Mark Rein: Annex Issues 'Blown Out Of Proportion'

Mark Rein has today responded to the Gears Of War dlc content issues (over at gearsforums), and seems to think that the arguments have all been 'blown out of proportion'.

Ha, I read the first couple and last couple of paragraphs of Mark Rein's forum response, obviously missing out the juicy stuff, my bad!

Looks like they're going for the Halo 2 approach, that's cool with me, me and my cousin waited several months for the new Halo maps when they were first released and we can do the same thing again, although there will be that temptation if everybody else DOES buy it ...

Those who refuse to pay for the additional content will be isolated due to the amount of servers playing with the new maps.

Same thing happened with GRAW1.

This is BS.

We want them free. I hope they sales are poor for this content.

3.1 - Get a grip!

I have no problem with the maps costing extra as lets face it, it is extra content which I doubt was free to produce. Bug fixes, patches are still free as I would expect. If you think you're going to get isolated then buy the maps - its as simple as that.

Sick of whiny kids always wanting something for nothing and if they don't get it for nothing then they feel disadvantaged.

4.1 - Wow - for an unfinished game its done remarkably well!!!

You make it sound as though GOW was rushed or had only been in development for several months. GOW was finished when it was released and now the developers are building on its success by releasing additional content. So, they want to make a little extra money by releasing more content so what, this is business not 'lets keep the whiny kids happy with another free giveaway'. Consider this, do you think GOW would have been any less successful without the two extra (free) maps that have been released so far? I doubt if this game was "half finished" as you claim that it would have been half as successful - critically or commercially.

Next time you're sitting there looking at your half empty glass of soda, why not look at it from the point of view that its still half full!!!

Yeah, bugs, fixes, patches etc. are free. The maps will be free after several months. If you listen to the podcast he was saying that they (Epic) just had a difference in opinion with M$'s business model where dev's charge for extra content, so they compromised and their be a charge initially but if you wait you can get them free, so this will have less of an impact on the other developers, because like it or not it costs dev's to create more content and they all can't do it for "free" like Epic.

9 - If it's reasonable, that's fine

I gotta say, people always yell that we aren't getting stuff for free... I hate expecting something for free because the majority of products in the world aren't free. But if it's reasonable, why complain? $5 for a couple maps or content that will extend your play, that's a bargain. I can dig up $5 easily. Cuz really, yea they're looking at it through a developer point because it is hard to make new maps and not get any profit off of it. Charging $2.50 for a map, 1/4 maybe 1/3 of the owners purchase it, that's pretty good for the company.

I don't mind them charging as long as it's something that will extend my experience, if it's something they need to fix up in the game already... without doubt it should be free.

its their job! yes GOW did well but these guys have been in the office AFTER GoW since early November. 6 months....now something needs to bring in the money the studio gives as a salary....they earm a living!

Personally i dont feel its that bad....a bit disappointing maybe, but know need to get your knickers in a twist ;)

Its the Bungie approach and even the latest maps are being charged for. why? cos they take weeks to produce and hours of people labour.

The 1st couple were free werent they? And it's not like you're having to pay for content that already exists on the disk. You're paying for extra content that will extand the longetivity of a game you already enjoy. I dont see the problem with this myself... everyone has rent to pay!

14 - The first couple were free because Discovery Channel sponsored them.

So someone payed. Personally, I think the Halo 2 model and the way these maps are going to be handled is the way to go. Win, win for everyone including the corporations and the gamers. You charge initially and then they're free a couple months later. There are many, many consumers who can't wait and will pay the money up front, therefore earning a profit for MS and Epic. For those that have more willpower (or less money) and refuse to pay, they will have the same access to the same content for free. They'll just have to wait. So basically, you pay not to stand in line. This is worth the money for many and no one gets left out in the cold. Plus, the companies make their nut. I think all gaming DLC content should be handled this way (except updates and demos which should always be free). It creates two post-release buzzes for the game as well. One when the new content is released and one when it becomes free. It's also nice to see Epic and MS kissed and made up, if there was ever any bad blood to begin with, as this could have been all media (ahem....1up, king of gaming tabloids) created. This is good news for future 360/Gears relations.
