Microsoft Confident of Second Place Finish This Gen

Don Mattrick, senior vice-president of Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business, has said he expects the Xbox 360 to secure second place in the current generation console war.

"We will sell more consoles this generation than Sony," Mattrick told Business Week.

He made the comments as Microsoft announced it was slashing the price of all three of its Xbox 360 models in the US, having recently done so in Japan also. As a result of the move, the entry level Xbox 360 Arcade is now priced at $199, making it the cheapest of the current generation of consoles on the market.

Facts:

MS is losing ground in every territory to Sony every month currently.

Sony's has some big hitters coming out in the next 6 months
LBP , Resistance 2, Motorstorm 2, Killzone 2, Home, and Socom.

MS will get a bump with the price cut and with Gears 2, Fable 2 and Banjo could win this holiday season.

For the future Microsoft's big titles are Alan Wake, Forza 3, Mass Effect 2, Halo Wars and Ninja Blade.

For the future Sony offers some big titles such as M.A.G, God of War 3, Twisted Metal 3, Heavy Rain, Eye Pet, Gran Turismo 5, Infamous, LA Noire, Final Fantasy XIII Versus and the next Team Ico project.

TGS will be the most exciting show of the year. Both MS and Sony will show what cards they have left under their sleeves.

Blu-Ray sales continue to grow which favors PS3.

A lot of huge PS2 titles will get there first versions released on PS3 soon which favors the PS3.

I don't know that the cost of Xbox Live is really that much of a factor in people's decisions to buy one. In other words I don't think that eliminating the cost would help Microsoft move more hardware. It would however remove a large portion of their revenue (in that division) so I don't see that being very likely.

2nd place after the PS3. On Amazon the $199 Arcade is ranked #25 and the 80gb PS3 is #7. Not even a price drop can get the 360 in the top 10 again. With the PS3 all they had to do was introduce a new sku and they have been in the top 10 for months! 2nd place my ass 360 will be 3rd no matter what this generation unless they make the system $50.

You 360 zealots failed to give a reason why they will be 2nd this generation. If software is not the answer and price is not the answer then what else is there. In 2007 Halo 3 did not get you there and now at $200 still nothing.

Total potential sales is a function of desirability quotient. The market has made it clear that this is how the consoles rank:

1) Wii
2) PS3
3) 360

Price determines how quickly and how close a product comes to fulfilling it's total potential sales.

By dropping the price of the 360, Microsoft isn't increasing the 360's appeal relative to the competition. It's simply cashing in it's chips early for the sake of a short-term increase in marketshare.

I don't know about LA Noire. That one mught be multi-platform. You also forgot to include Lips where you can sing to your own music and You're in the Movies. I purchased a Live Vision camera right after I heard about that game. Looks like a lot of fun. I do believe that sony has a stronger 09 lineup as they are still focusing on the ps3 as they have dumped A LOT of money into cell, blu-ray (paying off the movie studios) and the rsx. they will be using the ps3 for awhile so there software will be stronger for the times to come. I think that is one of the reasons why they are focusing on first party because they know that when MS and Nintendo release their follow up,
A. They won't be able to do the same at that time
B. Most if not all of the 3rd party developers will flaunt their biggest projects on the new machines.

Actually, you don't have to wait, the 360 is deeply outsold by the PS3 everywhere including NA, so there's no doubt anymore the PS3 will surpass the 360 install base soon.

There are a couple 3rd party controllers for the PS3 that have similar tension that the 360 controller has. I just purchased a Logitech Precision Wireless PS3 Game Pad 940-000018 and it's awesome for shooters. The hand grips are ergo, thumb sticks are shorter and they have more tension then the DS3. Look into them if you are serious about possibly picking up a PS3.

Which one has a handle in all three console platforms? You know, handhelds, casual games and hardcore games.

I'll give you a hint, it's not Microsoft and it's not Nintendo. Take a guess, I dare ya.

The one with the most consoles sold wins... As silly as that sounds, it seems to be what wins the "console war". With that in mind, since the PS2 and the Wii are so similar, I would still have my money on the PS2 since it does have an install base of about 125 million and growing.

I'll take a company with support for all platforms over two others with support for only one, or at least in Ninty's case, two.

From a tech perspective the PS3 and the 360 are the only ThisGen consoles, the Wii is a redressed GameCube with a motion sensetive wiibrator.

Based on that MS is right, out of 2, they will get the second place, in other words, the last place.

Seriously if the price drop won't save the box, nothing will. The price drop is just preparing the customers for November, when their 3 year warranty will expire and they are starring at 3 red lights and a stack of games next to it. This just makes the decision whether or not to buy a new one easier or... harder. Depends on the point of view. If you don't want to sell the games you own and rather keep playing them, you might consider rebuying. If you don't want to go through that RROD hell again you may still be unconcerned about it.

Not to mention GeOW2 will come out around the same time...

You have a problem with your statement, Sony may have 10 year in the console market, but PS1 gave the N64 a run for their money the first time in the market, and PS2 pretty much destroy the competition on every level.

M$ has been in the console market for two generations now, and i understand to be some troubles on the first one, but the second one????? Unacceptable, they were rookies on the first one, the second is just poor planing and lack of commitment to the costumer.

Just the fact that they release a broken console on the market, and not calling them back is just proof of how poor M$ thinks of its costumer.

Does Microsoft think consumers are *that* stupid to just blindly buy a 360 without doing research first? I'm not a blind consumer because I did plenty of research before I bought my next-gen console.

Xbox owners and microsoft play on the fact that figures are always misleading, and the figures don't take into account how many of those xbox's are sales customers have bought after getting fed up with the RROD and getting an elite (which didn't solve the problem) etc. You're system is quite frankly rediculously cheap now and you can't touch us in sales. And if cheap people are willing to pay for the abomination that is the 360 do you really think they're willing to fork out for Live? I live in the UK and mostly everyone has/wants a PS3......nobody wants a 360. My brother has one that's got the RROD now and he can't get it replaced, he know hates MS with a passion. This is commonplace throughout the globe. And you think you can secure first place out of the true nextgen consoles? laughable, the console is a joke, MS are a joke and the customers that use them are suckers.

who broke console sales records? who came in and destroyed any and all competition? who outsold the direct competition last year even with the "perfect storm"? who outsold the direct compettion all this year? who put sega out of the console business? who forced nintendo to go so casual? who has close to 300 million total brand units sold? someone with those kinds of accomplishments doesn't sound like a 3rd place standing to me, more like a King of the Mountain.

people like to argue about sales numbers between micro and sony, so chew on 300 million of them.

360 is crushed worldwide in sales by the PS3, week after week.

Heck, your console sold only 3k in Japan last week, it seems even more dead than the Dreamcast now.

so here's what's gonna happen...crazy mattrick is gonna drop another system in 2-4 years and then go "ok ok the gen is over now...we beat u" and the xbutts will rejoice......but the gen isn't over until either 1. the company stops producing/supporting the system or 2. the other 2 systems have had the same life span (ps3/wii) as the 360......only that makes sense...they won't outsell the ps3 no way in hell.....but u know what'll happen right?.........."but don.......u guys lost to sony"............"do n: wait...u thought i meant worldwide?......i meant in america only....sheesh u guys don't listen."

MS will announce the next gen of gaming. In 2010 they will bring out a new xbox

Yeah, I think they'll try that, since it's lost for the 360, but it won't work at all either, since their fan base won't accept they abandon them once again, like they did with Xbox 1.

hat's the reason why MS strategy is so stupid and hopeless : since they have nearly no 1st/2nd party developers, they have to rely on 3rd party support and so they can't launch their consoles when they want, like Sony always did...
