1 - Yes...
...it has been negative , but i already preordered mine so i dont fit that demographic. If you think about it , sooner or later , my harddrive is going to get to the point where its so full of xbla games and what have you that it will cause problems ... after all how many of you have had a pc work fine until you start nearing the last quarter of life of your hdd , and it starts acting up on you?
My point is , i for one , was going to buy a 120gb hdd anyway down the line , so if i was going to buy it anyway , why not just spend an extra 20-40 bucks and get an elite which not only comes with extra space on the hard drive (5x) , but also with hdmi support which causes zero interference , iptv already pre installed and its a nice black finish that combines with every piece of electronics i own. I will sell my premium for 300 dollars meaning that this investment will cost me the same $200 that upgrading to an individual 120hdd wouldve cost me.
Would i have prefered it came with that talked about 65nm chip , YES, but being able to give myself the piece of mind now by transferring my 2 year extended warranty (which has saved my ass twice now) is priceless.

1.1 - lol so you bought to 360's?
And people said the Ps3 was expensive.
The Elite is what Microsoft should have started off with and everyone knows it.
This wont be the last time they do this. Expect a new model next year.

I suspect most of the negativity is coming from current 360 owners, especially those who bought systems since Christmas and were under the impression that the Pro edition was the best there was for 360 gaming.
Truthfully, I don't think this hurts MS in the long term, but some negative press/opinion may be forthcoming and may hurt them short-term. Personally, I'm rooting for my system to crap out after April 29th (Best Buy replacement plan) and I'll just pay the difference.

2.1 - Your right
People want the Elite and already have the Premium are a little p!ssed. But many have lined up to buy (weird) I just need the adapter and Harddrive the rest I don’t care about. IMO I think Microsoft is targeting potential new owners more than the current owners. What gets me is, it’s the fans that asked for this and Microsoft gave it to them and now they complain. Some on the Xbox forums say things like they should have had this out at launch, as if Microsoft or any maker of home electronics can just pump these things out in a week for there impatient spoiled A$$es.

"Overall sentiment for the Elite is negative, and is currently below the positive sentiment garnered by the Wii and the Playstation 3."
What planet has this guy been on? Since when has the PS3 generated "positive sentiment"?... Since it's had a few good articles written due to breaking a few sales records?
It's some impressive records to be sure, but it's not spectacular like many people seem to think it is. I guarantee that if Nintendo stocked up 1 million Wii units (even this long after it's launch), then released them all in the same day, that they'd blast those PS3 numbers out of the water.
As for the Xbox360 "negative sentiment"... ya, no crap. I'm not going to sit here and write how great it is that MS is releasing this (and yes, it is great). That's just going to rub it in the face of anyone who already has a 360 and might now want an Elite... and that's just not a cool thing to do.
I didn't buy a 360 yet, because I was planning on buying a PS3... but I'm just not impressed with Sony this time 'round (especially if they think HOME is going to be their big savior)... so now I'll buy the 360 Elite. But I'm not going sit here and say how awesome it is, and that MS is great for releasing it... because quite frankly, other 360 owners don't need to hear it. They all have a great system that's amazing for it's intended purpose (playing games).
I wouldn't have the best things to say either (if I already had purchased a 360)... and fact is that pretty much anyone who posts into forums already has a 360... so naturally there's going to be more negative comments.
It's an overall good strategy for Microsoft, and I imagine it will steal away many potential sales of PS3s to boot. Just sucks to be Sony right now. They've lost me, and seems many many others too. Good luck to them though. They'll certainly need it.

i have only bought one system....the others i didnt pay for , ms did. and now that im upgrading to an elite , i still will sell my premium so technically i will own only one. and have bought only one. i dont think you are reffering to me , but i just had to point this out anyways.
and to add to that , i just wanted to point out that if you have bought a 360 , you are far from being a moron , you are an intelligent consumer.

I personally at first had no interest but a friend of mine called and he is the standard casual gamer, he already owns a 360 and he said to me
" Did you see the 360 Elite? Holy crap thats hot.. looks like i can get around 300 on ebay with a game or so, im going to get the elite as soon as its out"
It surprised me.. so maybe the black thing alone does it for a certain type of gamer.

11 - truebego sorry to do this to you bro but.
Yeah Microsoft screwed up so bad there profiting from it, I guess all those millions of dollars made on the 360 and its games must be a real horrible mistake. Man all those poor developers that are going to be out of a job for making such profitable games on the 360. What are the 360 owners going to do now with all these top quality games coming out? My oh my ,Why do the devs keep making all these great games for a console know one wants?
Man you guys just refuse to face reality anymore, television has rotted your brains.

I'm one of those current buyers who aren't pleased about the "Elite's" release. Oh well, what can you do? I don't plan on buying it because financially speaking I don't think it's a good buy. I can upgrade my PS3 harddrive for far cheaper. I know that 120gb won't be enough soon and MS will jut try to get another $200 beans for 240gb hard drive. I'm good and a couple of my buddies who have a 360 don't plan on upgrading but if they did that's their decision.
If you haven't already bought a 360 then it's a better deal than the Premium and I'm sure that it will be phased out pretty soon because it doesn't make economic sense out of the 3 "choices".
The Elite may even have pushed people to buy a PS3. We'll never know. I know the explanation for the HDMI and the larger hard drive but why the color black? It has two systems already out that are eggshell. Oh, well.
Anyone know if the HDMI for the Elite is 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3? Thanks.

