Will the Xbox 360 survive past Christmas?

Davey Winder writes: "The red rings of death issue simply refuses to go away for Microsoft, and no matter how much it reduces the cost and extends the warranty one simple question remains: will the Xbox 360 ever be fit for purpose?

I guess that the headline should have read 'Will my Xbox 360 survive past Christmas?' given that I intend to use my own experience of Xbox 360 ownership to highlight that, no matter how hard Microsoft tries to convince the public differently, it just cannot seem to fix the hardware problems users of the Xbox 360 face."

If you have a launch system you only have a few more weeks to manually make it red ring before your warranty is up.

You're better off getting it repaired now than having to pay for the repair later.

(I guess that the headline should have read 'Will my Xbox 360 survive past Christmas?' )

you guessed correctly fine sir!

I think this is just a bad experience from and informed cunsumer who just happens to write for a tech site. He also knows what has been giving traffic to sites these days, and his story on his personnal experience, with that title will get a few clics for his 4 freakin pages. every page felt like I was clicking for a refesh of the stupids pop-ups, lol

another thing that pisses me off is that fact that crap like this is rotting N4G into a place to go see how the (enthusiasts) act. This stupid story was approved in 20 minutes, when real news for gamers sits in the pending section for hours and hours.

I dont want to see the 360 die at all. In fact we NEED the 360 and the PS3. I own both.

The competition between the both systems is the reason we are not all here playing some gimick Wii crappy game and talking about how terrible the graphics are.

The competition between both Sony and Microsoft is the reason that online gaming is becoming more and more diverse.

They are the reason we are playing amazing games in HD.

Kudos to both Microsoft and Sony for continuously pushing the gaming industry forward instead of backward like Nintendo has done with their gimick wii system....

2 - Thats a bad way of saying the 360 has lots of great games this winter.
If your 360 breaks get it fixed under warranty.
I'm on my 6th or 7th (can't remember now) and each replacement has come with another 3 year warranty.

I expect my controller will break considering all the use i intend on giving it this winter.

Gears 2, Fable 2, Fallout 3, Prince of Persia, End War and COD5

sorry by mistake disagreed. Here bubbles to make it up for it. Also its like now $199 and more reliable than the previous version so who the hell cares with 3 years warranty. Read somewhere on n4g one guy's ps3 conked off so what will that guy do now? GO pay another $300 for new one?

PS3 owners have warranties as well, it's just a rare case to hear they need to use it. If you find it okay to buy a newer version of the same console because it's more reliable then ok. I'm sure PS3 owners are comfortable knowing the money they paid for theirs is the only amount of money they have to pay for their hardware. But way to go, mentioning Ps3 owners were they have no part, yeah, they're the defensive ones.

Yeah I was annoyed when my PS2 broke, the laser in the disk tray crapped out, I managed to sell it to a friend for dirt cheap who thought he could fix it though (he couldn't). Only problems I've had with my launch PS3 have been 2 faulty USB ports (which certain firmware updates have fixed, others have broken them again) and those L2 and R2 buttons that break, that's happened on one of my controllers. But then, it's a playstation console so you kinda expect the L2 and R2 buttons to break.

2.6 - I got my 360 in Jan. of 2007...
I have had no problems at all, and according to what i have read, it has the same chip setup that the launch 360's have. My 360 is downstairs in the coolest room in the house, but I have accidently left it on overnight a few times and it's still going. I'm not going to try to intentionally make it break. If it is still working by Jan 2010, I will definitely have gotten my money's worth by far, considering I only paid $300 in a sale price back then. And would have no problem just buy a new arcade unit, which by 2010, will prolly be 125 or 100 dollars.

This article fails and the guy who wrote it fails.

I bought a x360 around launch, and it lasted about 8 months before it died. Since then, the replacement has worked just fine.

Also, my PS3 bricked on the last major firmware update, and that got fixed as well (same PS3 came back ... or at least, the same HDD came back)

So, for me, they are each equally as faulty. One was software related, one was hardware, but the net result for me was a week or so turnaround until it got repaired.

Another perfect use or time travel so I can go back and not read this crap. I am still on my first 360 which resides in a 6 yo boys room now that I have added an elite to my game room but I do have dual 4" fans pulling air out the rear of my cabinet. I know the problem exists but I do not know of one person who has experienced it. The xbox brand isn't going anywhere and neither is playstation and that is GREAT news for us gamers.

5 - My take...
These are substantiated claims and concerns. I know people like cheap things, but people also like cheap hookers. Doesn't mean it's better than a real girlfriend or wife.

The longevity and novelty of a 360 seems to be fading- only stimulated by a drastic price cut in the heat of a ass whooping by Sony.

Sony is not as flexible as they should be. But, a $299.99 PS3 will sound better than a $199.99 360, and sales will represent this. 2008 does seems like the last hoorah for MS.

