Why numbering a game get's old

The Start Screen writes,

Last fall Activision did a little switcharoo and decided not to number their latest addition to the Call of Duty franchise. However everyone and their mother insisted on calling it Call of Duty 5: World at War or CoD 5. Thing is people don't realize that the folks over at Activision are doing themselves a favor by getting rid of the number within the franchise. Do yourselves a favor and jump.

I really don't think it matters much. A clever title is not going make up for poor gameplay, and a numbered title isn't going to harm good gameplay.

Also, for devs and publishers, it's a toss up between being seen as a new IP which may hamper sales, or being seen as milking a franchise, which may have the same affect.

If it's a good fun game, I personally could care less whether it's numbered of subtitled.
