The Xbox 720 to be Released in 2011

Gameplayer presents an analysis of the industry, the console wars and the current economic climate to reveal why the Xbox 720 will launch in 2011. Details inside.

"Having come out of the gates first with the 360, Microsoft are certainly in a position to once again get their next console on store shelves first, but they may also be asking themselves if this is something that they really want to do again."

@ ^^^ Nobody is forcing you to buy an MS console. Why dont you just keep your fanboy goggles on and let the great games pass you buy next gen as well.

On Topic: I dont mind it being moved a little ahead and launch in 2010 but making sure its backward compatible. I've enjoyed new gen gaming from jan 2006 and am craving for Gears 3/4 on a console with 4 gb ram, 2 x Gpu 4x cpus :)

Edit: @vvvv slappingoyseter "I bet you $10 though that Final Fantasy XIII hasn't even hit the Xbox 360 by then though"

I bet 20$ neither would it have hit on Ps3. But at least GT5 and GOW3 should be on its way to counter 720s launch.

Enough with this already it's coming between 2010 - 2012 we know. Until someone comes up with the exact date then stop guessing the years that everyone expects it to come out.

The Wii 2 coming out in 2010 means Nintendo will only leave their console on the market for 4 years. I doubt this unless you only expect the Wii to get an upgrade rather than a full new next gen console (in the Wii 2's case another last gen).

The PS4 in 2012 once again seems a little early as with the other systems.

edit

Since everyone can speculate let me. I think the consoles will last longer none of the consoles (excluding the Wii) have really blown up, and until either the Xbox 360 or PS3 has their "boom" we won't see the new consoles as far as I'm concerned, but Microsoft will launch first again.

Wii 2 - TBA 2012 $249.99
Nintendo will go casual again, and there will be a ratio of 3:1 in favor of casual games over hardcore. Hardware about as powerful as a Xbox 360.

Xbox 720 - TBA 2012 $299.99
I expect Microsoft to spoil Nintendo's and Sony's plans this time by being a bridge between the casual and hardcore audience next generation. When a casual gamer wants to try something more hardcore the Xbox 720 will have that casual same casual appeal with a blend of hardcore titles making it the preferred choice. And when hardcore gamers want something new to try out they'll go to the Xbox 720, because the Wii 2 will be almost completely casual. I expect the Xbox 720 to be similar to the Xbox 360 but major upgrades all around and the red ring will not exist on the new console. 2GB RAM, 200GB HDD on all models, HD-DVD drive or Blu ray drive, maybe Free Xbox Live.

PS4 - TBA 2012-2014 $399.99
This is the hardest one to call. I think Sony will go future proof again (I hope so), but if it does it will launch a lot later to get a better understanding of their hardware this time. However, if they go with multiple Cells then it may launch in 2012 with the others. Sony will be the place for hardcore gamers, and they will put in an effort at scooping up plenty of casual gamers along the way. I have 2 specs. for Sony's PS4 the ones in parenthesis are for the future proof model. 2GB RAM (4GB), 250 GB HDD (500GB), whatever the new drive slot is, free PSN (I Xbox Live isn't free Sony will charge this time).

I know I complained about them speculating, but my speculation is more than just a release date so there.

2010.

New xbox should be a fixed, single model console with a hefty, user replaceable with one of their choice, hard drive. (no arcade, pro, elite scheme)

And should also be bundled into a spacial version of Windows, set to install and run on OEM specially built PCs (specific/limited hardware set and their subsequent iterations).

Normally, I would say that Sony and MS will try and up each other. Especially when Sony saw how MS pulled ahead due to the extra year. However, Sony's situation doesn't allow them to introduce a new system due to the non-existant profit margin on their console even years out. Why? Because, by the time Sony drops their price competitively, MS will lower it again.

Finally, MS will be forced to introduce a new console to counter Sony's better value machine. This of course assumes that PS3 will continue to have plenty of great games coming out (and not just the first party exclusives).

So, next Xbox is really dependent on Sony's success this generation. Sony will not release a new console for a long time as they need to recoup the cost of the current PS3.

PS3, being future proof and all, has a much larger product life cycle (10 Years) than traditional consoles.

Don't expect any hardware upgrades from Sony any time soon. The whole concept of "future proof" was to introduce longevity, and make it capable of competing against high quality titles that you'll see on the next MS console.

Expect the PS3 to go head-to-head for the first year or two of the the "next gen" console. At that point developers will be well versed at creating PS games and will most likely be the lead platform to develop for, as 360 will be long obsolete by then and PS3 will have a massive install base, slightly edging the 360 from global sales

this generation is still relatively young and Sony and MS will probably try to keep both there consoles as viable as long as possible to try and recoup loses they are taking....

but 2011 seems about right when the next generation will begin...

orakga - 356 days 22 hours ago
8.2 - Actually,
2010 would actually be a really good move by MS, as long as they keep a $399 pricepoint for their new console, and it is able to support native 1080p games out of the box (Gears 3 at 1080p!!).

You see, the problem with the 360 is that, after 2009, the roadmap quickly thins out and there are very few notable exclusives to talk about from 2010 and out. So, unless they introduce their next system in 2010, they'll leave the PS3 to "dominate" from 2010 and until they do bring out the next machine.

My 360 has already taken care of me with superb titles. I'm more than satisfied. Bring on the next one. As long as it's a huge upgrade. I don't want to see an upgrade like the Gamecube to Wii.

As long as Microsoft doesn't rush it to release before Sony again the next Xbox has a very solid chance of being one of the biggest systems for westerners.

I highly doubt their next console is going to have any problems. I'm sure they're well aware of RROD and to be extra careful this time around. I personally can't wait for the next Xbox.

Really in the grand scheme of things your opinion does not matter, the Wii will continue to sell as a next-gen console whether you want it to succeed or not :).

11.8 - at above:
"Really in the grand scheme of things your opinion does not matter, the Wii will continue to sell as a next-gen console whether you want it to succeed or not :)."

Next-gen means the NEXT generation, which, by definition, is not out yet. As soon as a product is out the door it is not next anymore but current.
The Wii, is current gen. As in, currently in production/supported.

Lawsuit.

And Microsoft had to deal with that too...except they purchased a 10% stake in the company that sued them. Sony was a bit braver, and got some nice tech in the end.

Sixaxis motion controls + Improved Rumble. =D

And CGI trailers they calim are ingame, and of course the usual lies about hardware. "The PS4 has a new incredible graphics processor that can simulate the birth of life in real-time" etc.

Whenever Sony reps use the word "real-time" you know they are lying.
