PlayStation 3/Xbox 360 Console War: Unneeded Animosity?

PSX Extreme writes: "Has anyone else noticed a disturbing trend in the console war, specifically between PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 loyalists? I own both consoles, most people I know own both consoles, and if you're not familiar with the PSX Extreme readership, we are a diverse group that loves to play great games. Sure, we've got mostly PS3 fans, but we don't - and never will - tolerate the fanboy mentality from either side. But over the past year or so, it seems as if there's a huge amount of animosity between those who favor one side or the other, and I suppose my question is...why?"

i could understand if both systems cured cancer, and one cured it quicker than the other, but they play GAMES. 360 vs ps3 is the biggest non issue of all time. who cares what system joe blow plays his games on. i really dont care. it didn't matter to me if snes was better than genesis, or that xbox was better than ps2, i know that to play all the good games, you have to have all the systems. both companies make a fine product. i can understand fanboys buying whaever they think is better, but flaming someone else because3 they bought what they thought was better is plain stupid. if you love your console so much, go frickin play the damn thing

I believe what he says as far as the whole fanboy thing getting way out of hand.

Like when a Gamestop employee starts getting red in the face because you buy a PS3 instead of a Wii or 360 (and yes, it happened to me). Or when somebody on the internet feels the need to wish horrible death upon you because you don't support their system.

I mean, competitive spirit has been around for ages, like in my area in Northern IL, it's always been Cubs vs. Sox when it comes to baseball, and man oh man when the White Sox won the World Series in '05, Cubs fans went total apesh!t, and some @sshole started smashing the windows out of cars that had Sox stickers on them.

The console wars are similar, but it's being taken too far, by people of general worthlessness who feed on it, and exacerbate the problem by making websites and committing general acts of Jackassery (i.e. the video of some loser in a Master Chief costume teabagging a PS3), and making videos on YouTube on why "your system sucks and mine's better, and it has to be the truth because my video's on YouTube and has over 100,000 views."

Bring on the disagrees, 'cause I know they're comin'.

First my problem with the 360 stems from it's reliability issues, but since my PS3 just died on me I guess I can't argue that anymore. Second, I have a strong hatred for Microsoft that's existed long before the XBox. I hate the business practices of MS and I'm afraid that they are going to try and monopolize the game industry like they have monopolized the OS market. Maybe it's unfounded but from what I've seen in this generation with them buying exclusives and doing whatever it takes to buy their way into victory it really frightens me. Sony on the other hand, has been a company that I have supported since long before the PlayStation brand was created. They place a priority on innovation to get market share. I've owned more than a dozen different products in my lifetime. So my loyalty stems from long before this console crap. If the 360 was made by any other company than MS then I would probably own one by now.

I see it from a different perspective as I have always seen MS being good to their consumers. I have never really had a complaint about a piece of MS software and their activation policy on Windows XP/MS Office 2003 is awesome. IE was free and integrated well with Windows. Almost non-existant DRM in prior versions of Windows (I haven't used Vista/Office 2007 enough to know, only things I hear). I actually dread if we had some other company having the monopoly....

Sony on the other hand have a long history of DRM (securom, rootkit scandal), forcing proprietary formats, non-existant warranty/support for their products (case in point their Thinkpad priced laptop with el-cheapo brand support) and poor user interface. I must admit that in recent times I have seen big changes at Sony, more specifically the PS3 is arguably the most open console out their and give them great props on that.

I'm probably going to get hatemail just like last time, when I said something pro MS. For some reason MS can only do all wrong, yet Google can do no wrong... To me a company is only as good as it treats it customers in recent times. A company changes attitude really really quick, so don't blindly love a company.

Fighting over Pointless Frame Rate Comparisons and how much AA a game has is the only thing that stops them from getting a "real life" Girlfriend and social skills, obviously this is not what they aspire to. The PS3 is, feature for feature, cheaper than the Xbox 360 and not more expensive as the article claims.
Blu-Ray Player, easily upgradable standard SATA II Hard drive, free online gameplay, and other stuff I've probably overlooked because I'm too keen to get back to Little Big Planet Beta, Motorstorm 2 demo and delete that crappy hail to the chimp demo.

Fanboys... the lowest form of scum and villainy in the galaxy. They are unable to discuss a hobby as adults. They are so below me its silly, and yes, sometimes I revel in being able to take their ill thought "arguments" and ram them down their hypocritical throats in the name of entertainment... but then I left Gamefaqs. This site appears to be even worse, amazingly...

And yes, it's okay to have preference. It's okay to like something more than something else. But people take everything as a personal insult these days, or an attack. Hell, I'm not a fan of Halo. I find it mediocre. But I have respect for it, and what it did for console FPS. But goddamn, if you don't treat Halo 3 as a perfect game, as the second coming of Christ, you are labeled a fanboy? Eff that. Learn to dialogue people. Vocabulary. Intelligence. Use it, you might be surprised at the good discussion that comes out.

I think the internet, forums, etc have helped in the breeding of this BS. No accountability. People hide behind their cozy monitors, without fear of reprisals. Seriously, they need to grow up. I pity fanboys. They don't have lives, and if the most important thing is their love of a piece of electronics, as they cheerlad a faceless corporation that wants nothing more than their MONEY, well...

