Epic just need to work on a new engine because that unreal 3 is already looking outdated

this engine is not bad ... but it needs to stay away from high profile games and exclusives (especially 360)... but games like mirrors edge show what it can really do ... a lot of untapped potential ... the fault is usually with the developers going for the same grey brown look... personally i'm looking more forward to the cry engine 3...

Edit: gears 2 and mirrors edge really showcase this engine well from completely opposite spectrums

They're all ready out classed by Cry Engine and apparently it's for this gen's consoles.

We haven't seen the CryEngine on a console yet.

Not saying UE3 is the standard to go after, but lately we seen some different games based off of it. Not just Mirror's Edge, but Last Remnant or X-Men Wolferine. So, its doable. I'm curious what they have to show at E3 to maybe match to the latest high end engines. UE3 is obviously patch happy to push its own limits (patch like literally). Not necessarily a bad thing.

OUTDATED! You guys do realize when this engine came out don't ya? People are saying well the cry engine looks better than this well duh, for one there isn't even a game that uses the new cry engine. And once the new U4 engine come out it will smoke the old outdated cry engine, see how this works? Back and forth exactly how it should be.

Last years new features gave Geow2 some nice new features, that Geow1 didnt have.
Hopefully the engine will feature some awesome new stuff.

I can't see it being awesome if its just the same engine with a few upgrades. These upgrades wern't even noticeable in GeoW2 when compared to GeoW1. I hope I am proven wrong and these upgrades truely do make a substantial difference but I can't see it.

ya, that will actually do something worthwhile in the actual games we play.

I am sorry, but they showed all that update stuff last year that we were expecting to see in gears 2. Hardly any of it actually played any part in the final game and the few bits we did see were nothing more then eye candy.

I thought they already outlined the update months ago? They demonstrated real-time, global radiosity lighting and a bunch of developer tools.

The only developer tools we are gonna see coming from Epic are Cliff Blezinski and his crew. LOL. They are totally overrated. I can't believe a bought into the hype. I really am ashamed of myself.

Far from overrated, the tools they displayed are extremely intuitive and will be an invaluable resource for developers. In terms of an off-the-shelf game engine, they are the cream of the crop. It's not simply a co-incidence that it's the most popular choice for so many development studios.

Just kidding, you people remember that this E3 is supposed to be like it was right? It should be fun if the team at epic puts on a show for thier fans even if they are showing the same thing they showed last year.

they won't be showing the stuff they showed last year because they have already shown stuff this year that eclipses last years tech such as global illumination

The amazing thing is IMO that Killzone 2 stripped the crown from the Unreal tech demo, and tech demos show more raw power than what the engine can actually provide in a game setting because they don't have to worry about AI and various other elements that take away power from the GPU and CPU.

So I mean Epic better have the engine looking better than the Killzone 2 game because tech demos are always more pimped than what they can actually produce in a game. Gears 2 wasn't as impressive as KZ2 in most areas, so they have a LOT to prove with the next game that's using this latest build. I'm not going to be floored by any tech demo after seeing how Epics tech demo played out in Gears 2. Show me a game fully built around it with everything in place, and then I'll judge if it's comparable to Killzone 2.

UE3 and the Killzone engine are completely different things.

Why bring up the Killzone engine when it's not available for third parties. They don't even compete.

UE3 is about flexibility and cross platform performance. It's about having the tools and support in place so you don't have to bother with an engine team.

The Killzone engine does Killzone 2 very nicely, and that's it. Hopefully, with CryEngine 3 and Rage though, we'll see some real competition in the middleware space.

Great points.

The Unreal Engine lets developers get great graphics at low cost. I'm currently enjoying Wolverine which is a great UE3 game. Sure, it doesn't look that great but I'm sure it would look much worse if the developers went for a proprietary engine with the same budget. Most importantly, it's great fun to play.

Not everyone can get 50 mill+ dollars thrown at them to make a engine and a game. It is so much more cost efficient to get the U3 engine and make your game. And let's not forget when the U3 engine came out shall we, actually the engine has held up pretty well......what is normally said o yeah i remember "YOU JUST GOT KILLZOWNED"

13 - I don't understand the hate
Why hate on the UE? It has done tons of good for startup companies. Great games have come out and bad games as well, but without the engine some of those companies would not be able to get their dream to come to fruition.

You guys are not developers and the time to create an engine for a game is immense. Why reinvent the wheel when UE can do it for you already?

I think UE works fine and on the right hands it's a ridiculously good tool. In the end is up to the artist to make it work for them.

I'm personally not impressed with killzone, I liked MGS4 better. Call me crazy, but everytime I play killzone and then Gears2 I get this feeling of WTF am I doing in KZ. But the thing about Gears2 I like is how the character moves and feels vs killzone. Not so much the graphics and smokes or dust particles.

It's all about Rapid Application Development and UE provides that.

Rapid development usually mean rushed, half assed games. Me I would rather they take their time and do it right.

We have enough subpar multiplatform games coming out. We need more genre and this gen defining games, and those take time. I only have but so much money to buy games and it's reserved

I respect that you didn't like Killzone 2 but remember for everyone who disliked the game there are others who love it, and the same can be said about all games, GEOW and Halo and MGS4 included.

Well I would look at it this way. If my development team can make a game in half a year with UE or a whole year by creating my own unproven engine as a business which one would I pick.

Now if I have the budget and time then I can create a good game the the UE. My goal is to create the best game I can with the resources I have. If using UE allows me to get the project done faster, then I can use the extra resource and time to make it better.

That is why even though companies might rush a product out because of Rapid Application development it's a fallacy to assume that all companies using it do that.

I agree about your comment in regards to Killzone. I was just pointing out an opinion about a game that is not using a licensed engine. Maybe not the best example.
