New Xbox360 Disc Protections? Bans to follow?

Xorloser noticed the other day that when FIFA'09 for Xbox360 is patched with the latest update, the flags that specify what media the game is allowed to run from have changed. Originally it was allowed to boot from a standard original Xbox360 disc, however now it is only allowed to boot from a new media type which is basically an updated version of the original Xbox360 disc type.

Those who have ever looked into the depths of the Xbox360 disc authentication scheme know that a "new" type of disc authentication has been in the works since the Xbox360 was released. It is known as the AntiPiracy v2.5 checks, or AP2.5. Is this FIFA'09 patch a sign that AP2.5 is finally going to see the light of day? If so then the ban hammer is going to come down hard.

If by modders you mean those who mod their games for an advantage over players and not modders who take precious time to make practically a new game at no cost to you.

1.3 - ban them?
without modders there'd be no 360....i had a modded original xbox and trust me when i say this...half of ms ideas on the 360 were not their own. half the stuff on the 360 were in the modded xboxes. they just turned around, made u pay them for it and called it-next gen.

well for me the most important thing was being able to have the game on the hdd(full game), hdd upgrades. downloading wallpapers, files online(gamesaves were awesome), xbmc, being a able to ftp files from pc to xbox and other things.

I agree.
The xbox1 was hugely more useful when modded.
The xbox1 was the best console last gen.

For those who don't know, modding an xbox allowed you to save entire games on hdd, play movies without purchasing a remote, install emulators (mame, psx!), store movies on the hdd, etc...

It just made the whole thing about twice as useful.

Oh, and you could easily copy games, but of course i have never done that.

basically modded xbox360+ RROD = M$ sells several more xbox360.
no warrant for the modded xbox360 + pirates willing to pay another 199 bucks and get their game for free = more and more console sales...

I do alot of readin on a variety of sites and soemthing tells me that this is something that was already detected and worked on by the community. I think that it also uses something from the NXE update which the community has already figured out a workaround to.

3.1 - What a coincidence! Just READING that article caused my Elite to E74 then RROD!!!
Then flashed the 3 red lights 74 times before finally demanding a Wii & PS3 sacrificial disk which it proceeded to grind a ceremonial ring of death into...Only then did it start working normally again.

Oh why Microsoft...WHY don't you simply post this sacrificial repair at XBOX.com - I and all other 360 Gamers or Worshipers would gladly sacrifice every counter-console disc we own to you to appease the E74-RROD Demon Gods!

. . .

Jack, just keep this in mind...such a sacrifice makes you ban & RROD proof!

Doesn't this sound like the serial verification that sony wanted to implement pre ps3 release that sent everyone into riot mode? where a disc would lock itself to your console and couldn't be shared or traded?

which would have made the PS3 fail.

Hard.

And Sony would've totally deserved it.

Totally.

and I would've cheered the PS3's demise if they implemented that.

Once I buy a disc, it's mine to do what I want with it; if you have a problem with that, then you don't deserve customers.

4.3 - I 100% agree with Pixelsword on this one.
Thankfully, Sony didn't implement this tech.

I would not have bought a PS3 if they had. Think about it. If the disks imprinted themselves on your console and only played on that console - you couldn't rent games, trade in games, lend games to friends buy used games. You can understand why Sony (and developers) would love to have seen this implemented but thankfully cooler heads prevailed. The PS3 would have been dead on arrival, and rightly so.

If MS is foolish enough to release a "digital distribution" hub next gen like Shane Kim hinted at all it takes is for their competitor not to follow suit to doom that console as well.

All I will say is that the story is fake and the guy has no idea what he's talking about. Anyone who's involved with the scene knows what's really down and it started with HAWX, not FIFA '09.

7 - Ban modded consoles?? Too bad hackers are 3 steps ahead.
Wasn't HAWX fixed already that has the "new" protection? I read blogs on how it was cracked. Also, the people mad about modders are usually jealous or too stupid to get their own system modded.

Modders do not bother me, a game will cost $60 regardless of hackers/modders or not. The proof goes back to cartridge days which were uncopyable by 99.9% of everyone... the cost was still just as high. Since Microsoft doesn't care about storage size, I think cartridges are a stark reality for them to stave off hackers. Let those losers put Mass Effect 3 on a 15 cartridge set.