17 - Most PS fans like myself

didn't care about what MS and supporters were doing before until alot of PS fans realise that MS and some supporters are out to destroy the PS brand which we love. Its really simple.

MS sofar early in this gen is more concerned about making the PS3 less desirable to consumers than them making the x360 more desirable to the consumers. For example MS is still charging for Live. By making it free their system will be alot more desirable than the PS3. MS not releasing the x360 early to improve their system reliability would also make the x30 more desirable to consumers but no, they were more focused on beating Sony.

The talk from the MS brass sofar has been very fanboyish. They even made a list of PS3 exclusive to poach. This is the example that the heads of the xbox division setting.

However, there are issues like what I've been seeing.

My article that I made about Kotaku, for example, that I submitted here (which I do not regret submitting and I stand behind the article, by the way). I was attacked by the pro-MS fanboys because of whatever reason they listed. Yeah, there were some people that were giving me advice, and I thank them for it (forgive me if I don't remember the names of those people). However, the issues begin when you go and talk about ANY fault that you think Microsoft has. You mention even ONE and here we go, and there's not one time in which they ever say anything to actually counter your point. They just don't want to think that anyone is ever allowed to say anything BAD about Microsoft, and you're never allowed to criticize anyone who gives MS a free pass.

No, I don't think Microsoft made a completely bad console. Hell, I'm not sure how in the hell anything about me saying that I was planning on buying the 360 once I had the money to DO so. However, there is good and bad with any system, and I have said the faults that Sony has had with their system before. The main difference I've seen from the Sony "fanboys" is that they have taken the criticisms with a far better civilized responses than the 360 fancrowd has taken criticisms of THEIR console. Are ALL fanboys on EITHER side like that? Of course not.

But the main issue behind why I think the 360 crowd is more rabid now towards anyone that brings up faults in the 360 is because the 360 was riding high against the PS3 for a good long while. NO one thought the PS3 would gain ground in such a short amount of time, and the people who stood behind the PS3 suddenly had substance to back up why their reasons. They are in panic mode (why, I ask), because they never thought that the "enemy" could do something like that so quickly.

I believe that they really need to chill and take the good with the bad. This site is really the only gaming site I've seen so far where things can happen to your account when people do not like your opinion (they can take away your right to EXPRESS that opinion by bursting bubbles).

And people have to really STOP equating two things that are not equal. You are not a fanboy if you say legit faults of the other console. That's not what a fanboy is. You CAN own a console and still say that the thing has faults. A fanboy is one that will venomously defend his own console without backing anything up or fail to even see ANY faults while bashing the other time and time again without daring to think that there would be good to a console. The fanboy label has been pinned on too MANY people in this respects.

There, I've said MY view.

The 360 is hardly mediocre. I have had 4 and they have all been below mediocre. Calling them that is an insult to the mediocre.

My latest 360 is a HALO Edition bought when they launched. The Play and Charge kit that was included was dead on arrival. The battery was useless too. So MS sends me a new one 6 weeks later. Well it lasted...a year.

My HALO edition has been locking up lately. Yesterday I plug up the Play and Charge kit and power down the console. It should charge the controller and then turn off. 8 hours later it is still on. Neither of the spare batteries I have will work now and I don't know if it is the 360, the Charge kit, both batteries or all 3. Wonderful piece of below average hardware. Trash from MS, just trash.

a fanboy is a person who feels the need to defend his system of choice. The one he bought with his own money or in 360 owners case the one mommy bought to save a couple bucks

PS3 does not need defending! We do not have to defend a company that has delivered PS1 PS2 and now PS3! In all those cases Sony has created a long list of exclusive IP's and they continue this trend well into the PS3 life cycle. Sony has been in the gaming biz for a very long time! They dont need defending

MS on the other hand breeds this sort of attitude! The 360 needs defending because it has a fail rate well above the normal fail rate for consumer electronics and they cut XBOX off at the knee's! They do not offer much in terms of new IP's and it will take 10 more years for them to even touch the amount of games Sony can push out the door!

If MS had never cheated and stole there way to the richs that they now use to brainwash and fool the consumer we would have never heard the term 'FANBOY"

MS is crap and the best they can do 8 years into the game is take OLD Sony exclusives and make them multi-platform! They make themselfs 2 good exclusives a year and those will always come out on the holidays because they know thats when ppl are spending the money on silly gifts

it used to be cool & different. But It was temporary. We were all waiting for ps3.
then the xbox360 broke before we could trade it & trapped many in a closed network
prison. The more people that jumped into the peer 2 peer connection, the laggier it got!

Now its a kids toy. Pffft. Its not even a all in one console like what was promised this gen.
Sony delivered. Ps3 is supreme hardcore gaming for real gamers who play large scale games !

I dont need a xbox360 for cross game chat but I do need my ps3 for everything entertaining & interactive.
xbox fans just have animosity towards playstation fans.
just say home to them & they will have a heart attack.

Look at how they are selling fable2. The combat is classic combo interruption like devil may cry , heavonly sword &
ninja gaiden. But all of a sudden the director is saying he is invented it. What? Its up to the players style? What?
One day the babies will grow up but just like ps2 it will happen in ps3's 3rd year.

Half of these knew xboxfans are coming from wii graphics. What do they know?
its great to be hardcore, underground & different with the ps3 at my fingertips.
