Cryptic 'definitely interested' in PS3 Champions Online

Speaking during a presentation to press at Leipzig Games Conference last month, Cryptic designer Aaron Safronoff said that the studio "would like to deliver the game to as many platforms" as possible.

When asked why there is no PS3 version planned, Safronoff replied: "The PS3 version is something we're definitely interested in. But as far as that launch time it will just be those two. As far as any specific reason why we haven't done it yet, I actually don't know that answer. But as far as time is concerned, we were already built in. We wanted to do the 360 and PC right away. Basically that was the quickest transition for us to get a game on the market."

He added: "We are certainly looking into it, absolutely. We would like to deliver the game to as many platforms as we possibly could."

1 - Well.....
They do say the PS3 will be the "Home" of MMOs.

"Home" will help that out lots.

Wow, i thought the title was talking about Champions of Norrath or something... it'd be nice to have another one especially a good online one that may be able to rival Diablo.

2 - Oh my
If this is released on the PS3, it will have to face tough competition. MMOs on consoles are still emergent and don't have a strong foothold in the console market yet. The Agency and DC Universe MMO are set to change that, but judging from the quality(of games already released by then) and time it would take to see
Champions Online on the PS3, it will be very tough for them.

The console market is still hermetic to new genres and I doubt the infrastructure on Live or PSN is strong enough yet to see a boom in this genre immediately.

3 - All it takes is one GOOD...
...MMO on the console side for the genre to get a stable foothold in the market thereby allowing other MMOs to take off. So on the PSN side The Agency and DC online could be those MMOs that branch out and grow the market for the PS3. For now PSN has Warhawk and LIVE has FFXI so those games are step towards developing the market for the respective systems.

I agree with Harry on the LIVE/PSN infrastructure argument although I feel that both networks will be able to handle the MMOs fully once they are a bit more common. Finally the pay to play ideology common to PC MMOs may be the limiting factor for console MMOs. MMOs on console will have to totally rock your socks all the way off into the other room if they want people to pay to play and remain competitive.

I believe that MMO will kick off on console once developer will allow use of keyboard and mouse. PS3 supports keyboard and mouse HINT HINT.

4 - Unless they are free,
I cannot see how more than 1-2 MMOs would work for any platform, people already spend alot of time on ONE MMO's which takes up all their time, who will bother paying for another? Unless u r really that crazy with that much time on your hand (so time consuming, i will never play another one after FF11) I can't see more than 1-2 MMOs work at the same time unless they are free or radically different.

That's assuming not everyone will play a specific type of MMO, of course.

LOL

if it was the reverse people would be screaming "Ha sony looses another exclusive"

if this does make it to the ps3 or at least a solid "Yes its in development"

there goes 360's competition for dc universe..

very good news, cause aside from left 4 dead, champions online was another title i would like to get my hands on

the thing about MMO's is that you can't just make a great MMO.. it takes trial and error from different companies..

its not like a shooter where either people like it or they dont

you the gamer and many gamers have to invest time, effort, thought, research, get deep into the story and leveling of your character before you decide if its any good...

even while everquest II was slowing down, it was yet to be dethroned until WoW came out

before world of warcraft it was all about evercrack, not even city of heroes could take EQ2's title..

more mmo's released means more chances that one or maybe two will stick

now i just need an official word from NCSoft that Blade and Soul is coming to ps3 i'm all set

6 - i've been following
Champions Online since it was released.

i'd really love a PS3 version, as i'd hate to have to pay for LIVE, as well as a subscription for the game (if it does, indeed have a subscription).

the DCUniverse MMO had my interest because it was the only super hero MMO coming to the PS3 anytime soon. it looks cool, but i'm not a big fan of the DCU in the first place (please god, let Sony just snag the Marvel MMO rights already).

i'd much prefer to tool around in an original universe, instead of a tried and true mainstream comic universe; less rules of conduct in an original universe; for example, Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, the JLA, and the Avengers have a set example they must set, being the icons they are for DC and Marvel, respectively. characters MUST behave appropriately; so no Superman using his abilities to destroy the game world.

i'll continue to follow Champions Online, and hopefully it will end up on the PS3, and do away with a subscription based service (i want ALL console MMO's to do away with subscriptions, honestly).

well thing is champion online is still an existing universe , unlike what Cryptic did with City of heroes .

