Square Enix and the 360

Play-Mag:

"Square Enix's new infatuation with the 360 is something of a strange phenomenon, in a time when most publishers are looking to avoid potential risks and maximise revenue streams. Despite a contextually healthy 2008 for the 360 in Japan, it still boggles the mind as to why it'd release Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean IV and The Last Remnant exclusively on the 360 (though the latter will supposedly receive a belated PS3 port). The PS3 still has a dependable install base in Japan. I'm not saying that I personally long for any of those titles on the platform, but in an industry that has embraced multi-platform development, Square Enix's approach is seemingly old-fashioned."

We must remember that all devs wear a veil. Most of the time the only thing that determines whether it stays on or comes off is loyalty and/or money, and that there my friend is separated by a very thin line

If they're games aren't selling on the system, aren't selling systems, I think they do/should care ICUP.

If you've got a title like WKC which is selling better on the other system, you should really be rethinking who you're supporting.

Edit:

about releasing their games on a last-gen optical drive. As you could see in all the torrent sites, piracy for the last-gen optical drive is very rampant.

1.7 - Jenzo in this case the money symbol justifiably fits
Think about it. Contrary to popular opinion here, JRPGs have always been a niche genre EVERYWHERE outside of Japan. In fact, while I can name ME, Fable2, Oblivion, and Fallout3 as multi-million sellers, not 1 JRPG has sold a million. I understand MS wants a Japanese presence, but in hindsight, it doesn't make much sense to throw money at SE for exclusives. MS doesn't have a handheld, which fair or not, comprises a bulk of SE's earnings in most years. MS's core audience, the Western gamer, isn't interested in JRPGs or their countless re-makes. MS should've spent just enough money to make sure SE became a 3rd party developer, but focused the majority of their financial backing to WRPG devs like Bethesda or Bioware (obviously before Bio was sold to EA). As a 360 fan, do you personally think the MS-SE marriage has bore anything fruitful yet? FF13 is still 2 yrs away for the majority of us.

I agree with you, my point was meant as universal for N4G though, not this thread in particular.

Trying to buy SE is pointless, if anything they should go after Bethesda and still keep securing third party exclusives. Like they've done with SE this holiday. Even if Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery weren't very good the business tactics was clever.

Maybe MS paid for the exclusive maybe not. But that's besides the point, what is strange is who gives a damn what MS buys? Does anybody gripe when Sony or Nintendo buys something? I mean no one complains about Sony buying up studios, would it make everyone happier if MS bought SE?

They were probably hope this would introduce a new group of gamers to their JRPGs and thus get more sales on their multi-plats.

It would probably help if 2 out of the 3 exclusives hadn't flopped.

Those terms are welcome in the open zone but here in the gamer zone we try to adhere to the rules and keep from making derogatory statements... Of course, there are always a few exceptions to the rule but in most cases, the mods will ban you to the open zone if you use the terms too often.

6 - alright... lets clear up some missconceptions.
First of all, microsoft owns the rights and IP of infinite undiscovery, they contracted tri-ace and paid for the development of the game. Square was given the publishing rights, i have no idea why. Feel free to check the list of microsoft owned registered trademarks, you'll see that IU is on that list.

Star ocean is also not made by square, the game is being made by triace so any deals would be through Microsoft and Triace not through square. Square is only a publisher for the game. If anything it's because of a contract developed with square for ff13 to come to the ps3. My guess, microsoft offered square full publishing rights for both IP's in return for an early version of Last Remnant, and ff13.

Finally, companies do not pay to make a game multiplatform, they pay to keep a game exclusive. There is a wide variety of advantages to making a game multi-platform, with a list topped off by larger install base. Please don't think that MS paid for ff13 to go multi, if anything it was Sony who neglected to pay. This goes for all content that we know MS paid for, GTA4 DLC, Fallout DLC, etc. vs what we assumed they paid for DMC, ff13 etc.

Xi, you're a level headed guy... what is your personal opinion on exclusive DLC? I find it to be a disservice to customers and fans. What's your take, if you don't mind answering.

Edit - Specifically, the Fallout 3 and GTA4 story expansions.
Shut this user up Let user speak
Xi - 355 days 1 hour ago
6.2 -
depends, are you talking about free DLC, episodic content, larger updates(like map packs) or something like horse armor?

