Parental Advisory Group Says MK vs DC is Safe for the Family

Kombo writes, "No, this is not some cruel, late April Fools joke. Lets all take a second to soak this in. The American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry has spent the last the last sixteen years claiming that Mortal Kombat destroys the minds of impressionable young children. In a unexpected turn of events, the organization is now promoting Mortal Kombat vs DC as good, wholesome, family fun. WHAT?

Read it for yourself while I spend the next ten minutes trying to pinch myself out of this crazy daydream..."

American society allows for violence but not sex. Unfortunately, we live in a world that supports war. Perhaps a new President can help change that.

But what is weird is that the violence in this game has been panned so many times before.

its so strange how our society accepts one over the other. most people will see a member of the opposite sex naked at least once in their life but few will see somebody physically maimed other than on television and in movies.

Have any parents actually sat down and played this with their child?

3.1 - Has...
anyone in the gamer zone played this game? The violence has been toned down tremendously from previous MK games. To be honest, the lack of violence (which is an MK staple) has left me wishing they would have just made a proper MK game.

3.2 - @ Butterfinger
I have not played it either, but I think it got through because 1) They toned down the violence, 2) they added options to remove blood and such

Lack of violence (compared to previous installments or not) is no excuse to call this FAMILY fun.

They need to go to a rating system like the movies have and just make it illegal to buy games that are Mature unless you're over 18

Milking and changing a franchise as drastic as this is very sad.

MK used to get so much controversy, to read this is a kick in the nads to gamers.

This is a lame T rated MK game, of course it's safe for family. There is no blood or serious violence in it. The fatalities are mostly funny (unintentionally?).

10 - I dont see the point
T rated or not, its still called Mortal Kombat... as In two people fighting to the death. I don't see how wanting to be T rated even makes sense here.

Mortal Kombat only sold originally because of the violence factor. It's one of the slowest, clunkiest fighters I've ever played. Especially when you consider how fluid and smooth Street Fighter is.

Does anyone even play Mortal Kombat anymore?

These people are so confused. While Mortal Kombat was violent and had bloody fatalities, (with the exception of MK 1, which was rated the equivalent of a "T", and what MK vs DC is a throw back to) they were based on astronomical feats of strength and superhuman abilities..i.e. a person could never turn into a dragon and bite someone in half.

The fatalities in MK vs DC, while not as bloody, are equally as brutal and based on a more real world approach to killing someone. For example, most of the fatalities involve breaking bones and snapping necks, shooting someone in the head, or stabbing them with sharp objects. Something that is very easily imitated. So as I said, this PAG is ignorant and confused.
-------

As far as the game itself...

While most MK fans seemed turned off by this new approach to fatalities, I love it and hope that future MK games (sans DC Comics) continue to use this "real world" aspect.
