Multi-Platform Follow Up: Count out Lost Planet & Dead Rising
36
A few days ago I posted a podcast from 1up.com that stated "important xbox360 exclusives coming over to the PS3". Heavy speculation derived at the conclusion it would be capcom bringing over 2 of their xbox exclusives Lost Planet and Dead Rising. In this blog posted quote by Christian Svensson Capcom Entertainment Inc's. - Sr. Director of Strategic Planning & Research he states in a question an answer:
Q: "What I am wondering, is since Capcom has claimed "Capcom is committed to making its titles available to as wide an audience as possible," does that mean Capcom will be making games that were exclusive to the Xbox 360 cross platform as they did with Devil May Cry or is that quote from Capcom more of just a PR man doing their job? Thanks"
Christian Svensson: "The answer is Dead Rising and Lost Planet are not slated to appear on Wii or PS3 as far as current plans go. The reasons for this are quite convoluted and I'm bound by NDAs on these matters so I can't divulge why this is the situation."

I'm betting everything they make is eventually going multiplatform, it's just a question of what and when. The NDA portion is probably keeping back the fact that everything's eventually coming out for everything.

7 - Total B/S on Capcom's part
quote from Capcom:
"We are certainly moved that people are so passionate about our products that they would go to such extremes. At the same time we feel that allowing more people access to our content pleases far more people than it displeases (after all, we're not denying DMC4 to anyone that was already going to get it). It really is the best decision for the company and for consumers."
Okay, what the hell is this crap now? DMC4 is A-ok, but ummm...just not Dead Rising and Lost Planet? hahaha damn.

7.1 - Don't be mad at Capcom
It’s like many of us have been saying before Christmas, the PS3 is going to continue to lose exclusives because they don’t have enough consoles sold. DMC3 sold about 1.4 million on the PS2 and the PS2 had sold over 60 million consoles. So now look at the PS3 it’s only sold around 1.5 million consoles. Sorry but they wouldn’t sale enough DMC4 games to make up the extra development cost the PS3 adds on. Not to say PS2 owners were known for a horrible attach rate. If Capcom expect to be a company that produces games in the future it’s a smart move.

At this point why bother just make the sequels multi-platform. I don't know why this is such a big deal to people. The only exclusives left anymore will be the Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft branded ones.

9 - My money is on...
Bioshock going multiplatfrom, or a new rendition of Street Fighter. You will see them (Dead Rising, Lost Planet) remain exclusive to the xbox360, in addition to their sequals. The reason; you guessed it, Microsoft shelling out large amounts of cash to keep it that way.
Simple fact: Sony has a much larger 1st party development support. They are betting on these titles to bring the bang to the party, as they don't like having to give in to companies like was the case in GTA. More money is to be made by have a 1st party hit for the company. They have more control internally as well.
Microsoft on the other hand had a lousy run at 1st party games last round, with the exceptions of Halo and Forza. This made reliance on third party exclusives a must for the old system. The way you are going to secure a third party exclusive is either through a heavy payout, footing the bill for developing the title, or paying the publishing/distribution/advert ising costs, or all of the above.

12 - ALL COMING TO PASS!!!
Once again. Sony and their predictions:
Sony said: "This generation of gaming will not be determined by 3rd party support but by each companies ability to produce first party games"...
Now I even see microsoft fans who onced laughed at Sony... agreeing..
Come on guys face it. They knew what the hell they were talking about.
(Below) (SORRY I DONT HAVE ENOUGH BUBBLES FOR A DECENT DISPUTE WITH YOU) YOU CAN THANK THE FANBOYS ON THIS SITE FOR THAT !!!
@ OldSchool: You read what I said but you didnt take in my point of view. Yes it is vital. Of course. We all know MGS,FF ETC. are not 1st Party. At the same time. Im saying it in the sense it will not be the sole deciding factor. Basically its saying
"If you think the console wars are going to be won this generation just by buying up all the 3rd party support then your wrong"
Thats the best way to translate it. And if thats taking into context its true. The first big point being. YOu cannot buy up all the 3rd party suppport without putting yourself in financial trouble. These games are not cheap to make. Im not saying 3rd party isnt important. OF course it is. Im just saying it wont decide the console wars for reasons like this. All these guys want money they are going to start going multi plat and im pretty sure Sony and Microsoft both new that. But Microsoft decided to beat their chest and make it seem like games are jumping ship because the Xbox is that much better of a console. Meanwhile truth be told its all about Money. Microsoft pays... and if Sony doesnt pay then The 3rd party company jumps ship and goes multi to make back profit. Microsoft cannot possibly buy all the 3rd party companies. I dont care how much money they have. "its not cheap to release a modded version of your console within 2 years" ...Money has to go to other things and as PS3's market share rises. You will see the pendulum swing both ways and games the where once thought Microsoft exclusive...go back to sony (multi-plat)...

