Rare: Our future products will "surprise" people

Rare's studio manager, Mark Betteriedge, has told GamesIndustry.biz that some of the company's future products will "surprise a lot of people, both in terms of what they are and the different styles".

Talking in an interview, the first part of which will be published tomorrow, he explained that one of the studio's roles as a first party developer was to change the perception of the Xbox 360 from just being a "shooter box, or a hardcore box," and "change the conventional thinking of games and entertainment".

Yeah and note that "surprise" isn't always a POSITIVE verb.

Let's just hope Rare's future products doesn't "surprise" as much as Banjo Kazooie: nuts and bolt did.

These guys talk way too much. Hell, they could have already released their next game if they'd stop doing interviews.

I agree that they have not released many grade A games in the last few years, but they have been fairly productive in the last 5 years considering they released 16 games. 16 games! lol Thats more the Bungie, Naughty Dog, Insomiac, and Guerilla combined.

oh, and over 90 games in their 25 years, they deserve a little respect, and praise, even though hating is in these days.

@Montrealien

16 games, that's surprising actually. When thinking of Rare I normally think of one game in a blue moon!!

I agree Rare deserve respect, and they deserve a place in the annals of gaming history.

But unfortunately in this business a developer is only as good as their last game...

I say, to each his/her own, so if people liked Nuts and Bolts, then fair enough. I played the demo and really couldn't see the appeal. I'll still rent it, as I think the concept is good even if the execution is average.

Unfortunately for me, Rare have lost the plot and are no longer a AAA developer. In fact I think Nintendo must have laughed all the way to the bank when they offloaded Rare to MS.

4.2 - I am sorry...
but the whole Rare to "rear" thing is not working out....this is your second time posting it, and it still is not clever. Perhaps you would be better off by saying that Rare is living up to their title...in that great games for them has become all but Rare. But Rare to "rear"?...come on, surely you can do better.

@Montrealien
Your statement is true....and also humorous.

Rare are a mediocre dev but people act like their good (360 fanboys). They might have been good back on the N64 but they haven't made one AAA game this gen, Treyarch are better than these and their as bland a dev as you can get.

Rare should be like Team Ninja and release a Hardcore 3 player Action game (Hint ****Toads). In a generation full of generic Space Marines, now would be the perfect time to release a game that actually has "character"

I don't know where you're getting the "anti" part from, but Rare has stumbled here and there, admititly, and while Banjo have been a decent success, Rare still needs more "oomph" to get back to the days of nintendo.

But im sure you didn't know that. take off the blindfold, bladestar.

you'll never be able to play VP like that ^_^

It's nothing to do with Xbox, it's probably the fact that they are taking a dump on old classics like perfect dark and banjo.

Oh come on Bladestar, take off those Xbox tinted glassses for a second!

Rare are/were one of my favourite developers. Their output as 'Ultimate Play the Game' on the Speccy was amazing; their output on SNES and N64 was legendary. Blast Corps is still one of my all time fave games.

But their star has falled in recent times, and it obvious to all but the most blinded fanboys. The stuff they are producing now is nothing more than solid or average compared to their glory days.

This has nothing to do with people being anti-MS or anti-Xbox and everything to do with a developer who is underperforming.

Most rational people WANT Rare to return to the good ol' days. You only need to look at how many people want an update to BattleToads and KI to see that people are willing Rare to return to the top.

But if Kameo, PDZ, Pinata and Banjo are anything to go by it's not going to happen any time soon, and the golden era of Rare could be long gone, sadly.

11.4 - Well damned if you and and don't
When RARE tries something different or New so don't wanna give it the time or day...

If they remake old games that flop, then we are back at square 1"RARE should be moving with the times.

As you know Gaming have changed since SNE/N64 days. We don't expect those Devs to put out the same type of game.

If RARE was to bring out all these old-school games(REMAKES, REHASHES, SPIN-OFFS), regardless, The question is would yo go out and buy the Xbox 360?, I bet you most wouldn't, unless your into the Xbox 360.

Those holding on to RARE glory days probably have no interest in the Platform they make games for. In the end, it doesn't even matter.

Not so KewlKat...

I would love to see Rare back at the top.

I don't want rehashes and remakes. I want good games.

In my opinion Banjo is, and should always be, a traditional platform game. There's more than enough room on the 360 for a good 3D platformer. Shoehorning Banjo in to Nuts and Bolts was not a good idea.

I thought Kameo was a solid game with masses of potential despite it's turbulent development. However have we seen a sequel?

Blast Corps could be a seriously amazing game on the 360. On the N64 it had all the ingredients of a phenomenal series which would have benefited from more powerful physics and effects that modern consoles can give.

The bottom line, regardless of what I've written above, is that if Rare came out with AAA games then it wouldn't matter. They defined genres on N64 with titles like Banjo Kazooie, Blast Corps, Jet Force Gemini etc etc and etc! They _could_ do the same on 360, but maybe the magic has gone.

Yeah, that was a surprise I could have lived with out!

In the case of Banjo I have a feeling that Microsoft may have done something similar to Rare as Nintendo did with the whole Star Fox Adventures saga.

IIRC Nintendo 'suggested' (forced?) Rare to change their Dinosaur themed adventure game in to a Star Fox game.

I have a feeling Rare may well have been working on a new IP with Nuts and Bolts, and Microsoft may well have 'suggested' they tie it to an established IP. Or maybe Rare just wasn't confident enough of having Nuts and Bolts stand on it's own, so decided to crowbar Banjo in to it.

Whatever, it didn't work on any level. Banjo needed to stay as a proper platformer and Nuts and Bolts could have worked as a new IP!

17 - Here it comes
Battletoads 360 - and they were disappointed with how easy the original was, so they're going to make it even harder.

For example, if you and your partner don't move in exactly the same way, you both get damaged.

19 - For those bashing Rare...
I ask a simple question: Is it that Rare is releasing inferior products as opposed to the past, or are they releasing the same quality of product.....but are being bashed because of evolved expectations based on prior success? Will Madden ever unseat Tecmo Bowl? Can 2K ever create the nostalgia of Double Dribble? I feel that in earlier days games lack the complexity and was full of fun with simplistic game play. ...and regardless of what companies do, expectations are too high for them to appease certain people. Honestly, how many old school games have transitioned to outstanding games for this generation or the previous?...........now look at how many newcomers are being openly welcomed......mainly because of their ability to allude expectations based on there not being a standard set by a prequel.

Most old school rare members that worked on N64 left Rare.