13 - I did a lot searching on the HDMI versions
and it was reported to be HDMI 1.2. Thus eliminating the idea in my mind to buy the Elite. No 65nm processor, no HDMI 1.3, no sale. Though, I don't need True Dolby HD yet as my current AVR doesn't support it. I'll keep my cores and play the games like everyone can, no matter version you have.
Still can't find the original source, but here's the report and link below:
Xbox 360 Elite supports HDMI 1.2 profile. For audio, you can select DD, DTS (at 1.5 Mbps), and WMA-Pro (Microsoft high fidelity multi-channel codec supported in some AVRs such as Pioneer). Since it is not based on 1.3, it will not support output of DD+ or TrueHD (even if it did, mixing would have been turned off).
PCM output is available but only for 2-channels (not 5.1). Please, please, don’t say you don’t like this. There is nothing you are going to say which we don’t know . Our goal was to provide a digital connection for video which people wanted for some of their TVs. And of course, single cable A/V connection. So if having analog video bothered you before, you can now use digital. If you lacked component/VGA on your TV, you are in business with Xbox 360 Elite.
Keep in mind that the spring software update for HD DVD substantially improves audio fidelity. Per above, you now have a choice of no less than three output formats.
If you are keen on having 5.1 PCM output, I recommend purchasing the Toshiba A2 player which after the price drop, will be much cheaper than Elite.
Answering other questions, both Xbox 360 Elite and current Xbox 360 units will have a spring (console) update which adds support for different video levels for VGA output (“7.5 IRE vs 0”). And as someone mentioned, using this setting you should be able to use computer monitors in addition to TVs with resolutions all the way up to 1080p with high fidelity and no issues with HDCP handshaking. So for current users, I highly recommend trying this update with your VGA connection to see if it does the job for you. Note that this is a console update and will work for both games and of course, HD DVD. The HD DVD software update is separate from this (and will be available on both Xbox Live and xbox.com).
On output video format, Xbox 360 Elite will perform a handshake and select the appropriate RGB/YUV settings over HDMI. You cannot select it yourself.
The spring HD DVD software update will fix all the lip sync issues that have been reported/we know of.
There is no support for the WMV-HD disc format but of course, you can put WMV files on discs and Xbox 360 will play them.

@12 It should be current standard (1.3)
I'm getting one because my HD is full, and I have a very sexy TV that I'd like to get that little bit extra out of.
The color is cool, but that's a minor thing, as faceplates and controller case mods can make whatever color you want anyway. Selling my 360 Premium for $275 to my buddy.

16 - If Microsoft would have been smarter...
...they would have used their strong point to cure the HDD space problem and attacked it through software. It would have been very easy for them to create an update for windows and Xbox Live to give users the ability to backup their stuff right to a network connected PC. If windows has the ability to stream music/video to the Xbox360 then they should have the ability to run the stream in the other direction and allow for backups to PC. Then with the limitless amount of (cheaper) PC harddrive space there would be no issue. That is something Sony wouldn't be able to copy...at least not until they designed their own OS for PCs. As far as the HDMI...it should have been either a cable or adapter box for those who absolutely needed it.
I think the real reason this system exists is primarily the IPTV functionality. This version of the box will be offered as a set top solution for streaming TV.

23 - I just don't understand why people are getting so crazy over this.
I expect it from the fanboys, as they'll make a big deal over anything or nothing because, for some strange reason, gaming has turned into various cults. However, I just don't understand the rest of it. All three SKUs have the same GPU, same CPUs, same services, same game line-up, same online play, same controller, same everything. The only difference is the HDMI output as the HDD can be upgraded on any of the SKUs (although currently the 120 gig is way overpriced).
The visual difference between HDMI and component/vga is almost negligible and the audio difference will only be noticed by those that have a really sweet (and expensive) audio set up. Even still, the audio difference isn't earth shattering. It has already been stated that the copywrite for HDMI won't go into affect until 2011 or 2012, assuming it actually does.
So I just can't see how anyone is getting screwed. This 'Elite' version was obviously intended to support MS's IPTV venture as well as the recent acquiring of NETFLIX's CEO. For those that are excited about these 360 services, then the Elite is warranted. For those that just want to game, there is no reason to buy the Elite.
There are those, especially the fanboys, that are acting as if the other SKUs are now obsolete. This is ridiculus. GAMING, the main purpose of a GAME CONSOLE, is still exactly the same no matter which SKU you buy. Games are NOT better on the Elite than the Premium or Core. Neither is watching movies, TV, etc. The HDMI benefit (which is the ONLY thing the Elite offers that can't be done on the other SKUs) is really pretty miniscule. The piracy protection is also a non-issue as it will most likely not go into affect during this generation of consoles.
For the extreme A/V technophiles and the IPTV supporters, the Elite is for them and is only $80 more than the Premium. Other than this, what's the big deal? For me, the only issue is getting MS to drop the price of that 120 gig HDD or expanding the functionality of the existing data transfer cables (ie. quit being so anal about piracy) so PC HDDs can be more utilized.

24 - Damn BMW they are just like MS
I have this sweet M3 with an inline 6 making 333hp and now BMW tells me that next year they are going with a 400hp V8. So I just went down to my dealer and said "Hey I want the upgrade to a V-8 and trade in my car for what i paid because when I bought my M3 it only had a inline 6, what are you trying to pull!" Sounds stupid huh. Well that is what it sounds like when you complain about the new Elite 360. It's progress. Get over it. Do you have an I pod? Or a new car that has changed since last year, even though you thought it would stay the same. Well it's the same thing with the xbox 360 they are makeing a sweeter version. Yeah it goes down the road the same, has the same shape, and is just as fast, you are just getting a few more options now. So enjoy!