Well for the fans it shouldn't really matter, you're buying a game like GTA or Fallout 3 for the story being told in the game, not via the DLC which may come later. Not only this many 'true' fans of the game have likely purchased the version they think will do the game the most justice. Most developers take that into consideration when developing the DLC, they know there is always the opportunity that the may alienate fans by producing exclusive content for one version over another, often why DLC is sub-par compared to the title. The only way i see it as a disservice to the fans if they're purposely holding back content that would have otherwise been released in the full game.

On a personal level, I think it's a double edged sword, I don't know any of the numbers that show the popularity of DLC, or how often people purchase it, but I have a rough estimation of how often people complete a game. And it's shockingly low, so I don't know how DLC will be able to produce those who've already "given up" on the game more incentive to play it again. Also on one side you have the opportunity for the developer to make easy money, no need for a new engine, most assets already in existence, but that's only if it sells, otherwise you're in a money sink.

As for what MS has done, well, that's business, you make deals and hope for the best. I think in the end it's helped Microsoft, GTA used to be predominantly a "sony" game (even though it was on both xbox and PC) but because microsoft made the effort it's now multiplatform, people only now widely acknowledge that.

tri-Ace may be the developers of the Star Ocean series, but Star Ocean is a Square Enix property. Star Ocean was one of Enix's series before they merged with Square. Same with Dragon Quest. All of tri-Ace's games were published by Square Enix. It's nothing new.

If Square Enix wants Star Ocean to go anywhere else, it will. It's their property.

Actually it's always been made by Tri-ace and published by Enix, as far as I know tri-ace is the owner of all rights related to the franchise.

Yeah, I had to change that, it's a bit misleading. But I've never seen the franchise change hands (DQ has) so I only assume that tri-ace still owns the rights to the IP, and they have some contract with sqaure for publishing rights, considering every game they've ever made has been published by square (including IU which is owned by MS).

However, what I DO find amusing is Square going on and on about multiplatform being their future, and the reason for FFXIII to the 360... then they go and clam up the MOMENT someone asks them in the same interview about Star Ocean on the PS3.

I'm really liking Level 5 and their work. Dark Cloud, Dragon Quest 8, etc. Didn't play rogue galaxy but heard good things about it. I look forward to White Knight Chronicles just as much as FF13 and FF13 versus. And on a side note I want to urge all PS3 owners who are rpg fans to go pick up Valkryia Chronicles and support this game. I just bought it today and it is absolutely awesome. I just don't understand the lackluster sales. Why in the world do PS3 owners complain about not having any good rpgs and then when an incredibly original, stellar, award-winning rpg title comes out they don't bother with it? Go buy Valkryia Chronicles.....PSN ID: Frodo25

8.2 - @yojoe26. I have a theory
A lot of PS3 owners did get the Valkyria Chronicles, but it is not enough to make a dent in games sold compared to other PS3 games. There were a lot of great PS3 games out almost a few weeks apart. Most PS3 owners are not filthy rich and take into account the recession. Some PS3 owners might only be able to afford 1 game per month, and they might want a shooter more than a rpg, so they buy R2 instead of VC. But we'll see, a great game have tendency to sell well over a period of time.

Level5 has that certain magic in their games that Sega was known for. It's the look, story and overall gameplay that meshes into a very pleasing experience. As for Sega, they have recaptured that magic they once had with Valkyria Chronicles. VC is a game that belongs along side Sega's pantheon of great titles. Reminds me of playing an old school Sega classic with updated gameplay mechanics and gfx. Hope they can keep it up.

Pretty obvious:
Sony doesn't have money. Bad financial situation.

FF13Versus is cheaper to secure (smaller-scale game).
FF13 was not affordable by Sony... so it went with the cheap one.

This way, Sony Fanboys can continue dreaming about something.
Good move Sony! Cheap, good and efficient!

Seriously. What? Sony don't pay for exclusives and have stated as such. It's something many people have considered a weakness in the past considering how little problem Microsoft has shown doing the same. Now, Sony are really starting to show off their first-party developers and thus aren't being looked down upon so much.

However Microsoft convinced S-E to give up exclusivity for XIII (many people assume money), they obviously couldn't get them to do the same for Versus. Or, they figured the 'main' game was worth a lot more to them than what they probably consider a spinoff. It also didn't hurt that the leading developer really wants to show off what he can do with the PS3.

