GDC: Lost Planet creator disses Clover

Keiji Inafune airs out Capcom's dirty laundry and has some harsh words to say to the company's former development team.

"Perhaps I might get into trouble if I say this in front of people from the mass media. Games are not a work of art. It's actually a product. If we think of it as a work of art, then... when we think about Picasso and Van Gogh's paintings, the end result is beauty, so it doesn't matter if you sell it or not. However for games, it's a product. It is a commodity. The producer has to think about that."

He is correct about video games being a product. Even if your product is the highest rated item, if you can't market it properly and sell it, then you won't survive.

I don’t agree games are art, how can they not be art? They hire artist and programmers to make the games. What about the music in the games I think musician might get a tad bit p!ssed if you called his music product over art. Don’t forget they also use professional writers, so when they use a Combination of all the things above it becomes kinda like a cinematic interactive experience. "Art"

Yeah "Works of Art" and "Products" are one in the same....if an "artist" creates a great painting, he can keep it for himself and appreciate its beauty but that isn't going to pay the rent, much less allow him to continue to purchasing art supplies....but even this beautiful work of has art to be displayed/advertised in art shows/exhibits so that the artist can get the best possible financial reimbursement for his work. -No different for game developers except it costs alot of $$$ to make a game and companies absolutely "must" sell their "works of art" to stay in business.

Thinking of everything as a product before everything else is exactly the thing that kills risk-taking, kills creativity and it is - e.g. in the film industry - the reason for the amount of barely watchable sh1te produced. People don't mind, though, which is sad, we will see where it will lead us...

7.1 - Well that depends....

yeah if you make a product solely for the purpose of financial gain then yes it kills creativity and "greatness" of the product itself for that matter, not saying something created just to make money can't be good....it just that most likely it would have been alot better than what you actually ended up with, had you focused only on its content and less on just making something for sale. For example, I think once again refering to a talented artist who makes great paintings....of course the end result is to sell at least "some" of his paintings at some point, but he paints each painting because he love's his artwork, he believes in what he does -he doesn't paint while thinking what colors, backgrounds, ideas, etc. will sell better, because at that point he loses HIS orginality, -NO, he just paints his vision, then people either love it, like it, or hate it. -Either way if he has a *relatively decent/good reputation(talent) then "somebody" will buy it....just like videogames.

VJ and Okami are excellente game, AND they're artistic.

Okami bombed in Japan, but that's because japanese gamers aren't fan of action adventure games. Hell, even ZELDA doesn't sell great there. Wiiplay sells like three times more.

So capcom decided not to distribute the game widely in US and EU.
That was a stupid move, and Clover isn't responsible.

Van Gogh didn't sell anything in his lifetime. Zip. Nada.

I don't know if games are art, but when they are, it's not because of it's looks. that's just decoration.
it has to be the hole package, and tasts differ.

has got absolutely NOTHING on okami. ok its got nice grafix on HDTV, but its just a normal shoot-em-up. okami, on the other hand, has a concept never before seen. it was a breath of fresh air, and in my opinion is gonna be up their in the game of the year awards. shame on this guy for tryin to 'diss' okami....

Everybody knows and remember Picasso and Van Gogh's legacy and their marvelous work, but no one will remember this guy and his poor job. At least okami have the acclaim of critics and gamers, have alredy won various awards, but lost planet have nothing.

16.1 - impressionist

Artist like Van Gogh lived poor because while he was alive he got no respect. Picasso lived like Jay Z because he got respect while he was alive. If Keiji Inafune dies people will change their mind. I personally think Lost Planet was great. The only thing I would take away from it would be the lame cut scenes. Some of them were just too immature. I think they were going for some type of rhythmic humor but they kind missed the mark.

I like Van Gogh more than Picasso. Mainly due to his subject matter and how everything from his brush stokes to the hues, made the painting come to life emotionally. Picasso was just an I do it my way new age impressionist whose painting were blatantly different because they distorted reality upfront. What do you think?

Hm I dunno. Picasso saw the world in his eyes and presented a subjective view, instead of trying to recreate the world. Also Picasso had many "periods"...so it's not all surrealism.

maybe cause you're another annoying fanboy like the Mart? :D and Lost Planet is a boring shoot em up, i couldn't even finish the game, many of my friends that have more than one console were saying that Lost Planet is just a mediocre stupid shooting game... btw I played Okami and God Hand (played also Viewtiful joe on PS2 and lately on PSP, but that game was too fast for me ;) those people with epilepsy should stay away from that game :D ), and i must say that Clover became my top secret "underground" dev team, that have fresh ideas + crazy humor :D

Some films can be art...some games can be art...I consider Okami, Shadow of Collossus and Ico to be art....oh and maybe flOw...I know there are others out there.

Okami won lots of awards...even game of the year from some. It's actually a God who has been reincarnated as a dog...and has to restore beauty to the world )along those lines right). The game is presented in the aesthetics of Chinese Brush painting and is probably one of the best looking games around. So when you laugh "hahahahaha" it's derogitory and patronising. Just because all your interested in is FPS, don't belittle other games.