All I can say is, that is what they get for reselling PC based technology in their consoles as a new tech. Were they not warned with the super high PC pirating ratio? It is funny that the PS3 remains unhacked and is on a storage medium not economically feasible for the average Joe to experiment copying the games on. Three Bluray coasters = cost of the game.

Microsoft built a vehicle for piracy when they made the 360... it is super easy to mod, and I am shocked that over 50 percent of 360 owners aren't modders. We are currently paying a $60 premium on DVD9 discs, while we pay the same $60 for 25GB counterparts... go figure, it is Microsoft, they deserve to be pirated.

7.1 - You need some clue on PC part
Please take a look at http://www.youtube.com/watc...

I know it's long (almost an hour), but it really describes in detail, how 360 is different from the original (thus also from a PC), which steps MS had taken for security, and finally why it fell short.

And when done, you can also check http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... . Basically both 360 and PS3 chips were designed by the same company (IBM). And they are pretty custom designs.
Shut this user up Let user speak
artsaber - 201 days 4 hours ago
7.2 - Wrong, stop wikipedia-ing stuff and use your skull.
DVD9 is a standard tech even in the crappiest PC you can buy. To use this medium with a laughable attempt at using odd coding methods to protect the content is ludacris.

It is simple you plutonic jackazz, can you draw the similarities?

PCs+DVD = Pirated PC games
360+DVD = Pirated Console games
PS3+Bluray = No Suitable Pirating solution for the public.

As of now: PS3 Security > 360 + PC security.

Wikipedia that...

Wikipedia iXtreme while you're at it. The latest version(or something similar) will beat this "new" disc structure/process. It is inevitable... hackers always win in the end. Just ask a Windows OS, or Hawx... it has already been hacked.

By your logic, my PC has a blu-ray, and my friend's PS3 has blu-ray too. Blu-rays are copiable (even PS3 games, yes). So PS3 is a PC. (No I don't believe this, just demonstrating your logic).

Come on, the problem with 360 is not using a DVD drive, but storing the DVD drive authentication key chip on the drive itself. Please watch the thing it's very informative.

erm i had addon machines for both the snes and n64 that enabled copies to be used. we used floppy's for the snes and cd's for the n64. the machines wern't cheap but if my memory is right they both cost lest than £100 and bought direct off the manafacture. another thing complaining about the media your current gen machine uses is funny imo. why does it matter if your disc is on a dvd9 or a bluray? yeah the dvd's are cheaper to buy so i suppose they make a bit more profit on the manafacturing stage but the game is the same so worth the same money. if the price bothers you so much just wait a week and buy a second hand copy for slightly less if you feel cheated

I know a guy that mods 360's...and he sells all games for $10 a piece.

In these economic times not having to drop $60 on a game you want is very tempting especially when your only paying $10 bucks.

But yeah MSFT will NEVER figure out how to catch a pirated game once it's stealth ready.

but yet they figure it out every time and the cycle repeats

you act like microsoft are clueless, some of the people at work at microsoft are 30x the "hackers" you find cracking/pirating games, don't be that arrogant

every console goes through this, and ps3 will go through it eventually as well

their goal isn't to stop it because they know it isn't possible, their goal is to keep it manageable which they do

Yeah.. it just bans the XBOX from LIVE. it doesn't make it stop.. I don't mod my XBOX.. its on warrenty and i like LIVE.. but i know people that mod it and play on LIVE as well..

I'm playing it safe for now.. when the next xbox comes out i may mod my 360 and play all those games i thought about but never saw as worth my money to buy. for now unmodded i go.. with EBAY and a lil patience you can get a lot of games on the cheap. I got GTA4 on JAN off ebay for $25 canadian with shipping and currently it is probably my most played game.

also as for PIRACY.. MS is still getting some money off that.. my friend has GTA4 and a modded XBOX so its not original GTA4 and he bought Lost and Damned. funny thing is he owns the original GTA4 on PS3 as well..

15 - The Outcome
If you have a genuinely purchased copy of FIFA 09 and your disk you can sleep easy.

If not hopefully you will lose your live account, and hopefully your IP will also be banned from live and you will learn that theft has penaltys and can count yourself lucky your not facing criminal charges as that is what you are, a criminal.

I'm not jealous because I can't hack my console and invalidate the warranty, I'm not jealous that I don't have the technical ability to steal from a company no matter how rich they are. I'm proud to support an industry I love and to be an honest and decent person.
