GTA IV DLC delayed until Spring 2009?

Speaking at a presentation at the BMO Capital Markets Conference in New York City today, Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick revealed that the highly-anticipated downloadable content for GTA IV may not make it until next Spring.

"It's close to being complete. That said, it may move into the second quarter [of 2009]," he said. "Downloadable content is a big undertaking. It is important to be really special."

Zelnick's comments reflect recent claims by Rockstar's Dan Houser in which he couldn't commit to a 2008 release.

1.1 - i think microsoft may have thought
its better for 360 owners to delay the dlc because all their big hitters have launched, ms have some but not many exclusives for next year,so dlc to the best selling game the year before seems desperate but trust microsoft will advertise the heck outta that badboy

The DLC is a myth. Rockstar are probably, reluctantly developing it reeeealy slowly (because they have a contract). But we haven't heard anything about it. All hype and no substance. And people say Sony show off CG trailers too much to hype their games. MS didn't even have a trailer.

every diehard gta fan want

1-gta 5 ps3 exclusive
2-add more gameplay punch, make it more responsive and quick
3-more things to do

or if you think that gta got a bit old

bring back body harvest(most of you n4g gamers don't know it)

body harvest was one hell of a game,I can't really think of any other game that has the enormous potential to make a sequel than body harvest

1-open world gameplay
2-aliens
3-fiction,legends,myths
4-TIME TRAVEL(think about the huge potential
5-all viechles(cars,tanks,boats,hile copers,plans and even ufo's)
6-mountains,islands,temples,s ees,oceans
7-amazing mission structure
8-touch of rpg style gameplay
9-horror(can't forget siberia level,it was legendary)
10-epic boss fights

all of that was body harvest on n64,it was a forgotten gem made by dma(Rockstar north)

if rockstar north announce body harvest 2 on blu-ray(of course,it,s very huge)it will be one of the best days in my life

do it rockstar, don't worry,it will sell zillions

GTA IV lol. One of the worst games I've played all year and yet it outscored every other game out there. Really sad. Biased media is here to stay it seems.

And about this DLC, I doubt anyone will still be playing this trash in 2009 unless you've got no games to play.

GTA4 sucks soo bad, why would anyone want to play DLC for it? Seems like a huge waste of money for MS, most people probably won't even care when the DLC is out, I know I don't.

all I can say that it's a waste of money ms

R forget the past and do everything again

rage engine seems to hurt games,I think that action games in general doesn't shine on rage

look at mc:la,it's not as good as mc3(which was legendary)

gameplay seems a bit dull in that new mc

is it the engine? or rockstar became crap? or blu-ray need?

I don't know?

50 million was not a waste of money. I said it before and I will repeat myself. The 50 million was NEVER about DLC or the fans. 360 fans need to accept when they have been used. The 50 million was an advertising campaign. The 50 million was bragging rights designed to generate sales. The sales they wanted were launch day/week/month sales. They have those.

Now the DLC is being intentionally delayed so MS can try and throw it and one or two other useless items at February where they will be buried by Killzone2. Just watch and see that DLC get announced right after Christmas. They aren't willing to say it right now due to pending holiday sales. In many people's mind that makes the DLC unimportant and irrelevant. The DLC is irrelevant but the date has nothing to do with that.

@Morganfell - MS paid $10 Million for Halo 3's marketing campaign, GTA4 was described as having a Halo 3-sized marketing campaign from MS, which means the $50 million that they paid to Rockstar had nothing to do with marketing campaign.

http://www.joystiq.com/2008...

Meaning MS paid MORE money on top of the $50 million to market GTA4, which most likely spurred on PS3 sales of the game as well lol

You are being naive and looking at this as if it were simple black and white figures. It isn't.

GTA was grounded in the Playstation name. MS knew this and needed something they felt would lure people to buy it on the 360. That 50 million was ALL about bragging rights. The fact that MS had no idea what the DLC would be shows you hopw much of a pig in a poke they were buying...were it simply for DLC. But it wasn't about having Rockstar build something MS could sell later. That is the side benefit, not the main purpose.

MS blew that GTA4 DLC trumpet as loud a they could. Why? Because it was a trumpet. It was a "you should buy our version" trumpet. It was a marketing trumpet. DLC is in and of itself not meant to generate a great deal of money through DLC sales but has already served it's purpose. It was intended to generate sales of GTA4 itself. That my friend is marketing 101.

Halo 3 has passed
2 Gears of War games have passed
Banjo "hahahaha" and Kazooie is out; if that's even applicable
Fable 2 is out

What else do those guys have on the way? I see a sharp decline for them on hard hitting exclusive content. Face it RE5 and Tekken 6 don't have the same feel now they're both multiplatform.

