Zombies In Games: The Truly 'Undead' - Are they dying off?

From OXCGN:

"Zombies have always been a part of the gaming landscape. From early '80s games such as the imaginatively titled "Zombie Zombie" on the ZX Spectrum right up to Left 4 Dead on the Xbox 360 and PC, gamers have been shooting, chopping, sawing, cutting, stabbing, beating and generally causing all sorts of abuse to our brain-eating undead friends.

However, with the release of Resident Evil 5 and its 'not-zombies', are gamers slowly getting tired of slaughtering the mindless shambling hordes?"

The difference with Dead Rising though is that I can kill Zombies with way more weapons and "hilarious" methods than anything else offers with the same ol guns.

I loved Left4Dead, even though I don't like zombies per-se, the game was excellent with them, as it really did match the storyline. Resi 5's undead sure can scare the pants off you at times.

While at a recent closed doors THQ hands-on, many game vet jumped and squelled as the 'undead' crowded around trying to bite your bloody head off. and that Excecutioner . . .omg .. scary as.

I like Capcoms "they aren't zombies" . . when they are sort of 'undead' . . so what constitutes a "zombie then" . . someone who is alive but not dead (undead) . . or dead, but not alive (unAlive).

I'm glad Far Cry 2 didn't go down the old well and truly trodden zombie path. I would not have even considered the game if it had. And I think many had the same thoughts.

Personally I could do without the whole zombie thing in just about every game. Sure, put them in some, but not just about game.

Well the Nazi Zombies mode in COD: WAW was a pretty cool addition...felt a lot like Left 4 Dead sometimes.

Yeah i have never been a fan of the RE4 and RE5 human zombies...

I know its part of the story.... but yeah the true zombie needs to be featured more... especially in games that defined zombie horror games....

5 - Should I play Resident Evil 4 before I play RE 5?
Or will that just make Res 5 suck more?

Although Giant Bomb reckons its ace and the cutscenes are better than those in MGS4! :O

One of my favourite all time games is Resident Evil 4. Not sure what it'd be like playing it after being used to the 'this' generation games, but at the time it was divine. I still like it, despite its limitations.

Hey, Gears of War was inspired by it....

6 - I really love zombies
Most of all in Dead Rising - they were 'true' zombies.

It does seem like these days most games don't have 'zombies' anymore, they have 'Rage-virus (or similar) infected humans'.

I really don't know if other than Dead Rising regular zombies will appear in any more games...

For a Zombie game to be a good game i think it really need to do somethign special with the Zombies so that it is not that same old tried formula of a zombie game..

Like Dead Rising the methods of killing zombies and the amount of ways you could was awesome... CoD:WaW Zombie Mode was a nice addition to further the feel of co-op and having a good time which was great.

A game can't just have zombies in it for the sake of it because then it doesn't feel as fun.

Problem for me, being a huge zombie fan I am a sucker for the games. Even if it has bad reviews I have to go out and get a copy of the game. Zombie Hunters II anyone? :)
