Destructoid: The most anticipated Xbox 360 games of 2009

Destructoid writes:

"Way back in 2006, Grim and I started the tradition of praising our most anticipated Xbox 360 games each year, and this year we're starting things off nice and early. Last year we both picked some good ones and had the pleasure of seeing most of our choices reach their expected release dates. This year we see a few games return, plenty of new faces and a very promising early schedule for Xbox 360 owners."

Hrm, after reading the little closing message on this article I don't know if this is going to end well.

"Sure, we're not very far into 2009 at all, but as of now, there's no 360 exclusive that I'm really stoked about. Making this list wasn't easy. I hope you realize that 2009 is really looking like the year PS3 finally wears the crown. If you have to throw more money at developers, do it. Make it happen."

Can't say MS isn't asking for this with all their secrecy for their upcoming games line-up or maybe they really don't have anything in terms of exclusives to get people excited about. I can say right now there is nothing exclusive on the 360 in 09 that has me excited. It seems to be in MS's DNA to screw anything good they have up by starting to coast before a race is over, hope this isn't the case. If they think a rehash of Halo 3 and a Halo console RTS is there answer to Sony they are in for a serious azz kicking.

They just need more first party dev's kicking out juice. The problem is they don't have very many first party dev's.

It's time for a new original IP?

The premise of Alan Wake really intrigues me, I'll play through the crappiest mechanics if a game really has a story that shines, I'm hoping it will deliver.

Overall though, if Microsoft is hiding big-guns I'd like to see them soon.

1.2 - MASSIVE reply.
I was going to mention something similar before you, but didn't, now that you have I will.

The main fact now is that basically due to the economy the tables have turned.
All publishers want games multiplat to make money everywhere and this is where MS has gone wrong, even tracing back to the XBOX days.
Getting rid of developers willing to be published like Oddworld Inhabitants and liquidating Digital Anvil were indeed not wise moves at all. Because it has really shortened down the inhouse parties and people willing to work exclusively under contract with them.

Now, if you look at the 'must have exclusives' from 06/07 (which made me buy the 360), a large percentage of those said games were NOT published by Microsoft. They were published by the likes of Take 2, Capcom and EA and now those said companies want MORE money, so the 360 exclusives will decline, because whatever MS gives, the added profit of the product for 360 AND PS3 will make more.

The thing is, compared to the collection of developers willing to work with and the inhouse developers of Sony, this is where everything turns upside for Sony, most of these developers will ONLY make games for Sony as Sony is purely their publisher or parent company.

Anyway, my opinion, the best things exclusively for 360 are The Maw, Alan Wake, Rare titles and Crackdown 2, maybe new franchises, exclusive DLC and more definate Halo spinoffs.
The rest of the franchises have more than probably moved on to multiplat dev and this will undoubtedly affect the amount of quality exclusives on the 360 and especially the sequels of franchises will move onto both consoles, like Bioshock 2 and srong rumour has it, Dead Rising 2.

This is why I've always mainly backed Sony, they have a great collection of developers at their call with companies with close ties to their inhouse, such as Ready At Dawn, Hign Impact Games and BigRedButton and some great franchises that they could choose to bring back and not all of said developers have even mentioned projects.
Not the same can be said for Microsoft and it's mainly due to their stupid decisions back on the XBOX and early life of the 360 involving developers.

Harsh but true logic parade over. I will stand corrected if MS announce any exclusive 'megatons' this year.

EDIT: Also, another good thing to point out is that all Sony inhouse and associated developers share tech and are deeply networked since the PS2, not the same can be said about MS and the 360.

Yeah Cajun, I hate to say it but Sony was thinking ahead of time. They got some pretty talented studio's under their wing. However I think Microsoft will re-evaluate their strategies because I think personally they caught on to this.

Money only gets you so far with outside players/third parties. You really gotta grab em by the balls and take them as a first party studio and then you can pump out exclusives without fear of them losing credibility in a traditional sense.

It's interesting how it's playing out now it really is because Microsoft's strategy worked pretty good up until now where it's not looking as good as it could be.

Maybe Xbox 360 is just bound to become a multi-plat system?

Im looking forward to Forza 3. Hopefully a new Conker will come. Ninja blade looks retarded, Halo recon is a waste of money. I dont know, 2009 looks pretty bleak when it comes to exclusives, but you know that the 360 is gonna be the best console to play your multiplats on. COD6, Aliens:Colonial Marines, Borderlands, StormRise, Fear 2. I cant imagine playing any of those games on the psn. Only the exclusives have good online on the ps3.

@ wil4hire ~
"This is what I dont get, if the crown = having more quality games. The PS3 took 2008. Right?"

Correct. The Wii had SOME good first party titles and LOTS of shovelware. The 360 had SOME good first party titles in 2008 and a bunch of multiplats. The PS3 had MORE first party titles (that also scored VERY high along with winning LOTS of awards) and the same multiplats.

There is nothing NOBODY can say that will change those facts. In 2008 the PS3 handily had the all around best games to play. 2009 looks to be the same, but don't assume that MS & Ninty will have "nothing" because of the actuality that right now they are a bit slim (we'll have to wait and see). But it is not far fetched to surmise that with the lower number of "in house first party devs" that there would be a lower number of games that are original IP's to differentiate themselves from the pack.

You cannot rely on a 3rd party product. They do help that is true, IF they are exclusive. But that is not always the case and you cannot rest everything on something the competitor will have access to as well...

2 - there are some.
star ocean
alan wake
and yes halo wars (I want to see how well the halo franchise spans a second genre and if it'll work as a console rts).

There are also some un-named and unknown titles, I'm looking forward to stoked, and warhound(whatever the release date is). Also I'm pretty sure we'll see a new Weisman game announcement coming soon.

As of right now, I'd have to agree, not much to look out for, but there's always time and place for some large announcements, gdc for example.

3 - So...
The most anticipated titles can be played on the PS3 as the top 5 they listed are multi-platform. I guess it's best to just buy a PS3 to experience the most anticipated 360 games and the huge lineup of 2009 PS3 exclusives.

Glad to see Brutal Legend in the second list but it should have been in the first one too. Also, IMO DarkSiders sounds cool but the gameplay vids and media impressions have been like a mixed bag at best.