Edit: Versus, smaller scale game? It's obvious XIII will stand out more to anyone that hasn't heard about or done any research on the games but both are clearly on the same scale.

If claims of Sony having 'financial problems' are alluding to the downturn in the economy then Microsoft is going through the same thing. If not then you're delluding yourself.

From what we know, it's the Nomura's team that absolutely didn't want to make FF Versus XIII a multiplatform. Just like Kojima with Metal Gear Solid 4, Square Enix may have put big pressure on FFvXIII's team but they did not capitulate.

However, unless someone make a true interview without wooden language, some part of this business will never be known, everything will be speculations.

I dont think sony has paid for any exclusive other then MGS4 i think, sony has the best first and second party support in the industry, this is were sony's strategy is different from MS, MS pays for Exclusive DLC, or time exclusive while sony puts their money into its first and second party.

i think that MS should put more money into its first and second party support and Sony should just improve its relation with third party's

It is really funny to think about. SE games dominate in Japan Only and sell ok outside of it. So why does MS want FFXIII outside Japan when the sales won't be nearly as good. If Sony does do a price drop soon the point of getting this game on the 360 will be even worse since RPG gamers are normally on online communities and we know the things going on. This would be a smart move by MS if they didn't invest so much into to shooters and get know as a FPS system. I hope it comes out around the same time as Halo:Recon so it tanks more cause 360 Fanboys love some Halo lol.

http://www.gamespot.com/new...

let's go back....back before ps3 launch.this is september 2006....BEFORE PS3 LAUNCH.

square decides instead of sony running over the competition like last time, they will help the losers stay even with sony all the way through next gen.

so what do they do?

they decide to support the 360 with a crutch, putting jrgs on 360 in japan to keep the console alive.without support, the 360 would have never even have sold 500,000 consoles in japan.where are the fans of square jrpgs?

on playstation platforms.where are the putting their games?NOT ON PLAYSTATION PLATFORMS.

do you see any square products on PSN?NOPE

do you see and jrpgs on ps3?NOPE

do you see any release dates for jrpgs on ps3?NOPE

did square decide to postpone the american ps3 version of xiii until they make a 360 version to release along side it?YES

why?so that sony does not run over the competition.capcom has done it.namco has done it.and other companies.but are 360 gamers buying these jrpgs like the halo series or gears series or call of duty series?

NO!NO!NO!

could square have made money on ps3 with rpgs?YES

but hey, what do I know.i guess it makes sense to give games to other gamers other than the fans.other than what system they are using.

MAKES SENSE TO ME.........NOT......

you must can't read or english is not your first language.

I SAID

***the 360 would have never even have sold 500,000 consoles in japan.***

i did not say 360 sold ***ONLY*** 500,000 systems.

i am well aware that 360 is over 500,000.but sales of 360 rpgs are abysmal.

did lost sell over 5 million copies?no
did tales sell over 5 million copies?no
did blue dragon sell over 5 million copies?no

did any 360 rpg sell over 5 million copies?no

so what i'm saying is that, even if square is targeting the western market with rpgs, and in their own backyard for 360,sales of those games are not going anywhere.

360 has more consoles sold than ps3 in america.but sales of jrpgs for 360 are a joke compared to shooters.so their thinking that 360 gamers are going to buy their rpgs like shooters are just dellusions.foolishness i say.

even with the guy(sakaguchi) who made FF a household name, his rpgs don't sell on 360.just because 360 has more consoles doesn't mean that the fans have the console and are waiting for their games.the sales tell me otherwise.even the psp ff:crisis core sold more than 360 rpgs.

TAKE THAT TO THE BANK.

"you must can't read or english is not your first language" and that was about where I quit reading.

Did you ever think that maybe JRPG's aren't selling anymore because no one likes them anymore? Japan isn't near the largest market and the only reason they ever sold is because markets like the US and Europe bought those games. As mentioned before games like Fable 2, Oblivion, and Fallout 3 have taken over the American market.

Don't try to feed me bullshit about how SE is making games for the 360 because it feels sorry for Microsoft, they are doing it because they can market to more people! Who cares how many consoles are in Japan, SE looks at the world market which by the way has more 360's in it than PS3's so they are going to try to latch onto that and make money off of it. Opposite of last gen where the PS2 was king so SE had no problem sitting on that console.