5.3 - not defending or attacking anyone....just stating facts
Alot of these posts are from people who can't take an unbiased approach or POV on anything concerning the ps3/360/ or wii in the gaming industry.
Heres a few facts since I work in the gaming industry every day:
I sell the ps3 console for 399.99$...I make .49¢ profit on it.
I sell the the 360 for 299.99$...I make 19.98$ profit on it.
I sell the wii for 269.99$...I make 14.01$ profit on it.

These numbers are relative to what each company makes. Sony still sells the ps3 at a loss (which is undisclosed; apart from the confirmed loss of 3.3 billion in thier last trimester) at least they let the market make a miserable .49¢ on it.

Microsoft sells thier console at a steady profit. Last month they beat ps3 in Japan, thanks to Tales of Verespia. According to G4TechTV 360 sells are up in North America and on the rise.

Here are the sells numbers for North America in August
wii - 453,000 consoles sold
360 - 195,200
ps3 - 185,400
Ds - 518,300
Psp - 253,000
*source: The NPD Group

In my own store here are the total number of sales for the 360 and ps3 (this includes all models)
X360 - 302 consoles total
ps3 - 167 consoles total

To post this article, the author had no evidence or support to back up his claims apart from his own bad experiences with the console. I get alot more claims of ps3 problems and failures then I do with the 360 (last year it was the opposite, but that was LAST year.)

With all the games coming out between now and christmas for the 360, I don't see it slowing down, let alone failing. The ps3 will still be going strong thanks to its bluray drive (and hopefully HOME) but not because of 360 failing nor Sony exclusives. Fable 2 will be selling alot more consoles then Resistence 2 (now thats an opinon) Apart from LBP I don't see any "system sellers" on the ps3.

I have both consoles and I am in no way biased to any console. All the information given is confirmed from valuable sources.

9.1 - When warrenty runs out.
It'll be at one point be cheaper for people to buy a new 360 then send them in for repair. At least the perceived install base will continue to grow even if old consoles are replaced completely. It's not like the install base subtracts the dead disguarded consoles the same way new purchases add to it. :)

This comment isn't reserved to 360 alone, but since 360 has been listed as having a higher failure rate it's impact is greater. When choosing a platform to develop for a consensus of the install base is used. Since the install base is a deciding factor in how resources are distributed this can give a false impression of overall success.

You then realize that having shipped 20 million doesn't directly translate to 20 million, although it's perceived as 20 million functioning units when calculated to the public and the developers.

Once the warranty runs out most people will just replace their worn out units, but by that time they'll have already served their purpose. The prices will drop and this will discourage people from buying used systems without warranties while adding to the perceptuion that the install base is still growing from new owners.

RROD has happened to me as well. It sucks and I want MS to find a way of fixing it for good but I don't see any reason they wouldn't survive because this isn't a new problem. Im sure everyone knows about it by now and it hasn't really drove many away from buying a xbox. These articles seem to be for the angry gamers who are fighting 24/7 about silly things none of us care about. I wish N4G would put these types of articles in another tab so the rest of us who don't give a crap about the console war can filter them out and just read real gaming news...

i think you don't have to be worried about the PS3.

a lot of people i know want to buy a PS3 when LBP hits this month and don't forget that the PS3 is the only system with graphics like MGS4, Uncharted, Motorstorm or LBP.

most of 360's good exclusive games are also on PC.

PS3 is the future.

Let me say I love my xbox 360, but I am on my second soon to be third repair. Instead of MS just "fixing" the 360 and wasting all that time doing it over and over why don't they just give us a coupon for a brand new one!?!?! I mean the newer ones don't seem to be plagued by this issue, so why cant we just get a new one? I hate that they won't admit that no matter what they do, the 360 is not repairable! It cannot be repaired! Either that or they are doing something wrong cause most of my friends are on their 2nd and 3rd too! I love the xbox 360 and the games I have for it. It is the most amazing system I have ever had in my life but its such a headache worrying about it surviving all the time and having to send it back that it's almost not worth it. If I give up on the 360 I wont have anything left but the wii. And as much as I love the wii, it doesnt even compare to the awesomeness of the 360! And no, I do not want a PS3. I am sorry, but the controller on the PS3 sucks and it just wouldnt be the same playing FPS games.

Anyways, I just wish Microsoft would get their sh@t together! THis is what happens when American companies outsource to third world countries to try and save a buck!

This story is flamebait.

Let's see what happens at the end of the year before we jump to conclusions.

Oookay...I'm not defending the 360 or the RROD. Microsoft should have fixed this problem COMPLETELY instead of trying to cover it up but I wouldn't say the 360 won't survive past Christmas, knowing Microsoft.

We'll just have to see what happens.
