Ten Little Xbox 360 Sitting in Their Graves... and Counting

That's right, after a particularly good run Brian Crecente had another Xbox 360 die on him. This time a debug unit.

While the instances of Xbox 360 red rings have certainly dropped, he still heard stories about the console's DVD player giving up the ghost. That's what happened to him in July last year when his last 360 died and that seems to be the case this time around. He was playing the end of LEGO Batman The Videogame when the game paused and a "dirty disc" error popped up on the screen. A few more runs at playing the game allowed him to get a few minutes in before the console crapped out on him again.

Its boggles the mind really, What if SAMSUNG had a HDTV that was known to have defects and breakdowns but instead of replacing it they just keep sending you the same HDTV but a little fixed... People would go ape sh*t.

What REAL electronic consumer lets a company rape them like this.

You paid your 300+ dollars for a gaming system, you are entitled to a class action lawsuit against Microsoft untill they recall all of them and then fix the problem once and for all... but no... you are all mesmerized my Microsofts money too see how you are getting the low end of the stick.

to put it this way: YOU BUY $300 SYSTEM, MICROSOFT GETS YOUR $300, DEVICE BREAKS, MIROSOFT JUST TWEAKS THE INSIDE, SYSTEM BREAKS AGAIN, RINSE AND REPEAT (who wins in the end? Big Business does)

boggles the mind

I would get a 360 if only they'd fix the damn problem. That's why the 360 is bashed like this. Some people are not willing to put down cash for something that's likely to break within months or one year.

Let me add something here...I DO NOT HATE THE 360 COMPLETELY. I just hate the fact that it's been two years, going on three and *yet* you still hear stories about people having issues with the system. I am not fond of Microsoft but they did a better job with the 360. They're trying to be more diverse in their lineup and knowing the original XBox, it was seen as a shooter console.

I am scared until this day to get a 360 because I don't want any problems with it. I don't want to feel as if I wasted my money.

i got my first 360 in April of '06, but had to trade it in by Nov. '06 (financial issues). i got my second one little more than a year ago. neither my first one nor my current one has given me problems; while the 360 has some good games, they aren't THAT good to make me buy/repair the system three or four (let alone ten) times. i seriously hope mine never rrods, because if it does them i might go from a PSwii60 owner to just a PSWii owner. i don't believe in buying faulty products more than once or twice, and at the expense of sounding like a judgemental fanboy, i can't fathom how any gamer, no matter how diehard, would.

For every RROD console, there are others that are working fine after all these years.

There is no doubt the older consoles had issues, but I think the newer ones with the Falcon Motherboard has been improved. These failures are most likely old consoles or refurbished consoles.

There are no excuse from MS for the higher than usual percentage of defect, but they have extended the warranty. As I said before, this is obviously not a business model and MS paid dearly... RROD stories are getting old now though!

@Beavis

Right to the point.

The big problem in old 360 still getting problems is exctly the "still" part. Remember, 360 is about to make its 3rd anniversary and those consoles are still breaking. Who gonna pay for MS's mistakes next year? The constumer.

And to be pretty fair, it's not restrict to old models. After falcon comes i said to my sister that she could indeed give a 360 to my nephew. The damn thing has RRODed on her with 3 months (I personally checked the space for ventilation and teached the kids and her to play it, go through the dashboard - we are brazilians, they don't speak english).

Not saying it's a 360 eclusive problem, I keep seeing PS3s of my web frieds getting BD-unit problems more and more often, but not even near the rate I seen it on 360.

I should have a 360 now, I'm crazy about NG2 and Fable 2 (I bought the original Xbox for Fable 1 and I'm a big fan of action/hack'n'slash games) but I just don't feel it's safe to do so. In fact, by what I have seen in the last 3 months, I would shake a bit before taking a PS3, but I really don't want a Wii now, so I would just make it anyway...

I mean, those consoles cost serious money, MS, Sony and Ninty better make shure those things work properly, that they have the lowest fail rate possible. But MS is the only one I seen giving more warranty still not making anything that would really lower their fails (like recalling or major redesigning).

You are right! It shouldn't be happening, and MS shouldn't be allowed to get away with it! But if Sony got away with it , with the Ps2, I guess we can let MS have a pass as well.

I went through 5 Ps2's cause they kept giving out on me! When the first one gave out on me, I called sony, and they told me to get a box and ship it to Farmington Hills, Michigan. And they would send me a bill for repairs. They said the usual repair bill was about $140. So instead, I just traded it in, took the loss and bought another one, and repeated that cycle several times.

I guess I was mesmerized by Sony's money as well?

I dealt with the problem because I like games. And the Ps2 had the games I wanted to play! So now the 360 has taken the place of the Ps2 in my book. Where it has the games I want to play, and has a technical flaw with it's hardware. I will continue buying a new 360 if I need to, because the overall fact remains..."IT HAS THE GAMES I WANNA PLAY!"

I respect the Ps3 for all it's greatness! But having a reliable console with less than a handful of games "I" want to play is worse that having a console that breaks down, but has alot of games I am interested in!

But that's just how I feel!

What is the mfg date on the back of your unit? Since you dont want to send it in for free replacement (if it is a real RROD issue) then how about giving it to me.

Unless yours is modded or does not really have the RROD then you got nothing to lose by sending it in for repairs. I'll be happy to do it for you.

I always thought that about the PS2, its no wonder the supposed 120 million owners are not buying PS3 in droves, all the PS2 owners already own the PS3 :P

EDIT: @asyouburn, You're right there is a difference. Sony had lawsuits against them before they acted while millions ripped open PS2's mixing and matching parts, tweeking and man handling them to get them to work. I seen PS2 owners with 6 PS2's all over there rooms gutted etc.

dude, i'm not defending sony with this post, but there's a big difference between a laser going bad (ps2) and massive hardware failure (xb360) you can replace a laser in a ps2 yourself and have it run perfect, but you cant fix whats causing rrod. just saying, it makes your posts comparing the two sound kinda dumb. again, i own 360, and i like it, but im on my third. i've only ever had one ps2.

