More Xbox 360 JRPG love: Magna Carta sequel inbound

Ars writes: "For a system unable to capture a significant marketshare in Japan and known mostly for its shooters, the Xbox 360 is the console to get for Western-localized Japanese RPGs. Microsoft's box has played host to just about every noteworthy JRPG this generation thus far, and it looks like yet another JRPG of old will find a new home on the system: Softmax has announced that a new Magna Carta game is coming to the Xbox 360.

Avid JRPG fans will remember the Atlus-published Magna Carta: Tears of Blood as a decent, visually-striking PS2 JRPG with a mostly-female cast and a strong strategic bent. The new Xbox 360 title, called Magna Carta: Crimson Stigma, is its sequel currently in development. Aside from that, though, little else is known: pricing information, potential release date, and any game play details have not yet been disclosed."

I dont think its a remake its a actual sequel to the game. But I dont think this game will do good. I bought the first one and spent about 35hours on it and the ONLY thing good about it was the gameplay/graphics. Story was really "meh" for me, the voice acting was really terrible, and what I hated the most is I play a cross-dressing guy(that REALLY looks like a girl) that kina whins... If any of those changes I might wanna buy the sequel, but chances are slim.

this game could be a sleeper hit IMO if the devs pulled the game off right. I've seen what Japanese,American & even UK devs could do with RPGs. I'm intrested to see what a Korean dev can do with a RPG.

Of Korean developed games, I'm a big fan of the Kingdom Under Fire series.

I hope this Magna Carta will be great. Tears of Blood was pretty good, but the battle system put me off at times.

The only good things that game had was the battle system and graphics and you say that you didn't like that aspect Tony P... Do you really played the game?

I still remember the first time I saw The box art of Tears of Blood and thought that the protagonist was a girl. lol

OMG lesbians! http://www.meristation.com/...

And the antagonist is such a rip-off of Edea from FFVIII...

I played 35hours of this game and I thought the ONLY thing good about it was the gameplay/graphics... Story was soooo boring and clithe and the voice acting was sooo bad I had to mute the game(sry I really HATE bad voice acting). I might get this game though if it shows some promise, but so far I only see 2 screens...

3 - So
I get a 360 specifically for it's western RPG's and now the 360's pretty much the 'JRPG Platform'.

Not that I want to deny the JRPG-lovers their games, but I'd like to see MS bring some more WRPG's (sci-fi) to the 360. Kind of feeling left out here.

That said, I don't think the PS3 even has one exclusive WRPG, so it's not like I bought the 'wrong' platform. Just not the right one either, as there isn't one. :(

first off this isn't a Japanese game. Its Korean like many people have already said. Don't be fooled by the fantastic artwork, the first one was horrible. I love eastern rpgs, my favorite type of game in fact and this game was one of the worst ones on the ps2. The women looked hot yes, but the men looked like women. The main charater had his butt hanging out. The battle system was just as bad and some of the worst voice acting and slowest story ever for an eastern rpg. Forget this and look forward to star ocean 4 instead.

Magna Carta 2 (I never played it) scored highly in reviews for this sort of game and I do love my RPG's so will keep an eye on this. 2009 looks like the year of the JRPG KRPG ERPG WRPG whatever you want to call it/it is. I love having both consoles all these RPG's announced fantastic.

The first MC sucked so bad!! (If you don't believe me check the reviews) I can't even believe right now they're making another one. I wouldn't be to proud of having the sequel on my console. I rented it from Gamefly and took it back the same day I got it. I'm a huge JRPG fan but this game is just the worst. Keep your expectations of this game really low, good people. That way, WHEN it flops, you won't feel so bad.

is developers scared of the ps3? because the install base is there now...there is no reason 360 should be getting anymore exclusive rpgs....and one like magna carta? like a B grade franchise is kinda weird especially after how all the other rpgs on the platform came out....i just dont understand...

11 - I've always loved the art style of these characters, I'm not sure why?
I have all the HI quality wallpapers on my desktop...

This series deserve more love though, often gets lost in that final fantasy shuffle..like Suikoden(another good franchise)

The first game was awful , it tried to mix many ideas from many great ps2/psx j rpg but ended up with a bloated and unplayable gameplay .
I wad really dissapointed since i pinned down so much back in the day of its korean PC release for a translation .

