Microsoft announces first DLC for Fable II

Microsoft announced today that Starting Dec. 12, 2008, fans will be summoned back into Albion's service with the release of the Knothole Island downloadable content pack. The remote island of Knothole is dying: its golden sands and lush vegetation are covered with snow, its people freezing, its treasures buried. Only a hero can face the trials of the three shrines to bring back the sunshine.

1.1 - 800ms?
What's that worth dollar wise?

EDIT: @ 1.2 - Thanks
Canadian here so what, 15 bucks or so I'm guessing.
Not bad if it is indeed 4 or 5 hours of play.

So soon? Why couldn't this have been on the disc? More nickel-and-diming it seems.

This is absolute Bullsh*t. I'm sick of developers making their DLC alongside the game, and then releasing it later when it should have been on the f**king disc in the first place.

LBP is also guilty of this. As much as I love the game, I gritted my teeth when I layed down my $3 for the extra costumes.

I'm part of the problem... I hate myself now. :(

My one saving grace is that I haven't bought an EA game in over 5 years.

I just hate DLC in general. Seems like every company today is following the Korean MMO business model.

i love extra content via dlc but NOT 2 months after release,i can assure you that 80% of this dlc was allready done when the game went gold

i mean dont get me wrong im goign to get me fable2 + dlc as allways :D i love fable. but that feels a tad to milking.

1.5 - Why not 2 months after release?
Maybe, it could have been put on the disc, maybe it was complete. Maybe we should all wait till we know more, before we go off the hilt.

Looking at the dev diary for Lionhead it is clear they were on crunch time since early 2008.

I have no doubt this was the plan all along, but it does seem to be a tangential story arc. Which would fit well into the Fable II universe. Personally I'm hoping for more beyond this expansion.

I might be pissed, if Fable II was short, or incomplete, but after playing the game for 40+ hours (still not done), and thoroughly enjoying every minute. I cannot say that I did not get my money's worth.

I understand where you coming from about nickel and diming but I think they are doing this more to prevent people from just renting games or wanting to sell their games after they complete it to Gamestop. By adding DLC it ensures the customers will want to hold on to their purchase and will be eligible to get more from their purchase through DLC.

I see this happening with many games in the future.

It's like Halo3.... you know how Bungie keeps supporting the game by releasing new maps during the year.... so most likely you won't be selling that game because you might be coming back to it in the future to play the new maps

1.7 - Crazy
Even if they had put this on the disk initially, people are never satisfied. Once they did do some DLC, there would be people whining that even that should have been on the disk. I guess the good part of this for people like vitz3 is that you don't have to buy it.

DLC this close to the release date should have been included in the retail game.

IMO Fable 2 sucked and paying more to make it suck slightly less is not worth it.

Maybe if it had been a game like Mirror's Edge, but Fable 2 was packed with more content than most other games released this year. Except for Fallout 3 perhaps.

I agree that DLC tends to be a rip off, but it will be released almost 2 months after the game release, and consider that the game is considered "complete" long before it's sold (testing and all that).

It's a reasonable amount of time imo, long enough for people to have finished the game, but not so long that the game becomes "obsolete" *cough*GTA4*cough*.

Whether it will be worth 800 space bucks or not really remains to be seen.

From the description, this sounds a lot like a reworked "Lost Chapters".

But hey, I'd rather have the option of paying 800ms points than having to buy the game again.

6 - any pay to play dlc that comes out so soon after a games release is i rippoff imo
that includes bioshock ps3, costumes lbp ps3, EA: take ur frikkin pick (except criterion for burnout) All of them. There are more im sure. If we buy it we are encouraging it end off. I did however like the idea of the gears 1 maps being free after a certain amount of time had elapsed a little more because at least the devs/ms met their customers half way. Just my opinion

@scottmichael

edhe threw up a great point about needed more time just to complete that little bit extra. I totally agree. Although something that comes out a year later like gta dlc may be irrelevant for manyyou at least know they spent time producing it after the game was released. Call me a cynic but I think we are heading in a bad direction with 'some' dlc not all. call of duty map packs was palatable for me but gun packs for dead space. Get the fcuk outta here. Will fable im sure there will be a good amount of play time and a lot of value BUT its almost understandable if the dlc would of pushed the size of the game over dvd<9's capacity. If fable 2 were on ps3 and released dlc so soon id go nowhere near it if they were trying to charge for it. That may be harsh but thats how i feel

@ omega

this is nothing to do with what console you prefer, try to actually read what i said. Im happy for people to be paid for extra work, no doubt but im a little sceptical about its timing. Please take no offence

Whilst i can agree with your sentiment, it's not like a development team sits about slicing out profits for later [for the most part].

There will be plenty of nearly-fully-fleshed-out concepts that just require a few hundred more man-hours (a week's work from a team) that can come out.