12.1 - 3rd Party support is still vital...
1st party products, don't get me wrong, can have a big impact on sales, as these games are developed with huge company support. The importance of third party titles cannot be overlooked though. The biggest franchises for PS2, FF, MGS, and GTA were 3rd party, as were many of the successes on the original xbox. Development costs are just getting increasingly higher, while prices for the games remain relatively constant. So, their will be less exclusives here on out, unless the parent company is willing (as I posted above) to shell out a large sum of money, foot the bill for development costs, and/or pay for publishing/distribution/advert ising, or simply they know they are going to go multiplatinum (sell many millions of copies). Even in the case of going multiplatinum, a game that popular is going to make even more money going multiplatform, so don't expect too many exclusives, unless that money is paid out by the parent company.
PS fanboys...If you disagree post a thought out comment.

Sony were right in that FOR Sony 1st party is essential. They have a mass of games in development and loads we don't know about. Which is frustrating, but a good thing. They will start rolling out by May.
Third party is important, and it would be nice to have both. Microsoft have a different tact and they can afford to do that.
But there is no getting away from the fact that for Sony 1st and 2nd party is make or break.
MGS4 and Final Fantasy 13 are still very important - especially MGS in the west.
GT below: It is typical for those not interested in the PS3 not to research their exclusives, as there are many quality titles coming up. As I say, the only reason I will buy it is because of those exclusive titles. Ratchet, Heavenly Sword, Lair, Uncharted, and the future GOW3...they are my type of games...couldn't really care less about Killzone.

12.3 - I agree 3rd Party support is still vital...
My thought is what 1st party games has Sony developed that has had the impact of GTA or Final Fantasy? I would say Microsoft has come the closest with HALO in 1st party developed games. Not only that you can’t tell me that if Sony looses Final Fantasy as an exclusive it wouldn’t hurt them big time…

Answer - Gran Turismo (3 of them in the top 20 selling games of all time - ps. you won't find Halo in that list)
Others include God of War (recently a surge in sales, with God of War being number2 behind GOW2)
Spyro, Crash Bandicoot (both in top 20 selling franchises of all time - ps. No Halo)
Jak, Ratchet,
HOWEVER, GTA, Final Fantasy and Metal Gears are way up the top. They were very important, and they still are.
In addition, there's no getting away from the fact that Microsoft know how to target the hardcore gamer. If you buy an xbox you want to play games (nearly all of the time) and you will buy the exclusives outright. That's why the attachment rate is so high for xbox. Even if there were twice as many PS3's in peoples homes, the sales of the same games on the 360 would rival them.

Point is they did. And especially Gran Turismo. PS. I didn't list the ones I liked, I listed the best selling ones and the ones on the best selling games of all time. Sorry to rain on your parade, but those games are among GTA and Final Fantasy.
Just so you know. GTA combined - 50 million
Final Fantasy - 64 million combined
Gran Turismo - 44million combined.
Crash Bandicoot - 34million combined
Spyro - 17 million combined
Halo - 14.7 million
Best Selling PS1 Games -
# Gran Turismo (10.5 million)
# Final Fantasy VII (9.8 million, includes Final Fantasy VII International)
# Gran Turismo 2 (8.5 million)
# Tomb Raider II (8 million)
# Tomb Raider (7 million)
# Crash Bandicoot (6.8 million)
# Metal Gear Solid (6.6 million)
# Final Fantasy VIII (6 million)
Best Selling PS2 games -
# Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (14 million)
# Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (13 million)
# Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)
# Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)
# Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)
# Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million shipped)
# Final Fantasy X (5 million)
Halo 2 - 8million - so yes my friend the numbers are there to disprove your unresearched point.
GOW is still selling as I said (number 2 best selling ps2 game at the moment behind GOW2 in the US)...and GOW2 is just starting to sell (not released here) so expect the numbers to change dramatically.