The game is still beautiful and story can be decent , but thats it .
Who the hell decided to make a "jrpg" (yeah i know its korean but we knows wich styles it borrows from ) with a real time combat where only the currently selected character move and do something , the others being statics and without IA , while you got to hit buttons at the proper time , like in shadow hearts ... while also dealing with the area elements , and switching them for positive and good effects (kinda like Chrono Cross zone colors system wich was already a chore) .

It's probably the only game of the genre where YOU NEED to listen to the tutorial carefully , with so much difficulty artificially built in , and so many gameplay component to manage and mismatched with each others . Like again why the hell make a real time based game with a team of characers if no AI or multiplayer ?

I dont mind hard and difficult rpg games , hell i love Nocturne , Breath of Fire dragon Quarter , hell i could even live through the mess that was already Hoshigami , but Magna is 80 % difficult because of a crappy gameplay design , and the remaining because of weird balancing . It's shiny graphics aged far too much to suffer such a mediocre game .

Hence you'll understand if i'm not feeling at all giddy about a sequel , unless shockingly the game got nothing to do with the first , besides the excellent art , i'll skip it , get the artbook , and watch the most likely stunning cutscenes in streaming .

*WRONG!*

Damn thing had a cast of all female-looking characters.

In fact the only way to tell females from males in the game was that some characters had boobs! Big boobs!!

I mean anything that was female had a "D" cup.

17 - *AHEM*... Well if the developers were smart, they'd go multi-platform with this release, that way they'd make more of a profit... yeah, I think that's how it goes...
... so how bout it? or will 360 supporters show themselves to be the hypocrites we already know they are?

multi-platform game making is not that simple as "hey lets go multi-platform with this game". A lot of this people on this website forget that going multi-platform takes money & even if game devs want to make a game on all platforms you have to remember gaming is a business first.

1) for devs to go multi-platform they have to have the money first! that why some devs keep their games on one platform sometimes. Also if the devs see's that the dev cost of a game outweights the money made of the game that can turn a dev off of making a multi-platform games. Also, we don't even know who the publisher of the game is. I'm pretty sure softmax doesn't have the kinda money it needs to make a game multi-platform. That not to say it won't go multi-platform, it all depends on the publisher. If it's some like EA or capcom then I pretty sure the game is coming to the PS3, if its some like MGS (Microsoft Game Studios) or Atlus the game staying a 360 only game! However for some reason if I were a betting man I say this game is a 360 only title based on all the things going on right now!

17.2 - Just do me a favor...
... remember this the next time someone starts running their trap about the next PS3 exclusive that needs to go multi-platform...

and I seriously doubt that it was a matter of not having money... lessee... Japan, RPG heavy market... Doesn't take a genius to figure it out... I'm willing to bet that they got PLENTY of money for it.

One other thing... does this so called "level-headed" explanation count for all exclusives, or just 360 ones? And if the Atlus comment were true, you'd be playing Disgaea 3, wouldn't you?

Yeah, I'm sure it came down to money, but not in the rosey-red way you expect us to think...

17.3 - @Enigma_2099....................
yeah I guess you could say this "level-headed" explanation count for all exclusives. However sometimes this rule doesn't always work in the PS3's favor for the sample fact MS is willing to pay money for their exclusives & for games to go multi-platform this round. Also what do ya mean by "And if the Atlus comment were true, you'd be playing Disgaea 3, wouldn't you? " When I talk about Atlus not talking games multi-platform it because they don't have the money to do so without a another company paying the bill! That why they & NIS america show their games at AX & not E3! They just don't have the money!"Yeah, I'm sure it came down to money, but not in the rosey-red way you expect us to think". Of course the dev money isn't all clearn & fair, that's just the way business works. I was just telling you the basic's of this!

17.4 - Nice to know that devs are still flocking to the 360 because it's the better system... wait, no they're not... it's just because Microsoft threw money at them... as always.
... but of course no one will come out and say that... they'll say just what you're saying... that Sony should follow suit.

And what do I mean about the Atlus comment? Only that this...

"if its some like MGS (Microsoft Game Studios) or Atlus the game staying a 360 only game!"

Might not be as true as you claim... Disgaea 3 was a PS3 exclusive... I don't think Microsoft bought them out yet.

"Of course the dev money isn't all clearn & fair, that's just the way business works. I was just telling you the basic's of this!"

Well, thank god for honesty... however misguided...
