Gears 2 - A WTF Moment With Cliff Bleszinski In Australia

From OXCGN:
"Well Gears Of War 2 is just around the corner and waiting to hit our shores come November 7th at exactly 0.00:1am. Several midnight launches around Australia will be handing over the game to eager Gears Of War 2 fans. We will be some of the first "official" players online with Gears Of War 2, playing with those on our Friends-List.

You see our valued North American readers, Fri 0.00:1 7th November is around *16-20 hours BEFORE the East Coast of the United States or Canada even wakes up . . . let alone ticks over the hour of Midnight of the 6th into the 7th.

While talking to Mr Bleszinski - (we'll call him Cliff for ease of this discussion) - I had the opportunity to ask him a few personal questions. I wanted to approach him about his background. A couple of my questions had him looking a little amazed and perplexed.

I asked him if he was "happy now that the game he was originally building in high school was finally in the can . . The game called 'Over Fiend' . . . . you remember?!" Cliff stood still for a moment, looked straight at Scott (Pulse rep) and then asked, "what did you say?" - I thought I'd broken some Gears Of War protocol or something. I repeated the question. He asked again, "what game did you say?"."

It was an excellent evening and a great opportunity to speak with Cliff and several others during the night. But I have to say, I wasn't impressed with Gears 2, what was on show was a 5-6 month old build which definitely showed its age and had problems.

Visually it left a lot to be desired, and I "think" other games will leave it behind in their wake come Christmas when you place them side by side and look at the features each has.

But it will keep the Gears "run-n-gunners" faithful happy.

Why would they show a 5-6 month old build if the game is gold?

hmm.....
I sure as hell would hate to have the same questions asked to me every single day. Good Job thinking of something new and unique.

Midnight Launches? What stores in AUS are having midnight launches?

Well my first guess would be EB, followed by GAME. I'm a bit 'meh' about GOW2, only because there are so many great games sitting near the 360 waiting to be played. I'm sure I'll enjoy it when I get to it, but it does seem a bit 'more of the same' to me. I loved the original, except for the stupid AI for Dom when I wasn't playing co-op and the need for teamwork in online multi.

Well if I find out, I'll pop it up as soon as I can, I think GAME will have, and most likely out at Parramatta in the Sydney area as it's one of their biggest stores.

Here we go, now I can't wait for all those GoW fan's to complain that Gow2 is really only Gow1.5... But full well knowing that if EPIC pushed this sequel too far from the original, that the same people would be online complaining that #2 isn't "Gow-enough".

Funny to read up on Cliff's "WTF Who is this guy?" reaction to your Q's - but it doesn't make me want to play GoW2 anymore... ;)

I'm the same, great guy to chat with, game left me a bit flat actually on the night. Not sure how the final product will go, but I'm not expecting HUGE changes or leaps and bounds from Gears 1.

Sure, it'll be good, but it certainly isn't the second coming of christ or anything like many of the Gears-mad fans seem to think it is. Left 4 Dead shows more promise imo

I cant wait for this game, I'm getting the LE for a very good price. To all Aussies, check out the DSE catalogue, Gears 2 LE for $79.98.

See, they can't even give it away (jk btw) . .I remember Gears 1 - you couldn't get the LE for anything less that $100 until a week or two after launch, now they have it at $30 below RRP before its release - makes you wonder - doesn't it ?

You can trade 3 games in for it at JB too when it is out...that's for the LE. Of course there is always an exclusion list...

The level of excitement generated by Gears and Halo is unequal.I really can't imagine this type of awareness escalating with R2 to the point where Gears is right now. These shooters have a kind of magic rarely seen it seems

Its all media... I played halo 1 and 2 and i played gears. They were far over hyped. Microsoft has its hands in all kinds of media therefore its very easy for them to start viral advertising campaigns for their games.. The features in R2 blow gears away but the hype train isnt as large because sony lets the games sell themselves.....

While I disagree, I agree . . Odd one eh . . one of those catch 22 situations. R2 is even panned by some of the most respected media writers. One previewed BOTH R2 and KZ2 and had severe things to say about R2, yet gave KZ2 great [praise, and he was/is a Sony supporter. SO there's no bias there.

While youmight think that Sony allow games to "sell themselves", that is actually not true. They simply do NOT have the budget to do so, especially now that the PS3 will basically no bring in any profit for the platform at all over its life time, and they will have to rely on software and other means to bring things into line.

MS on the other hand HAVE the spare cash (in excess of $US25billion is surplus CASH - compared to Sony's $US3 billion or less right now) So in essence, they can't spend the $US10- $US15+ Million on Advertising alone to promote ONE single game, let alone several at once, whereas MS-Xbox DIv do have that ability.

Sony are behind the eightball in that regard, but if they had the funds, then they would make just as much fuss as MS-Xbox Div do, probably more

He said to Scott, hey man, this is scary, like only a handful of people knew that stuff . . next thing he'll be saying don't get on the airplane as it could have a problem, then I would be scared" . .or words to that affect . .

I believe that if you want to talk about something, then know what you're going to be talking about. The two best books to really give you an HONEST background on the Xbox Platform are Dean Takahashi's Opening The Xbox and Xbox 360 Uncloaked. Both of which show the 360 was in the works as early as 2002. When I tell ppl this they think I', nuts. Or when I mention that the 1st-gen xbox was never meant to have a life other than 5 yrs at the most, they simply brush it off saying it was MS's fault for pulling the plug on it. It had a job to do.

Get developers on board, and get ppl involved in LIVE, that was it's sole purpose in life. The 360 was aimed at coming in 5 years after its launch, and they were discussing that and the plan for that in late 2002 and had a white paper on it in 2003. You can't go wrong in grabbing those two books, even if you don't have a 1st-gen xbox, you'll learn heaps about Sony, and their team and also the Xbox team that kicked the whole thing off. 10 gamers started it all.
