EA Claims First Xbox 360 1080p Game Crown

Following yesterday's news that Sega's March 20 release of Virtua Tennis 3 would herald the first Xbox 360 game to feature native 1080p support, a representative from Electronic Arts has revealed to Gamasutra that its upcoming NBA Street Homecourt, shipping a month earlier on February 20, will also support the high end resolution on Xbox 360.

While Microsoft first announced support for native 1080p games and movies in its October 2006 Xbox Live update, it heralded a number of titles competing to be the first to offer the highest-end HD resolution, and it appears that EA's title will indeed beat Sega's to retail with the hitherto not well-publicized resolution included.

HDMI has nothing to do with you seeing 1080p...how many times does this need to be explained.

it is for movies only...and it is for the copy right protection that will come into effect somewhere around 2010 or 2012. at that point you will need HDMI to see it though...but not until then.

HDMI will never effect games. because hollywood is not going to put copy protection on games and things they are not a part of.

I bought the 50" Sony sxrd rear projection tv and it will only display 1080p through the hdmi input. That's why I'm one of the few 360 fans waiting for an hdmi cable.

HDMI is not needed for 1080p. Component can do games in 1080p, or VGA can do games and also video in 1080p. HDMI is something that has copy protection which is nice for the industry, but it's delayed untill 2010 or 2012 or so.

Furthermore, HDMI will only be usefull with very, very large screens. The average 26,32 or 42 inch you won't notice and won't need HDMI period.

I am not saying 720p is visually better then 1080p. Ofcourse it's not. THe last one the resolution is higher. I am saying that 720p is the sweet spot this gen.

Easy games like tennis with 2 moving characters can do 1080p. Demanding games will have a hard time, getting that out, either on PS3 or 360.

Plus, people own 720p TV's native. 1080p native won't be for the masses even within years.

So don't make up stuff that I don't say. Learn to read

-ALL Xbox 360 games can be upscaled to full 1080p.
-There is one native 1080p game for PS3- NBA 2k7. Which sucks. (did I miss any?)

Xbox 360, >200 (including backwards compatible titles, etc)
PS3, ~1

And any TV that can do 1080p almost certainly has component input, while very few have HDMI. And lots of those TVs probably have VGA too, for that matter. So arguing that HDMI = 1080p is totally baseless.

Sony launched 17 November in Japan and USA. You should know that too.
So about 17 to 18 days before the PS3 was here, the 360 had native 1080p output.

maybe you guys can make more out of this...but i found what appears to be a fee and royalty payment to any company that uses HDMI...could this be ONE of the reasons M$ did not use it...they have deep pockets and this would be pocket change but who knows...of course we know they were sticking with 720p at first so...

Annual Fee

Royalty
HDMI is available for a reasonable royalty rate as follows:

If the Adopter reasonably uses the HDMI logo on the product and promotional materials, then the rate drops to five cents (US$0.05) per unit sold.
If the Adopter implements HDCP content protection as set forth in the HDMI Specification, then the royalty rate is further reduced by one cent (US $.01) per unit sold, for a lowest rate of four cents (.04) per unit. Adopters must license HDCP separately from Digital Content Protection, LLC, an Intel subsidiary. Please see www.digital-cp.com for details.
Products Subject to Royalty
The HDMI royalty is only payable on Licensed Products that will be sold on a stand-alone basis (i.e. that are not incorporated into another Licensed Product that is subject to an HDMI royalty). For example, if a cable or IC is sold to an Adopter who then includes it in a television subject to a royalty, then the cable or IC maker would not pay a royalty, and the Adopter television manufacturer would pay the royalty on the final product. If the cable is sold directly to consumers, then it would be subject to a royalty.

10.1 - Both.

The 360 has a built-in scaler that will upscale to the best resolution your TV offers. You can chose the display setting on your 360 dashboard. Games are still programmed in a native resolution, mostly 720p, but the 360 will upscale to 1080p if your TV offers it.

Unfortunately, the PS3 either lacks a scaler or, for some reason, it hasn't been implemented yet. Either way, the PS3 doesn't upscale, it downscales.

As for these ridiculus comments about 1080p only being outputed through HDMI, that's just people falling for Sony hype. 1080p can be outputed through component, VGA cable, or HDMI. Nearly every decent HDTV has all three. Some have 2 HDMI, 1 component, and 1 VGA while some have 1 HDMI, 2 component, and 1 VGA, or really any combination depending on how new or expensive the HDTV is. Some may not have VGA, but almost all of the good ones do.