Frankly i think most fable2 players will welcome the extra concent, having already exhaustively played it for 30 or 40 hourd, i know my fiance has.

6.3 - Are you kidding me?
I would understand if the game was bare bones or they where charging $5-$10 for a character(Megaman 9 and Soul Calibur 4) but doing this so soon (two months after the game released) is a good thing. It expands on the game and keep player interested in it. If they didn't release it so soon it would be Mass Effects "Bring down the shy" dlc all over again with no one buying it due to everyone moving on from the game.
This in not a bad thing. It will be judged though on it's length.

@Why o why
Sony hasn't put out any dlc like this at all. This has been done from the original Xbox and the gen for Oblivion. You can say "Sony would" with dlc because Sony hasn't. Uncharted would have benefited with dlc.

6.4 - @ 6.2
It seems like the only people who complain about DLC are the people who arent getting it

And those people own something beginning with 'P' and ending in 'laystation 3'

DLC helps boost replay value of the game after its been released. Adding it to the retail game would make the content a lot less significant at least thats what i think

I agree with your general sentiments Why o Why, but its a fine line that really depends on each unique situation. For Fable 2, the price seems right for a substantial amount of content in this case. What I can't stand is overpriced DLC and Day 01 DLC. Don't make me pay to unlock things on the disc, Namco... and don't put out $30 worth of weapon and skin packs EA. That's just BS.

I also dislike how DLC is taking away from replayability of titles. Now we need to spend MORE $ on top of the $60 to get Time Trials and hidden costumes? Are you kidding me?

Extending the life of a game is great, such as with Rock Band. But all too often devs abuse both pricing as well as content and shaft consumers. We really need to start voting with our $$$ better. There is NO excuse for things like Protoman.

It might be being released 2 months after the game but that doesn't mean you have to buy it the first day it's released.

or that you have to buy it at all (which i suspect the people complaining never planned on doing anyway, I doubt they own the game or a 360)

It's out there early so when you do finish it you have a choice of getting it.
you have the option of waiting when you've finished and getting it when you want.

People that get fable for christmas have the option to dl it.

It's all about options and choices.
Don't be jealous that fable owners have them.

6.8 - I think the point is...
if DLC is released this close to the game release than it was more than likely able to be put into the original game and therefore its a rip-off to charge for something that should have been in the game in the first place a-la Soul Calibur 4. DLC should only be implemented IN RESPONSE to demand, not a way to hedge your profits. They clearly planned this DLC as a money boost even though the development for it was part of the original game development and therefore payed for with the purchas of the game itself. I understand that you can argue that its still added development cost, and therefore should be worth something. Also it doesn't cost that much, etc etc. but its a fine line and the minute we as gamers don't scrutinize this practice then it will be abused.

If this new chapter ("download") is already on the disc, then it is a ripoff and the practice should be discouraged. Gamers regardless of their stripes should denounce such practice.

however, if it is a real download then perhaps it is not that bad. We will see.

either way, I must admit i am a bit excited. loved the game..

9 - Yeah, I'll pass thanks.
Don't get me wrong. I've loved Fable 2. It's been fun but as I get close to the end of the game I find it's become quite a bit repetitive. There are still a few side quests left to do but I can't seem to bring myself to care at this point. This week I'll probably steam through the rest of the game just to finish it and trade it in. It's like GTA4 for me. It was fun, great game but by the end I was almost relieved to be done with it so I could move on to something else. On both of these, I think I'll pass on the DLC. I learned with Oblivion - expansion packs on games you've already played to death don't get played. Maybe it's just me...

800 which is roughly $10-$12 is hard to justify because it makes the overall cost about $70, especially with the main quest being so short in comparison to Fable 1. I will definitely wait and see on this one.

I'm still playing the game and having the DLC come out now is no problem by me. I'd have no problem if developers were to add substantialy sized DLC to games every 6 months or so for around 800 MS points. My only gripe is MS needs to really lower the prices on the HDD. If games keep coming out with DLC my pathetic 20Gig HDD will not have enough room to keep adding stuff. I really hate the prices of the HDD right now especially knowing you can get a much bigger HDD from Newegg for less.

I don't know why people are complaining and saying stuff like "Well, it's only been two months, why couldn't they just put it on the disc!?"

True, they may have been able to, but they didn't. If it makes you feel any better, just wait two more months then download the Content. Then it will be four months after release. =)

Nobody is forcing you to buy the content right now. It will be there later, so get it when YOU want to. This coming out right now will satisfy plenty of people, and they will be happy that the content is available.

well if they brought out dlc 6 months after release then most people would not still have the game.

if you dont want it dont buy it,think most dlc which comes out could go on the disc from launch and as the dlc dont cost much its not that big deal.
