Crackdown As You've Never Seen It Before

Digital Foundry writes:

"In the first of our technical retrospectives, Digital Foundry takes a look at Crackdown on Xbox 360. Two years on from its release, it remains an intriguing game: still state-of-the-art in some respects, but superseded by competitors in several others. It's also fair to say that from a gameplay perspective, it remains one of the single most wonderful games you can play on Xbox 360. A brand new copy can be bought for a pittance now, so if you're a newcomer to the Microsoft console, it's a must-buy."

It looks like an interesting game, but the only logical reason to have an article about a two year old game is because inFAMOUS just came out.

unless they happen to have an NDA on something a little more... new in the crackdown universe.

Yeah, the best thing about Crackdown was it was so underhyped from the Halo 3 beta, that no one didn't really have huge expectations for it. But it turned out to be a really good game, gotta give it its props.

campaign was pretty weak but just climbing around after you ahve your character built is amazing

especially after the first dlc, the harpoon gun was the most fun i've had in a sandbox game

pinning people to cars as they drive buy was sadistically satisfying

4.1 - Undeniably pleasing sir, it was.
Then driving around whilst having five to ten people pinned to your car and hitting corners and running a leg, arm or even a head sometimes was tons of fun.

5 - What a shame this great article will be buried by flamebait. Just look at the hottest 360 stories!
I love me some Crackdown and it is a very underrated game imo.

Not just the climbing and jumping but the vehicles as well.

The DLC is also top notch.

This game needs a true sequel but like most MS exclusives the dev's they have doing them are off on other projects and the IP just hangs in limbo. One of MS's big failings this generation.

"The night-time view of the cityscape at the end of the video exercises the full might of Crackdown's deferred rendering engine (similar techniques are found in GTAIV and Killzone 2, to name but two). In this scene, the engine is processing over 3,000 light sources. All the lights in the city, the lights from the traffic - each and every one of them has a dynamic, real-time effect on the surrounding environments. Another interesting thing to note is that if the light source itself moves off-screen, its effects still remain in the scene. Compare with Killzone 2 - should the light source move out of view, the entire effect disappears too. A similar effect is seen in the CryEngine 3 trailer released at GDC. "

Very true. The cell shading turned some people off to the game, but there really is some beautiful lighting and effects. I really hope they make a Crackdown 2.

For not owning an XBOX360, Crackdown is easily one of my favorite games of this generation. I spent almost 9 months on the QA Team for Crackdown at Microsoft Game Studios, and it was easily the best contract that I've ever had the pleasure of working. Despite being overshadowed, Crackdown is a high quality title that any gamer should take a crack at, even if just to say that they did.

Search Ebay, check Craiglist, and scour your local game store's bargain bin. If you haven't had the pleasure of playing Crackdown (and with a friend!) then you're missing out.

10 - my only real complaint.
the lack of variety in the missions.

With the back story, city, and technology the universe of crackdown had spawned, I see no reason why they couldn't have come up with a bit more interesting boss fights.

One of the things I really would've licked to see is a mission where the shai-gen have a parade and you have to take your truck and just smash through them or something.

Maybe the inclusion of tanks, or some sort of mech. Have the volk launch missles at you and you have to dodge them or something.

11 - This is STILL a great game.
Man, one of the finest games ever made, IMO.
Between this, and inFamous (which I'll pick up tomorrow, after having played the amazing demo), I have literally no need for another free-roamer.
These 2 are WAY more fun than GTA4, which ramped up the realism, but forgot about the fun.
Cheers.

We finally post in the same thread!
Did you see the explosions video?
I really hope they do make a sequel, though we'll probably have to settle with that APB game.

12.1 - what do you mean "settle with"?
I absolutely loved Crackdown, but APB is going to be great game also. If they can pull off what they are setting out to, it is going to be an awesome game also. If MS is smart, they will release a Crackdown too also.

13 - I am playing it right now
It's getting more and more satisfying as I unlock higher jumps, or get better weapons (I don't have the rocket launcher, yet. But I have a nice grenade launcher).

Yes, the graphics are a little bit dated, and sometimes I randomly die. But those minor things can be looked over, as the game is fun, and the city is very much alive.

I'm going to be honest and i know i'm one of the few people that think this, but when i tried crackdown a week or so ago, while waiting for inFamous after loads of recommendations - i hated it.

The gun play was stiff, the movement was stiff, the car control was stiff.

It is probably a good game, but i couldn't get past the gameplay - and because i had other games to play, i just left it.

14.1 - I won't disagree because it is your opinion,
but it sounds like you didn't give it a fair shot. If you get back to it, spend some time leveling up and getting new abilities. The game is a hell of a lot more fun when you level up. It is a little boring at first, but once you get more abilities it gets a lot better. The best way to appreciate this game for you, would probably be to download the demo from XBOX Live, and go through that. The reason I say this is, the leveling up is accelerated and you can get to three or four stars very fast and see how much fun it is.

14.2 - well.
the game is like an action RPG, as you kill things, travel, drive, you uprgrade your skills and abilities making it a lot more fun in the long run.