As far as people buying either a PS3 or a 360 this christmas goes... the PS3 is the better option. The 360 has nothing lined up. If you've held out for this long it probably means you're not a _huge_ fan of Halo so the "let's milk the Halo franchise" games coming out aren't going to excite you particularly.

Sony has Infamous and KZ2 leading the spring 2009 charge. God of War 3 and even possibly GT5 (don't get your hopes up about GT5 though) should come next year. Heavy Rain looks very promising also.

100% correct. Sony, once again, will have the most exclusives next year (MAG, God of War 3, InFamous, Killzone 2, White Knight Chronicles, Heavy Rain, Wardevil, Gran Turismo 5, etc) while the only good looking 360 game left (apparently, since Microsoft hasn't announced anything else for 2009 other than another mediocre game from tri-Ace) is Alan Wake, a game that hasn't even been SHOWN running on the 360 hardware and yet 360 fanatics use it as a weapon against Heavy Rain, an innovative game that graphically slaughters everything else out there, Crysis and Killzone 2 included.

On topic, GTA IV sucked with PS2 graphics and frame rate problems in every version. Anybody that still plays that trash needs some new games.

GTA IV DLC will not break any records...by time it comes out..many will have forgotten about it..

or have bought a PS3 becuase 360 has no games line up for 2009.....

That like if they release new DLC for Kameo? Spring is 5 months away? thats almost half a year...How many people will die in the next five months? How many will get the RROD/DVD tray would not open....issues in 5 months?

How many people would see Killzone2 in Feb 2009...and say F*uk GTA IV DLC...I am getting a PS3..Bit*h...

GTA IV DLC overrated...................ki nda like Fable II currently playing and it is very Blah(Not bad but not great)..but hey getting easy points...I love games where i do not die...no challegne whats so ever?? great way to kill about 4 hours...and at the pace I am going I may beat this game in about 6-7 hours....the last Fable I beat in about 5-6 hours..

Not going to break records, everyone has sold gta4 back to used game stores. Dlc wont save a terrible game, just keep it on life support. MS wasted a lot of money to get an imaginary edge on sony, just the wrong decision. paying all that money to get dlc a year after the games release.

And RROD is not dead. I bought a second 360 in July after the first price drop and it got the RROD a week later. Then it got it again in late September. Luckily I got it back before Fable 2 came out.

The funny thing though is that it happened the first time I actually booted the system up to play some titles I missed out on from January 2007 to July 2008. You see, my first 360, a launch unit, kicked the bucket in January 2007 after one bout with the RROD and then with a dead disk drive. After that, I swore off of the 360 until they got it under control.

be smart ppl and be thankfull they are trying to do something that is focused on quality of content instead of milking us with new outfits and clothing packages for 1500 ms points a piece.

they said they are taking their time to make it something really special and make sure it is good. To me that is what matters. sure if they released it this holiday season everyone would be like oh finally and then everyone would start whining about how there isnt much content. either way people are going to whine cause they all love to hype and hype and hype things up and then when it comes they are the same ppl doing the trash talking = theres your problem

7 - Yeah, DLC doesn't really do anything for me.
I guess it's nice but I've almost never bothered. I agree with some of those postings above. Not much out there coming up for the 360, it really seems to be winding down. It had been over a year that I bought anything for my 360 (I get all my multiconsole titles on the PS3 as I'm on my 4th 360 and don't really trust it). I bought Halo 3 then..nothing. Finally I was able to dust it off when Fable 2 and Gears 2 hit, and I'm enjoying the hell out of both of these but other than Alan Wake, there's nothing on the 360 horizon that's interesting me. Halo Recon - 5 hours, I'll pass. Halo Wars - I'm sorry, console RTS? I'll pass. L4D - I'll get it on the PC if it turns out alright. It really does feel like the 360 is winding down before the replacement is due out in a couple of years. I hope I'm wrong as I'd love to get a few more decent exclusives out of my 360 for all the hassle it's caused me, but I just don't see that happening.

What else do those guys have on the way? I see a sharp decline for them on hard hitting exclusive content. Face it RE5 and Tekken 6 don't have the same feel now they're both multiplatform.

don't underestimate ms here, you do realize thats why they wait for e3's and other big trade shows to deliver these former ps exclusives going multi-platform blows just to get the media and everyone else back on sony's case.

on the exclusive side they do have some games lined up.

