Personally, I had a tough time choosing my Game of the Year. It was between Metal Gear Solid 4, and Little Big Planet. While they both have excellent gameplay, the production values, and story of Metal Gear Solid 4 placed it slightly ahead of Little Big Planet in my opinion.

If it's half as good as Oblivion, chances are, I'll spend a large part of 2009 playing it.

It is impossible not to be catching up after this year. There were so many good games.

Agreed, and I would place Fallout 3 near the top of my list for GotY. Even though I am only 12 hours into it, which translates to maybe 4 hours of story... Darn you compulsion to explore everything not related to the story. Anywho, it would be a close race between Fable 2, Fallout 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, and LittleBigPlanet for GotY in my book.

The 360's 2008 lineup was even better than its stellar 2007. It will be hard to imagine how they can top this in 2009.

Hopefully with some new, unique titles. I want to see stuff I've never seen before.

The Xbox 360 had a pretty good year, but I have to give the Playstation 3 the "console of the year" award. lol

I look forward to more innovative games like Mirrors Edge, and Little Big Planet, but there is nothing wrong with a game that's been done before, but with better production values. (Example: Gears of War 2, Resistance 2, Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc)

I bought Oblivion recently, and I saw the Game of the year edition shortly after, if I bought that, would it read my old Oblivion game data? Much appreciated if you can help.

on topic:

It's a close call for me between MGS4 and Fallout 3, just thinking about it makes me sweat....*whew*

"As for gaming in 2008, it wasn’t a bright year for unique and new titles."

REALLY? Mirror's Edge, L4D, LittleBigPlanet, Braid, PixelJunk Eden, Professor Layton, Audiosurf...All took chances and were very innovative.

that's just the tip of the iceberg, should I continue?

Sorry, but here's one man's opinion:

Mirror's Edge: good concept but not a great game.

Left 4 Dead: great MP, sorely lacks in SP. They only made half a game.

The article gave props to LBP.

Braid is an arcade game, and arcade games were excluded from the article.

As for the others, never heard of them...

It's a shame the article excluded downloadable titles. Some of this year's shining examples of innovation, and just pure fun, were on XBL and PSN.

PixelJunk Eden, The Last Guy, Everyday shooter, Castle Crashers, Braid, Geometry Wars 2, the list goes on and on. MEGA MAN 9 for crying out loud!

Just one man's critical opinion...

Your taking this pretty seriously. I'll back off so as to not give you a coronary. How about this, we get a beer, and start gaming. It's the Holidays!!

Just to clarify, I understand why TGR wouldn't post downloadable titles...not part of the business model.

I'm just stating my case.

I didn't even consider Grand Theft Auto 4 for my Game of the Year. I'm not one of those people that say "Oh, GTA 4 sucked," but it certainly wasn't the best game of the year.

It started of very promising, but started to lose it's immersion by the %30-%40 mark. With the excessive phone calls, and not a lot to do outside of the story missions, I just couldn't understand the perfect scores.

Obviously, it was a technical achievement. The city was huge, looked excellent, and had a lot going on, but regardless of how impressive it was, it wasn't as fun, or as engaging as games like Metal Gear Solid 4, or Little Big Planet in my opinion.
