Schappert - "I don't know" when GTA IV DLC will be released

Eurogamer: "John Schappert, the man in charge of Xbox Live, has admitted he's no idea when we'll see the downloadable content for Grand Theft Auto IV.

Last we heard, the DLC - which is exclusive to Xbox 360 - was down to be released "this autumn".

But, well, it's October now. So during a roundtable interview at the Tokyo Game Show, we asked Schappert whether we will indeed see the content this side of Christmas.

"Frankly, I don't know," said the Xbox Live boss. "Rockstar are the people to ask for that."

He went on to add, "I hope as a gamer, just like I'm sure you do as a gamer, the sooner the better. I can't wait for it." Even though, Schappert confirmed, he hasn't had the chance to give it a play as yet.

I don't think its going to be nearly as big as you think it is. The best they could do is another island. Anything bigger and it'd just be space. I'm assuming they'd have to populate the new area with missions and stuff, so I wouldn't hope for anything as grand in scale as SA.

Also, you'd have to wonder the price point for something that large. If its as big as they imply (or even just another island), it's going to be at least $30. I know I wouldn't pay it, but I'm not really interested. I got the PS3 version, and found the game disappointing anyway. As long as it R* didn't cut anything from the original game to put it in the DLC, I don't really care what it turns out to be.

Edit: Nevermind about the price point. You obviously already assumed that reading your comment below. I'm just wondering whether people will be willing to pay that for a game that (imo) was damaged by a head on collision with the hype train. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft's investment pays off.

Whether it's big or not, thats pretty bad PR. You spend so much money on DLC, you let 360 owners and potential owners know about the DLC to have them buy the 360 version. MS is obviously a multi-billion dollar company, so I suspect they know how to get the most out of their investments.

But paying $50 million for the idea of DLC with no concrete schedule on a physical product seems kind of wasteful.

Unless:

1. MS knew it was coming in 2009 and continued to push it as a fall release in hopes of driving more GTA sales this holiday.

2. MS is releasing it in 2009, along with all their other planned DLC, during the traditionally slow spring and summer months.

I do agree however that the longer the DLC takes to get here the less it will sell. After the holiday season GTA IV is going to become further and further a footnote and MS has wasted some serious $$$.

lost inrest? there making a whole new game here you know. the houser bros said it would be something so big they could market it as a stand alone product. so expect this to be an official expansion pack and for this to be sold in stores for 30$ or something.
im actually quite shure its going to be san andreas add on as it says so on the rockstarsocialclub.

yea it has taken a while, but think about it. its been like 6 months of development time, it took 11 months to make the whole game of vice city..

GTAIV, getting Trophies and Home Support, all without Sony Paying a Cent, and might even get the next GTA game as a PS3 exclusive because of the lack of a HDD. See whos winning this Generation between these two companies?

Microsoft was basically Trying to force R* to bring the DLC before the end of the calendar year, although R* stated many times its coming out in 09, lets see how this is going to play out.

It seems like the pressure is on Rockstar to deliver this soon. This is probably why GTA IV's online seems to have been abandoned. Barely any updates or new content. Not even Horse Armor :(

the saddest part.. based on sales the DLC didnt help move that much more console or gta4 sales toward microsoft.

the sales matched expected sales for install base had there been no DLC.

even amazon has the ps3 version higher on the best selling than on the 360.

Yeah it's probably for the best anyway. I mean no one buys DLC for their family members on Christmas (at least mine doesn't). Plus all the other games would have definitley cast a shadow on this.

It's a balancing act. They need to release it early enough so its still relevant, and during a gaming dry spell. I kind of think COD4's map pack was released at a bad time, for example. MGS4 was out a week later and they hadn't released anything since launch. Luckily the game was immensely popular, but I still didn't buy it (although I did get it, shared PS Store downloads ftw) and I'm guessing the sales were probably hurt as a result.

I just think MS and R* are pushing the time limit a little, although they obviously don't have a choice. It probably would have been perfect last month.

...let me ask you something: If this is the friends you think you want, who the hell needs enemies?

You have now seen what MS has done. They have opened their mouths way too many times, and after all these outlandish claims of them knowing when your DLC was going to come out for a game that they weren't even developing (which is something that has become foreign to them recently: First party studios and actually making up their OWN ideas instead of trying to swipe things that every other console manufacturer helped make famous and then just hope that something good comes out of it). What are you going to do about it? How HASN'T this relationship between you and MS NOT ended in divorce yet? How are you still thinking that this was a wise move to get into bed with these people? They are now admitting that they have no clue what is going on, something they should've said a LONG time ago. What ARE you going to do about this? How are you going to say how MS has treated this issue? You're the ones that thwarted EA's plans, so money doesn't necessarily control you completely. There has to be still SOME morality within that company of your's. SHOW IT!!

My recommendation: Give that money back and make the damn things multiplatform and get it over with. Show MS that they cannot do all of this and not expect to have some consequences for not being able to shut up about their "partners".

And Eidos, SE, are you listening? If MS is treating Rockstar this way (just as they treated Level 5), how good do you think they are really willing to treat YOU?

Really, does anyone care? GTA DLC is already a thing of the past. By the time it comes out, nobody will buy it because bigger and better games will be released and GTA IV will continue to sit on the bottom of people's games stacks and on store shelves collecting dust. I'm a pretty big GTA fan and even I have moved on from this game. I own both the 360 and PS3 versions and was hyped about the DLC when it was first announced, but it's been MONTHS since the game came out and with no further news from Rockstar I just gave up on it. With games like Gears 2, Resistance 2, LittleBigPlanet, Midnight Club: LA, and more I doubt I'll be playing GTA IV for a long time to come.

1 - I forgot about the dlc for GTA 4.

When it comes out I doubt anyone is going to get it. Seems like a waste of money if you ask me. GTA 4 is just really over hyped garbage. The online was horrible as is the combat.

How long are you PS3 droids going to waiting for DLC? Forever!

I'd rather have to wait a few months while I have plenty of things to play and then have the DLC come when it's ready and hopefully during a low in game releases. I agree it will hurt sales the longer it's pushed but like I said at least we have DLC which is rumored to be huge.