The only thing about HDMI is that it's the only cable with the new copy protection for HD-DVD/Bluray. This may or may not be implemented. If it is, it won't be until 2010-12. This copy protection has absolutely nothing to do with video games, at all, whatsoever.

that except for the convenience of the HDMI connector for some, it is not needed...despite what some marketing might have you believe. By the time the hardware token is enforced MS will have their next version of Xbox out which will include HDMI (newer than v1.3) along with a dual format HD drive. I for one would much rather pay $300-$400 dollars every 5 years than $600-$800 every 10. So for all those who claim to keep/enjoy their console for 10 years more power to you. Technology moves much to fast to sit on a console for that long.

all you XBOX360 fan boys need to stop blowing Bill Gates, after all this is the man who came out and said Windows Vista is all about the security, "It should be fun". Do remember that Bill Gates is the one who piggy-back the idea of microsoft off of steve jobs and then when Apple started to fail, bought them out so that he wouldn't get sued, though his buy out was more in the form of a loan to them. When are you going to realize that these two companies are good no matter what, you need to give a chance to the other side even if you are scared. Hate to say this but if XBOX does do a revision and come out with another system like in the other post, Sony will have been right again. Xbox will just be adapting to try and stay in the game.

12 - Actually a fair assessment can't be said yet as the HDMI standard isn't really used yet

But for games, component cable should be fine. Supposedly the PS3 does have Deep Color and HDMI does support higher refresh rates than 60hz such as the upcoming 120hz HDTVs this year(2007).

Right now it doesn't make sense for Games or HD movies to support any of the higher bit colors on the PS3 right now (HDMI 1.3 supports 30, 36, 48 bit color in both RGB or YCbCr as well as the next gen color space xvYCC which is 1.8 times more colors than HDMI 1.2). While the PS3 can support high refresh rates HDTVs don't support them yet - but they are coming at 120hz.

There is a big difference between a HDTV set running at 120hz verses 60hz sort of like the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps. Its super fluid - almost too smooth.

If CES is any indication of what Manufactures are going for, 120hz will be defacto standard for HDTVs in 2007 and beyond for awhile. It makes sense to make HDTVs support 120hz since it can natively display 60 fps, 30 fps, and 24 fps without any pull down. where as 60hz you would need to convert 24 fps to 30 fps for compatibiliy.

This is all fine and dandy for 24 fps (which believe it or not is most of Hollywood - especially Independent films) movies but what about games which run at 30 or 60 fps?

Not really that important at least for now because Game Developers can build their software around native support which is as of right now max 1080p 60hz component or HDMI for HDTV sets. 1080p games at 60hz should be fine. However, once HMDI 1.3 becomes common place it is possible for Developers to access the Higher color Depth for 720p or 1080p and that is a noticeable change that could affect the xbox 360 in its present hardware configuration (who knows maybe by then we will see that mysterious HDMI Xbox 360).

Oh! and you idiots that keep mentioning upscaling. Upscaling is evil for games and it is a cop out that you don't want for games. Native is way better! It's not that great for movies either but it works and still is better than trying to play a game or watch a movie that isn't native HD on a HDTV.

15 - IGN is mistaking...There are several games that are native 1080p already out for the 360

IGN recieves their games from the companies prior to release. They don't get the actual game case. So its understandable why they haven't seen that there are actually 4 games out NOW that are full 1080p. Superman, Lost Planet, Blue Dragon and Sonic. All you have to do is go to your local game store...pick up a copy of one of those games....and read the back of the case. Those 4 in particular clearly state 1080p native. NOT UPSCALE. Why do we keep going in circles with this debate? Its silly and ignorant.

Secondly the guy who said he had a Sony 1080p 50 inch tv....That particular tv does recieve 1080p via hdmi and vga. Just not via componant in regards to "MOVIES"...not games. People use this site to spread mis information and their purpose is...."WHAT"....Get informed people...its not that complicated. And the internal output on the 360 is indeed digital. They just convert it to anolog due to the fact that when the 360 was released back in 2005....less 1% of consumers had tvs with digital inputs. It was a business move.....Now its a about 8%....still very small but big enough now for MS to take note. Thats why they "WILL" release the black 360 with hdmi built in and a bigger hard drive. But they will also drop the price in the current 360 and most likely make the 20 gig hard drive the standard at 299 doing away with the core. They will release hdmi adapters for the current 360 and they will release the 120 gig drive seperate for 119.99. So essentially the 10 million early adopters will be able to "FULLY" upgrade to the "NEW" version. They are making the new version to crush the life out of the ps3's second launch to the rest of the world. Its pure genious on MS's part. And I haven't been wrong yet. I have done lots of research and use the gift of common sense always. Get ready folks....Its exciting to be a gamer right now. And PEOPLE....the 360 already has 1080p native games. Ign is mistaken...its not the first time they got it wrong in regards to their info....Do I need to post the pictures once again? ha ha ah ha ah...Sony fans are in complete denial and its become sad. Get over it. And once again...the 360 outputs 1080p to every hd tv on the market for movies and games via hdmi and vga. Sony's tvs all have vga...as do the other name brands....also...via componant they can display 1080p for games only on some tvs....and many others do movies via componant as well....at least untill about 2012. Let the Truth prevail.