Halo wars is coming, halo recon which i now hear is only 5 hours and change long is also due at the end of the year as well.

that forever delayed splinter cell conviction that supposedly cant be done on the ps3 is still schedule to come out some time next year.

left4 dead if im not wrong, expect a few pgr's you know they normally throw around 2 of those in a single year.

alan wake is still in pending so thats up as well.

ninja blade? don't know but can be a sleeper hit you never know.

last renmnant for at least a 6 month gap, until it comes to the ps3.

killer instinct 3 is already in development and has been for quite some time so... yeah they have a few sleek titles on the way as well. but not too many which is why i believe they are paying loads of cash for exclusive dlc and such.

that game prototype was delayed for one reason and one reason only, and if you are ms you are thinking i gotta get a counter for sony's infamous, so they'll probably do what they do with most money hungry 3rd parties and bribed em or something.

ms isn't stupid at all, heck i hear crysis is supposed to come to consoles in 09 and i bet all the money in the world ms will try to get a 6 month exclusive hold on that so they can counter killzone 2, is just how this market works for the most part.

not like a console crysis is going to be able to match the ground up build console shooter killzone 2 no way, but you all know how this works. just my personal opinion.

Well, this might be a good thing AND a bad thing.

It's the same reason that it can be a good and a bad thing. The good, the hype of the game is gone, and new content will bring people back and more people might buy it, beliving it's something "new". The bad, the hype of the game is gone, and people are tired of the game, because they have already played it so much.

But, I belive from a M$ perspective, then it's good. Because they have Gears2 and Fable 2 out now, two games that people will play, and then maybe not bother to download the DLC

20 - I'm a PS3-only owner, but being a big GTA fan I was still curious to see what this DLC is about.
I was hoping this DLC might improve GTA 4 in some way, with some new additions and upgrades to the game. Since it has been stated by Rockstar that DLC will appear at some later stage on the PS3 (minus the 360 exclusive new episodes), I was hoping the 360 would prove the DLC to be a success. Well it seems like something very fishy is going on here. People are definitely not gonna care too much for this DLC now if it does go to Spring 2009. That $50 million must have been used for something else, or Microsoft have just been f*cked in the ass and tossed aside on the floor by Rockstar!

One a side note - I personally think the next GTA title should be a PS3 exclusive, it will be potentially much better and more detailed, packed with lots of content, made possible by the PS3's Blu-Ray and Cell capabilities. And before you fanboys and try and bite my head off, you can check see for yourself that GTA creator Dan Houser has previously stated that the 360's technical capabilities are quite limiting for making huge, detailed games like GTA.

I too felt very let down by GTA 4, even though it was still a very good game it was just missing too many vitally popular features that could have made it a great title. People say GTA 4 is massively overhyped, but I actually think it deserved the hype considering massive expectations surrounding it and the hugely positive previews it was getting before its release. However, I can say that GTA 4 will probably go down as one of the greatest disappointments in gaming history, what a serious letdown it became in the end.

I just really hope Rockstar make the next GTA title alot better than the latest offering.

it is funny when everybody says ms doesn't have anything lined up for 2009 when everybody knows ms doesn't announce things until they are mere months away

look at things like nxe and gears 2

gears 2 wasn't announced until what? february of this year?
NXE at e3?

people were certain that ms was going to announce motion controllers, they never did

people guaranteed blu-ray xboxes, they never came

the truth is the public has no idea what is cooking inside the redmond fortress, it could be the most mind blowing thing we have ever seen, or it could be simply something average

but i can guarantee they have something, if not a few things we have not seen or even heard a rumor of

nobody knows what microsoft has and that is the fact, halo recon probably wouldn't even have been announced yet had bungie not tried to announce it at e3, but the botched announce let the cat out of the bag until the official word a few weeks back

sony has a bunch of promises that may or may not deliver, ms has yet to show what they have

it is pretty slick strategy if you ask me, look at the hype the boiled up for gears in less than 9 months...it didn't need a CGI trailer 4 years in advance

personally i hate when something is show and then we hear "we will see this in 2 years", then why show it at all?

we didn't even see screenshots or trailers for gta until couple months out, that is the right way to do it

alan wake and killzone are victims of their own success, they had these really early trailers that looked amazing and now they have to be perfect or the game is over

as for the gta content, i got rid of gta a while ago as did a lot of people i know, it just didn't hold my interest at all, the story was less exciting than other gtas, and the multiplayer just wasn't good, more often than not the personalities of the people playing are what ruined it, but what do you expect from people playing gta? definitely not maturity

at this point it it hard to say what i'll be playing in march, if i'm playing at all, gaming just hasn't been that exciting lately and it is about that time in the cycle where i sit back and enjoy what i have and maybe check out something outside my usual realm once in a while
