Gears of War sold out in Japan

Gears of War, released last week in Japan in a shocking turn of events has sold out across the country! Despite a high score from the highly acclaimed Famitsu most analyst were certain that Gears of War, which is a western title would not do very well in the anti FPS country of Japan. The demo has drawn crowds throughout stores across Japan and Microsoft now has to scramble to restock store shelves. Will Gears of War help Microsoft win the war in Japan? Highly doubtful but it is a step in the right direction for Microsoft and the Xbox in Japan.

I wouldn't have guessed that the Japanese liked this type of game. Shows what I know! I think the fact that it is selling at all is big news.

Gotta hand it to MS. They are (very) slowly gaining ground in Japan - perseverence pays! This is good for us in the US as Japanese developers will continue to develop for the 360.

13.1 - I understand what you saying.

This is one of the problems; people see Japanese gaming and think FF and Mario (I didn’t say you jkbonafide this isn’t an attack). Some people don’t realize there is a more adult and darker side to gaming in Japan. The only area I can think of that Japan is slow to jump on is shooters and with games like Lost Planet and Resident Evil 4 there starting to understand. This isn’t too surprising Clify B did state that he used Resident Evil 4 as inspiration for GOW. Price of Persia isn’t really to different from Ninja Gaiden both play very similar and there just as violent as the other.

...that there is not single formula for a successful game in Japan, or any particular region for that matter.

MSFT poured money into Mistwalker and Blue Dragon b/c RPGs are generally popular in Japan, but it doesn't mean a non-RPG can't be successful. Gears moved units and consoles b/c it was a great game overall. When a title is that good, beautiful and fun, it should have an element of mass appeal.

Either that, or everybody just loves Cole Train!

It really bugs me that this game isn't demoed in the U.S., sure it's gory. But all you have to do is turn the extreme content off. I went to Best Buy the other day and saw Resistance in HDTV, the game doesn't even look better than Gears in SD

N4G needs to start selling boxes of tissue to Sony fans, they would be rich. The boxes of tissue would sell more then the PS3 in a week. They could call it PS3 tissue 1.5 the box of sorrow, lies and a $600 dollar Blu-Ray player and we will advertise it as a gaming machine with no games(Rumble WTF is that?). It’s to bad you cant look to your PS3 friends on the PSN to help with your sadness, hey good luck on even finding your friends on the PSN. LOL just felt like rubbing all that sh!t in.

20 - What should not be forgotten

If Microsoft really only put 30,000 pieces on sale, then those selling out are only a sign that the careful estimates were too low and that there is a certain type of gamer that would want to get and try GOW. It does not NECESSARILY mean that it would sell out given a huge quantity. It's a good start though and makes you feel curious about their real potential there.

Another thing: Please stop referring to the Japanese as polite little cute folk who don't like blood. Really, come over here and see for yourselves. The Western view on the Japanese is so far off the mark, it's ridiculous.