4.4 - @ power of Green, Never Ever Compare The Almighty PS2 with The Trash 360.
- PS2 rules the gaming world when 360 were wearing diapers and PS2 still sells very well. PS2 doesn't need much marketing like the crappy 360. Good product sells by itself!

- PS2 issues were perfectly acceptable by any standard unlike the 33% failure rate of 360.

- SONY engineers were quick to get into action and the issues were fixed in later batches. M$ is still in denial and refuse to fix the hardware problems they themselves created. Perfect example of good leader vs money-sucking leader.

- SONY informs the buyers when they buy refurb units because the refurb units have different colored boxes that clearly state "REFURBISHED". M$ on the other hand takes the RROD units, re-pack them in original 360 boxes and sell them off as "Brand New". M$ is the biggest @assh@le in the gaming community!

As usual POG with his damage control and spin, here is ANOTHER repost that after 5 times STILL hasn't been addressed by "certain" types...

"Funny how some fail to mention the %'s where still within an acceptable industry standard. The only reason why it "seemed" like a lot is because

2-3% of 125 Million is 2.5-3.75 Million ~ PS2

33+% of 20 Million is 6.6 Million+ ~ 360

Now that 33% is also a false number as even MS admitted ALL 360's ARE PRONE TO FAILURE AND ARE DEFECTIVE. Then later they said with the revised MB (twice since then) they would not RROD but they continue to do so! Which means AGAIN that ALL 360's ARE PRONE TO FAILURE AND ARE DEFECTIVE...

http://www.fastsilicon.com/...

http://digg.com/gaming_news...

See, when it's put into PROPER perspective and context others points are totally invalidated. As for Sony charging while MS doesn't, what do you think that Sony charged EVERYONE? Nope. Only those who where outside of their warranty, just like EVERY other company in the world does...unlike MS as they HAD to do it or there would have been a worse class action lawsuit than what Sony had."

4.7 - The PS2 is a console rock!
I still have an original PS2 euro launch model (7 years old). It's still working perfectly though it has been modified a bit with a chip and 160 gig hard drive.

I've always owned a couple of consoles and PCs. I bought an xbox just prior to MS ditching it and we have the 360 with a failure rate that in all honesty should have received a call back it was so badly designed and built.

POG your a joke. But you still represent a large proportion of 360 owners that will eat crap and still insist it is caviar.

Just to clarify something. Look at the growth of the internet and sites like this now as compaired to when the PS2 was having its issues. You can clearly see that the lack of sites to express your grief when the PS2 had failures then are something that didnt exist to the degree that it does now.

the reason the 360 stories are viewed much grander than the PS2 is because of sites like this and the thousands of others glorifying the issues. you didnt have that same level of exposure back 6-7 years ago. So to try and find a link expressing the % of failures is pretty impossible to do given the circumstances.

PS2 had problems and for the most part people knew but it wasnt as widespread information like it is now. does that mean the ratio is the same, maybe...maybe not. We will never truly know the correct numbers now will we. But to be fair it is because of the way news/rumors are spread NOW that information is so much more seceptable to being interpreted in different ways.

On a personal note, not every system covered under warranty is replaced for free. It depends on the nature of the issue. that is why you need to read the fine print. My PS2 I had for less than a year and the drive no longer read the discs. I called sony explaining the situation and it actually COST ME $$ to have it fixed. Now why is that? You would think it would be covered if within the first year but I just didnt read the fine print. Some things are covered and some are not.

Darth makes some really good points.

Obviously Sony didn't admit to a problem. Either did MS. But they did pay people off.
And it's "I couldn't care less" as in "There is no way that I could care less than I do".

Juuken...
There's no way that the PS2 had the failure rates of the 360. Not even close. But all companies make mistakes and implying that the PS2 didn't have huge issues in the beginning is simply not true. Sony fixed the problem and recovered nicely...I think the 360 can do the same. Not on the scale of the PS2 but I think it will do nicely this generation, firmly placing it in 2nd.

Not that it matters though...it's all about the games.

Normally I would be against you POG, but seeing as this is from Kotaku, it's just another delicious flamebait article to stir up internet traffic for their delicious ad-revenue.

RRoDs rates have come down significantly; I know since I've worked on fixing those boxes for a living for a time. I started noticing less 360s coming in after the Zephyr boards, and even less after the Falcon boards. I'm not saying that Microsoft doesn't have a inherent hardware defect, but I am saying that work is "kinda" being done to fix the RRoDs. I don't approve of band-aid fixes, but I will say that most 360s I've received for work, are mostly launch-06 units without the additional heatsink and lead-free solder. It's really a love-hate relationship for me, however these RRoD articles are getting silly and outdated.

For all we know, the guy might've been an idiot and neglected his 360s by leaving them in the dustbin.

You are correct in that the 3yr warranty ends for those with Nov05 systems. just as it will end in December for those with Dec05 and it will end in Jan09 for those with Jan06 systems. See where I am going with this?

Someone who has an Apr08 system is covered for 3 years from MFG date. So that means theirs is good until Apr11. I would like to have had an newly extended warranty when I got my Dec05 system back. I sent it in for repair in Jul 07 and got it back 3 weeks later.

If something happens again before Dec08 I am covered but if it happens after and they have record of repairing it in 07 then they SHOULD offer to repair it no cost. Even though it is past the MFG date because I technically would only have had it back since Aug 07.
