Why Infinite Undiscovery Remains Undiscovered

Now is not a good time to be a developer of Japanese role-playing games. JRPGs face an increasingly bewildering double standard: If a game sticks too closely to the norms established by series like Final Fantasy, it's labeled as derivative and uninspired. However, if a game ventures outside those boundaries, then it's criticized for straying too far from what games like Final Fantasy have conditioned us to expect from "good" RPGs. So, even if you're a reasonably established Japanese developer trying to create an original IP in the current console generation, you just can't win. Case in point: Infinite Undiscovery.

Good RPG On the Wrong console, different kind of gamers on the Xbox 360. Most on the Xbox 360 prefer Western type RPG'S over Japanese ones, especially Xbox 360 gamers anywhere outside of Japan.

I hated it. I really hated it. I got all the way on to disk 2 and just hated how "cheap" it felt.
The first warning flag was the pointless "lets turn out ALL the lights and force you to fight your way through completely dark areas". That was just poor game design and the lights that followed you were nearly useless.
Then the endless backtracking. I swear, that desert bit was just tedius. Hey, lets run all the way from one side of this big, baron desert to the other. Oh what's this? People? Well lets escort them back!
Nearly there now and oh wait, someone's got lost. Time to backtrack AGAIN to find them....
Yey we found them, now we can get the people to where they need to be. Now that this is done, we can finally get on with our quest....on the other side of the big baron desert...

Oh I agree with that there Kushan. I ended up going through the dark bits without using the lights and the desert was annoying, mainly because it's suddenyl overpopulated with monsters and you have those twins with you(who are useless).

I have Demon's Souls and it's my first venture into bothering to import a game. The result? Best JRPG on PS3 for sure. It's unique, challenging, and filled with tons of quality in every nook and cranny.

Its story is told in a bit sprace way and the game like everyone has said is very difficult if you aren't used to having to evade and block often to life. That's about all you could say is "bad", about this game which is well nothing to me.

Lost Odyssey was also a great JRPG this console generation. As was Valkyria Chronicles. The rest have had hit and miss features, but nothing I'd recommend for anyone to run out and play.

All 3 of these you could try and play now if you have the hardware, but the big issue is none of these 3 enter my top 10 of best RPGs let alone best games of all time. They are 100% worth your time and cash this console generation, but don't expect them to make you feel like you did after the completion of your favorite Final Fantasy, Chrono, Lunar, Grandia, Legend of Dragoon, etc etc etc. The games for JRPGs this generation so far aren't of that caliber, but at least these 3 games are hella close and hopefully real soon we'll see a same level of quality and the eventual surpassing of last gen.

5 - Is this really a mystery?
A JRPG on a console who's predecessor was built on FPS and online games. Of course most 360 owners wouldn't want to buy it, let alone care about it. Look at all the games that sold well on the 360 - Halo 3, Halo Wars, Gears of War, Gears of War 2.....Awesome games, but none are JRPG games. The PS3 is more of an RPG console. It has barely any RPG games, but the ones out for it sold pretty well. Recently, Valkyris Chronicles sales went through the roof thanks to Gamestop's sale, lol. White Knight Chronicles is the best selling and rated JRPG out now.

Now, I'm not saying the JRPG games on the 360 suck, because I personally love some of them, but the audience these developers are trying to target just aren't interested.

@ps3d0

Apparently you can't read either. Kamikaze didn't say that the 360 was primarily a shooter console--but that the original xbox was.

The flow of logic is that the people who had an Xbox and migrated over to the 360 were interested in what the original did best--shooters. THAT is why JRPGs don't sell and the Halos' and Gears of Wars and CODs dominate the console's play time.

Sure, the 360 has done a better job of diversifying itself in terms of games, but the fact remains (despite the disagrees) that a certain type of games sell better on the console than others.
Likewise, it is a fact that the RPGs, despite the abundance of titles, have sold better on the PS3 simply because the Playstation brand is so closely associated with that particular genre.

Even though I am a frequent of N4G and own every console, the xbox 360 still in my mind remains the "shooter system." It's a stigma that I don't think it will ever shake off regardless of what games it has to offer. Whether or not that is a good or bad thing, I don't know. All I can say is that they do good job of promoting the hardcore games and they have given themselves a strong image in that respect.