12.8 - Correction to my Post
Correction I looked at the numbers to GT for the PSONE and it did sale well. However for the PS2 GTA was top.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...
Leaving GTA right behind Mario for most sells. GT did make top 20 of all time, FFVII top 10. Halo or any MS game was not on the top 20 but according to the list it would have made 20 because it had around the same sales as Tomb Raider.
Grand Theft Auto and Final Fantasy are listed in the top 6 for most sales from a franchise. So I will say they matter, however GT maters also. So if your not Nintendo 3rd party support seems to matter according to the list.
While I think GOW is a great game it still didn't make it to the list.

13 - How is this good for Sony?
DMC was a title naturally associated with the PlayStation brand. The fact that most, if not all 3rd party exclusives will be multi-platform will mean lesser of a reason for people to invest in a PS3.
The PS2's success, or atleast a large part of it, was the variation of games and its massive massive 3rd party support.
Now the reasons to spend £425 are getting cut.
"Why spend that much on this console when i can get the same game on a cheaper console?"
Sony are only right in this case if their 1st party support justifies the price tag to the consumer. The only game i can think of is KillZone 2 and i'm damned if you ever see me saying it's worth the price difference.

15 - When MS funds a game (ie. publishes it) they make exclusive deals and get it in writing.
Therefore, these games are just the same as 1st party as far as never seeing the light of day on another console. Right off the bat you've got Gears, Alan Wake, Halo Wars, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, Infinite Undiscovery, Mass Effect Trilogy, Too Human trilogy, etc. that fall into this category. Not to mention the games made by companies owned by MS, like Halo, Forza, PGR, Fable, Viva Pinata, Shadowrun, etc. which are 1st party.
So while Sony may have more employees working on games, MS is funding and securing the rights to more games. This why the 360 currently has more exclusives than the PS3 or Wii. I'm not sure what some of the previous post are getting at, because to me it looks like MS so far is doing the best job of securing and creating exclusives for its new console, especially when it had the least last gen.

Capcom loves their semantics - they said they have no plans to bring DEAD RISING or LOST PLANET to other consoles, do they mention possible sequels? No
Remember, what shane benhaussen said was that it was a FRANCHISE that DEBUTED on the xbox 360 - this means that its a sequel to a game already out on the 360, im still betting on dead rising 2

Err.. I think you need to take another look at the statistics:
"Just so you know. GTA combined - 50 million
Final Fantasy - 64 million combined
Gran Turismo - 44million combined.
Crash Bandicoot - 34million combined
Spyro - 17 million combined
Halo - 14.7 million"
Considering final fantasy has had at least 15 games under its franchise, gran turismo at least 5,GTA at least 8 (including three that were multiplatform... no wait, at least 5 that were multiplatform) crash bandicoot at least 7, and spyro at least 7 or 8 (inclduing handheld sales) - Halo is doing ok for itself seeing as only two games have been released..... on average, per game its sold more than ALL of the above :D

Chacron, though I agree Halo is a great seller...it is still PER game not on the top 20.
GTA is higher (14million, 13million, 11million), GT is higher (11million, 10.5 million, 8.5million), Final Fantasy is higher (9.8 million), Halo (5million, 8million) - you obv didn't look at my ps1 and ps2 best selling seperate games. Read people. Per game Halo is not higher than them either...in fact neither games gets on the top 20 best selling GAMES (not franchises) of all time. We can agree that for the amount of consoles it is the best selling ever...but that's an entirely different claim Chacron
POG correct :)

20 - Just an informed OPINION...
But here it is. As stated by many developers, the 360 is easier to develop for, with better tools and better support. Sony's stand has been "well, PS3 is going to be #1, so devs will spend the time/money to learn to develop for the PS3, we don't have to help them" kind of thing. So, most multiplatform (PS3 and 360) games are being developed using the 360 as the LEAD development platform, then being ported to the PS3. Look at Assassins Creed-- supposed to be PS2 exclusive, was shown at E3 running on 360 dev kit, now its multi but 360 version farther along. Mercenaries 3-- same deal, now all vids are from 360 version. So, Capcom, having released Lost Planet and Dead Rising for the 360 already, are ALMOST CERTAINLY developing DMC 4 on 360 first. They have had 360 dev. kits longer, experience using them, and excellent sales of their games on 360. THIS is probably the info. protected by the NDA's-- that not only is Devil May Cry being released on 360, it was being developed for 360 first and foremost ALL ALONG, but perhaps they don't want Sony to know that.
