return to the market in force with the slim, and all these rumours of production orders for a slim-lined PS3 SKU seem to be filtering out. I think Sony knows the price needs to come down and that this is the perfect opportunity to launch a slim-line PS3 with a modest price-tag, to try and regain the momentum lost during the downturn.

The PS3 is in a pickle pricewise IMO.
When they lower the price,MS and Nintendo will be easily able to lower theirs.
The 10 year plan is valid,but they cant hemmorage but so much marketshare to do it.
The economic downturn is a factor too.People go "bargain shopping" and Sony has not convinced enough people of the "value" of their system.

Even if Sony could lower the price of the PS3 they probably won't because they know MS will lower the price of the 360 in return and Sony will end up selling about the same amount of consoles but making less money than before due to the price cut.

The Wii sells to nongamers, it sells shiatware to people that buy pure donkey shiat.

The 360 and the PS3 are targetted on the same group of gamers, thus the 360 wins.

It has nothing to do with the fact that the 360 is cheaper then the Wii, the people buying the Wii don't care about the price. They care for the fact of having a motion controller they understand. They're too moronic to use a real controller.

Never in history has a console failed so badly as the PS3, and Sony is finally paying for its decade of destruction and sins on the gaming industry.

A good consumer can always smell the stench of death around the console, and the PS3's smell is strong. Millions of consumers have abandoned the PlayStation brand because they realize the Xbox 360 is a far superior product at a significantly lower pricepoint. This is why consumers love the Xbox 360 and have rewarded it with record sales, attach rates and consumer satisfaction ratings are at an all time high.

The PS3 has become the symbol for Sony's broken dreams and arrogance, and they have finally been punished for it. Sony fooled the marketplace twice with the PS1 and the PS2, but consumers are well informed and smart, and they realized that they would not be fooled a third time.

Sony with their incredible arrogance believe that the PS3 would outsell the Xbox 360, a machine which consistently outperforms its rival in every single Eurogamer comparison. They lied to consumers and told them it was a supercomputer and that it would bring 1080p graphics at 120fps in 4D. All these promises were nothing but lies, and the PS3 is now a machine whose inferior architecture and design is loathed by the industry and consumers alike as unwieldy, backwards and inferior to the Xbox 360.

In comparison to the PS3 which has 3rd party developers abandoning it like rats off a sinking ship, the Xbox 360 has been an incredible and unrivalled success, with every single developer on the planet swearing allegiance to the Xbox 360 and praising the Xbox 360's superior architecture, award winning features and AAA titles. The Xbox 360 is the future of home entertainment, and has driven innovation and quality to new heights that only Sony could dream of. With the Xbox 360 defeating the PS3 in sales worldwide, with significant growth in all territories, the inferior PS3 has only seen massive declines in its sales.

The Xbox 360 has always been about the games, and we have been rewarded with the greatest lineup in home entertainment history on the Xbox 360. The greatest, latest and highest quality titles look and play best on the Xbox 360, and this is a fact that has been proven in over 12 Eurogamer comparisons.

Do you know that the PS3 has been out for less than 3 years, and it's already outsold the GameCube, and at more than twice the price? And the GameCube wasn't even close to the biggest failure in console history. Therefore, it is objectively impossible for the PS3 to be considered the worst failure in history.

What's your point? The 3DO only sold 2 million before being shut out completely. The CD-i barely budged half a million. The Jaguar didn't even manage a quater of a million. The GameCube sold more than twice as many as the Dreamcast, Saturn and TurboGrafx-16. The Atari 2600, considered the most successful console in history up until the time of the NES, barely sold more in its lifetime than the GameCube sold in its. The GameCube was only barely beaten by the Xbox.

The GameCube is only the worst failure in history if your concept of history is less than a decade. Worst failure of last generation, sure, but only barely, as the Xbox could be considered an equal failure when put up against the PS2's success. Go back to prior generations and the GameCube is looking darn good.

I think I've made my point: it is totally, completely, factually wrong to suggest that the PS3 is the worst failure in console history. It's simply not.

And to those suggesting that Sony should get out of the hardware business as a result of the PS3's sales, well, let me put it into perspective. This generation is still fairly new, there's a lot of time left (all three console makers this generation have expressed that they will support their machines for many years, and that the next generation is not nearly upon us), and the PS3 still has a lot of time to live and have price drops and release compelling software so that more people will become interested in buying it. It's already performed better than Nintendo did last generation, and if Nintendo had taken its "failure" of last generation and dropped out of the hardware business, they wouldn't have had the opportunity to be at the head of the pack again with the Wii. Dropping out of the hardware business is just not a rational suggestion to Sony based on the facts. The PS3 is doing well, the PSone and PS2 are the most successful consoles of all time so far, and Nintendo has proven that you can go from a slump to first place from one generation to the next.

Honestly there has been an overload of good news and literally tons of gaming news since E3 for the Xbox 360. PS3 seems to be the console with nothing but poor news for it. If I do recall correctly, last week Activision said they will dump the PS3 if Sony doesn't drop the price soon.

no surprise there,with the 360 arcade being the biggest seller of all the 360 systems.with it being given away at 99 to 119 retail in the uk its a no brainer for parents buying a system even the pro is 169.we all know the ps3 is the best console out there from what it can do, but 110 to 170 the difference in cost is all the consumer will see,thats hard to sell to a casual.theres alot more things for sony could do but it would need help.first a price cut and slim edtion which would break even at retail,second bluray aaa exclusives timed film releases to get point at dvd might be a none considered future purchase,from a developers point of veiw more multi discs changing games like ffx111,this shows of the biggest down fall of all the competiton by a mile.