Quite a cliché.... JRPGs generally don't sell that bad on 360, even infinitre Undiscovery sold almost half a million copies... that's actually more than Valkyria Chronicles. They didn't all sell well (Eternal Sonata, Vesperia...), but Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey and last Remnant also sold reasonably well, so it's not like the 360 audience can't appreciate JRPGs.

IMO the main problem with JRPGs this gen is not that they are on 360, since they don't really sell better on PS3 (except in japan, obviously...); it's that WRPGs are on average better, and therefore sell better. Oblivion, Fallout 3, mass effect, and fable 2 all reached the 2 million mark on 360, not so bad .

7 - Wow coincidence!
I just picked this game up online for cheap, I've loved Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata in th past and Blue Dragon was pretty good.

Get past the first 2-3hours, and WOW. It's damn addictive! I'm 11 hours into it, and loving every second.

It's one of those unusual gems though - play it for a few minutes and you'll be able to point out a dozen flaws, but somehow it just doesn't matter. I guess it's the case where the result is more than the sum of its parts.

I'd highly recommend this to any JRPG fan - I was very surprised, and despite not having finished it yet I want to go through it again already. Can be found uber-cheap online. One of the few JRPGs where fighting isn't a chore, it's fun.

I find it very hard to believe that IUD could be worse than TLR. The Last Remnant is abysmal. It's easily on the Top5 list of worst RPGs of this generation.

This review does pique my interest in picking up Infinite Undiscovery and giving it a go. However, I'm a little worried that the author may be overly praising the game in an attempt to justify his purchases. Case in point, "I wanted to give Infinite Undiscovery a shot. It was one of the reasons I wanted a 360, actually." Ya know, like maybe he heard about an upcoming JRPG called Infinite Undiscovery, purchased a 360 to play it, and is just now declaring that the game is just a pinch more awesome than it actually is in order to justify the purchase to himself.

I may be wrong. The review just gave me that vibe.

PS3
Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice - 0.21 million
Valkyria Chronicles - 0.40 million

360
The Last Remnant - 0.55 million
Infinite Undiscovery - 0.45 million

You were saying? Even the crappiest of 360 JRPGs outsell the cream of the crop on the PS3. Also take into account that the 360 only has 1/3 of the PS3's installbase in Japan. And the fact that they had to re-release Valkyria Chronicles because it had such extremely poor sales.

"Less than a year after Valkyria Chronicles was released in Japan it's joining Sony's PlayStation 3 The Best collection. The yellow striped re-release goes for 3,990 yen ($43) which means its half off. Valkyria Chronicles originally went on sale for 7,980 yen ($88) when it came out last April."

Nope. I'm just replying to Becko who tries to make it sound like PS3 JRPGs are doing better than 360 JRPGs. When in fact none of the JRPGs this gen have been that succesful. WRPGs like Oblivion, Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and Fable have had much more commercial success.

10.6 - Soda, you are being quite selective with your list.
What about White knight Chronicles?

It curb stomped every JRPG released so far and has only been sold in ONE TERRITORY. It's also published by Sony and developed by Level 5, who basically loathe MS so you won't be seeing it on a 360 anytime soon.

And you seem to have conveniently forgotten about Demon's Souls. An interesting little underdog that - despite massive underestimation/ under shipment of demand- over charted Star Ocean 4 in Japan (check the Media Create software sales, after 3 weeks SO4 was almost dead off the list and Demon's Souls, released weeks previous to SO4 was STILL ranking higher). Copies of the game are on backorder at every major retailer STILL.

And considering the 360s lead over the PS3 in terms of user-base and the advertising that went into these 360 "exclusive" games (many of which are migrating over to the PS3, not the other way around), selling 400-500K worth of something really isn't that impressive. That's why the slew of JRPG announcements for the PS3 lately. And the ports.

And since you're pulling figures from VGchartz. Let's look at the most telling tale to date:

http://vgchartz.com/games/g...

Star Ocean 4. A major, exclusive (well it's about as "exclusive" as Vesperia, and we all know what happened there) JRPG. It's not even at 400K yet. Sold next to nothing in America and I highly doubt that Europe's release will push it past 500K.

