1 - Well I am a bit surprised
I guess Sony's result isn't such a shock, but how important exclusives are to the ultimate sales figures was very interesting. It would seem that take out the fanboys and hardcore and the majority of consumers don't care about what software they can or cannot play

While I understand the argument that this article is trying to make, I think that the answer is a little more simplistic than what they are making it out to be.

I think, in general, the console that comes out first needs less reliance on exclusives. The reason for this is that the console released second (or third) needs to give people (esp the gamers that have already bought a console) the reason to buy the newer console, even though it's usually more expensive, with less game support.

*i hope some of that rambling actually made sense*

360: "Of the 88 console exclusives, 26 can be found on other formats (like PC)"

PS3: "Of the 41 console exclusives, zero can be found on other formats (like PC)"

And i bet my ass that of those 8 best next generation franchises that the 360 hason the top 50, like 6 of them are on PC.

Conclusion: PS3 exclusives > 360 exclusives

Yeah, that's pretty much true. Not only that, they are not all shooters. It's sad that Microsoft has to steal exclusives from SONY to survive.

1.7 - This article is retarded
This article is extremely biased and focused on the author's version of "factual finding". Did you guys notice how the author "conveniently" added the Wii's stats at the end? What did it show? After all his arguments about how consoles aren't "really" dependent on exclusives we see 88 million out 101 million purchased games for the Wii were... EXCLUSIVE. What does that say? When 2 out 3 console sales #s are based HEAVILY on exclusives, the conclusion isn't "multiplats are all that are needed" Look at the Wii's #s, they even more lopsided than the Ps3s.
It also demonstrates that anyone can skew stastistics even this author's lame attempt at it.

PS3 > 360 in Excuses

"With only 10% and 22% of the full roster of exclusives for the Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively actually contributing notable sales, it would seem like the majority of consumers are investing a lot more in multi-format games. Or to answer the question directly, it would seem that exclusives aren’t truly as important as they’re made out to be."

4 - Good article by Gameplayer
Just a little bit of rambling;
I think Microsoft are in a very dangerous position as far as console exclusives go;Their two biggest titles are both action oriented and 1 of the two titles is made by an independent developer.

This simply isn't the case with Sony, for years Sony had only 1 first party blockbuster that could pull in astounding numbers, and that game was Gran Turismo.Towards the end of last-gen they realized that they simply relied on 3rd party games too much, and thus were able to establish a completely new franchise,God of War,as another high quality first party title.Last I checked God Of War II had sold over 3 Million copies,a massive success for a game released on the Ps2 while the Ps3 was out.

This gen,Sony have been able to introduce Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet.Uncharted 1 started off slow in sales, but has managed to cross the 1,000,000 copies sold mark mainly due to extremely positive word of mouth. Now whilst the word on sales isn't final on the cute platformer from Media Molecule, the title has sold in excess of 700,000 copies to date-a success for a game that did not receive a multi-million dollar marketing campaign.

So what do Sony have for this gen that's first party and kicks ass?God of War,Gran Turismo,LittleBigPlanet,Unchar ted,and a lot more. Now here's the kicker:Sony's biggest first party titles of last-gen have yet to have their direct sequels released this gen.Gran Turismo 5 is guaranteed 3 Million sales easily, and whilst God of War III does not look 'mature' as some gamers put it,it still has enough action and high quality gameplay to satisfy the hardcore gaming crowd and thus, will still perform exceptionally well at retail.

I feel I should mention the following simply out of analyzing 2009;IF-And this is a very neutral IF-IF Killzone 2 manages to succeed in both sales and gamer/journalist praise,Microsoft will be in a position that only Halo can get them out of.That is,if Killzone 2 manages to become big enough to the point where it's THE must-play game of 2009,nothing Microsoft release this year apart from Halo ODST will be able to counter Guerrilla Games work.

4.1 - v.inetresting post
It will be interesting to see how Killzone 2 does. While the PS3 would seem to be more exclusive dependent according to these figures we have seen pretty pathetic figures for LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm 2. It could bomb.

I doubt it though

The conduit is a bigger threat to Halo than any FPS right now. Killzone one did bad. Gamers will remember that. And the hype behind the Conduit is insane!!

I might not get The conduit though. I'm more about RPGs, but if it gets good feedback, I'll get it and try it out!

I was about to write the same thing but this guy just did it better than me.

", if you are going to do an article downplaying the weight of exclusives on console sales, why are you leaving out your Wii stastistics as an afterthought? 89 million out 101mill software sales being exclusive titles on the Wii does NOT corroborate your conclusion and instead tells me that EXCLUSIVES are console movers. if you want to downplay the 360s exclusives-less 2009 lineup, that is fine. But don't do just conveniently "add" the Wii's stats as an afterthought... especially not when it completely tells a different story. 22% (PS3) and 88% (Wii) are not numbers to scoff at by any means. These numbers show a 180 from what you concluded. In fact based off your own "analysis" calculation... the conclusion should be MORE exclusives = MORE sales. What's the proof? the case of the Wii being THE console leader with THE most exclusives."

and he is 100% right.

the reason the wii is not taken seriously is its not a real next gen machine, its practically a gamecube with a waggle stick, and yes it does have a few good games on it but 95% of its library is aimed at bored house wives and infants.

thanks for Mario Galaxy but...

wheres my Pilotwings?
wheres my Starfox?
wheres my Zelda? (no not a gamecube port thanks)

8 - You leave out the Wii
because the only games that sell on that system are nintendo games. It is completely different to the market for the 360 and PS3 and has no bearing on this argument.

its still a console you like or not, it is included.
now maybe its targeting a different audiance, but it still have some hardcore games like COD:WaW, and some others. and have some games I'm sure you do want to play as well, like mario and zelda and what so ever.

why leaving it out ?

8.3 - The Wii has to be considered in the discussion
Like Handsome said, it IS a console that PLAYS games. Just because they're games that don't suit your personal tastes doesn't make them any less relevant.

@JRaptor - you most certainly need to add all those 3rd party exclusives. Just because Nintendo's own IPs (sales-wise) dwarf 3rd parties' sales doesn't mean their cumulative gross isn't important to the topic at hand. This spring when 4 exclusive "hardcore" games come out for the Wii - Madworld, Deadly Creatures, HotD: Overkill and the Conduit - should we disregard their totals as well because they didn't perform as well as Mario Kart and Brawl?

BTW, I'd love to see any data regarding XBL/PSN/WiiWare exclusives, percentages and what not. I think if someone could extrapolate the data from each respective network, I believe the numbers would even be more skewed towards exclusives.

because they are talking about the difference between exclusives and multiformat games. Which is relevant only between Ps3 and X360. Even multiformat games that do extend to Wii are generally totally different anyway.

Instead of slapping oysters maybe you should slap your face.

"Which is relevant only between Ps3 and X360"

O really, beause nintnedo doesnt have either multiplat games, or exclusives>>>> ?

Fact is the wii is a HUGE part of this argument. It is selling the most consoles. It has the most exclusives. And then the author says basically that there is no need for exclusives.

Maybe it should of been about how the other 2 need to get more exclusives instead of being a mirror image of each other so they might be able to sell more machines!