6.2 - yeah, i know it's based off of
a tabletop RPG,

but in my mind, it doesn't have household name characters like Superman, Batman, Spider-Man that that have to adhere to a strict set of universe rules like DC and Marvel have.

there's more freedom to play around with the world. you'd never see Batman cursing people out and killing them, but in an original universe, the gameplay can be broader.

i guarantee that DCU will either be rated T for Teen, or E for Everyone.

now, i don't want it to seem like i want my MMOs to be full of T&A and Blood and Gore, but if i make a villain, i want to do villainous things (within reason, of course). i don't know if Marvel or DC would let game developers "taint" their world by inviting controversy from the mainstream press.

7 - whoa whoa whoa hold on!!!!!
whoa hold on!! the ps3 has a superhero game called DC online they don't need another superhero mmo game. that dosen't make any sense why to have 1 mmo that is exclusive and one thats for the ps3 and 360 this is why 360 is lacking exclusives. if i was them i just put champions online only for the 360 and pc. just to make it even. for both ps3 and 360.

7.1 - hey,
why have more than one of ANY game?!

i totally would only one one type of action/adventure game, rpg, fps, strategy game, survival horror game, puzzle game, music rhythm game, or sports game!

i mean, it's not like people have different tastes and views on anything, or that maybe, just maybe, there are people that DON'T LIKE the DC Universe and having another superhero alternative would be good for them. /sarcasm.

the more the merrier.

what is with gamers these days only seeming to tolerate ONE SERIES at a time, when competition forcing them to improve and better what they have?

why do people hate on Uncharted but love Tomb Raider, and vice versa? why do they have to compete? why can't people just enjoy both, or one or the other in peace?

Champions Online, if it does land on the PS3, will be a welcome addition to the "superhero MMO genre," of which only City Of Heroes is available now, and after having played that game since it launched, i can say that it's lacking. severely. some developer competition will hopefully do wonders for that game, as well as the new titles.

i like choice and variety.

i'm no sports fan, but i can imagine that there are a LOT of football fans out there that would like to see what another developer could do with the NFL license, but alas, EA has it on lock down.

i mean, is that what you want? developers like EA and Activision holding the reins of the industry, churning out one mediocre title after the other.

i can't say if Champions will be good or not. just like i can't say that DCUO will be good or not, but at least, if one isn't, and one is, i'll have the choice, instead of being forced to play only ONE because it's the only one available, and i LOVE the superhero genre.

it already happened with City of Heroes/Villains. it's been the only superhero MMO on the market, and it's certainly not doing the genre any favors (although, it has possibly the best character creation i've EVER seen in a game in terms of variety of options and customizability over your character. i don't think i've ever seen two characters that looked alike in COH/V; barring DC/Marvel copycats, of course).

Late ? Hum champion online is still "to be released" , AOC 360 is nowhere to be found yet , and will unlikely take time to appears or even get cancelled given how the PC game isnt even stable and frankly good .

If anything , its one area Sony is definitely ahead right now .

i think there is to be a redesign of how mmo's charge..

it makes people feel better about monthly fees and tries to combat in game farming for the purpose of online sale of in game money

"Legal Real Money Transactions"

may open a door to solving monthly fees

the problem every company is facing is do you charge the pc and not the console? do you not charge both? charge both? how much?

i think mmo's in general want to avoid a situation where xbox live pays a fee but windows live does not..

i think a $5 monthly fee is fine...

given how many people keep getting charged for DLCs , and those becoming more and more outrageous in nature and cost (scamco anyone ?) i think that some people are overestimating people's resistance to the idea of paying for a console MMO .

Not to mention a big precedent , Final Fantasy XI , no matter how you look at it , a success on ps2 ... and then pc .