P.S. And more relative to the article. IUD was a mess, with some of the worst (most annoying) voice acting to date. I played through a good 8 hours of that game before canning it. And this reasoning that gamers just need to "play it till it improves" is ridiculous. A good game, one that is captivating and well designed get's you from the start. Everything about IUD and Last Remnant for that matter was mediocre, and the technical issues in both titles didn't help. You want a solid, old-school JRPG play Lost Odyssey. Clocked almost 100 hours into that title, most fun I've had on my 360.

First of all ... no one should expect a tactical rpg to perform as well or better in sales than big jrpgs unless from the following series : Final fantasy tactics , super robot taisen .

What it accomplished is a little miracle , thought with the help of the re-release and the anime serie .
I always disagreed with people saying it sold poorly before those . it did well given the genre . And never did Sega complains about it neither .
It's just the overall sentiment that it should have performed better given it's quality and raving critics , wich is true .

Sega released the game again because of the anime , wich is a smart move .

Anyway popinsky in his massive attempt to spin the fiasco , of course forgot games like White knight chronicles or demon souls (btw innacurate figures from vgchartz and wich dont even includes the asian version) , who already or are already outperforming 360 jrpgs ..

He also forgot that even the pretty good Vesperia as been outsold by a portable tales spin off ... something i believe unseen before . The game is also so far , though it could change , selling lower than the least favorite main title of the franchise : Tales of legendia .

I also again find ludicrous to pit big jrpg against tactical rpgs (again valkyria , and disgaea 3) , a definitive , on each generation , sub genre of the genre in sales .

At last people developped enough on So4 from once a million selling franchise ... struggling to get beyond 400k...

10.9 - lol at the star ocean nonsense
only one star ocean sold past 1 million, and it was on a console with a user base of 120 million. Not to mention that star ocean 3 was simply the best in the series by far. Next you will tell me that the tales games will do better on ps3... even though the only tales game that sold over a million was oddly enough on gamecube. Don't believe me? Just look how awesome eternal sonata sold on ps3 lol, (bad game by the way). Anyway, Im actually a ps3 supporter but thought I would point out the obvious that nobody seems to want to see. Technically, the PS2 is still the RPG king, even this gen so far. Everyone assumes that JRPG's do poorly in N.A, yet about every Shin Megami Tensei game for the PS2, has done well for sales. Persona 3/FES/4 have each done approximately 200K in North America with a global average total of 500K each. This is better than most JRPG's on the 360 and PS3.

I lost my momentum with IU after my console RROD. I still have the game (though I might trade it in to cover some of the cost of upcoming releases), but I got hooked back onto Fallout after the DLC began coming out--having to borrow my bro-in-law's 360 to play it.

I never like to leave a game half done though, so I might pick up another 360 towards the end of the year (to play MW 2) and finish up both the L & D (which I played right up to when you become chapter president) and IU.

The reason it remains undiscovered is because it's crap just like Project Slypheed on the 360. Square has released NOTHING but CRAP on the next gen consoles. Hell even mid way through the PS2, they were already faltering bigtime. It's just that it's a lot more noticeable with the western market really coming into its own now that consoles are a reasonable representation of what a pc is.

I love how you swear and attack me, instead of looking at the actual game itself. Do you not realize how much of a crap fest IU is? Or that I actually owned a 360 before I got a PS3? Or that Tri Ace has been on the downturn since Star Ocean 3 on the PS2? Apparently not as you love to cling to Square/Tri Aces former greatness which has dimmed quite a bit this generation where they are only truly revered by their die hard fans. And the fact that I actually praise tales of vesperia and lost odyssey mean nothing as they're actually games worth playing? You need to wake up and stop worshipping a company that hasn't produced anything worthwhile on home consoles in quite a while.

It's one thing to casually say that you played IUD and it sucked ass. It's hard to respect your opinion in any matter when you basically bash the 360 and any RPG that comes out on it all the time, fanboy. I think I remember you calling Mass Effect garbage as well for all its tech issues. And yet, thank god I didn't trust your opinion because I bought it and played it and I didn't suffer enough issues to render it unplayable. So if you're gonna say a game sucks then say a game sucks for you. But the guy who wrote this article made some good points about IUD and you just made a baseless criticism about the game without any evidence. No one is going to get anything constructive from your posts. You might as well write, "This game sucks donkey balls" and be on your way.
