Left 4 Dead to be Cut Scene Free

Kotaku writes:
"Left 4 Dead is very much a zombie apocalypse game, you'll find no deeper meaning here, no Romero-esque political message.

The game opens on the game's four characters at ground zero two weeks after the rise of the zombies. Left 4 Dead will have a short introduction, created by the team behind the Team Fortress 2 cut-scenes, but that will be the only cut scene gamers will see in Left 4 Dead."

don't talk trash about MGS4 - it's one of the best games ever created with at least 12 - 15 hours of gameplay. the cutscenes are more entertaining than in any game you've ever played before plus the story is 100% intriguing. you can play the game a hundred times and it can be always different. the textures are the best ever seen on a console and the music and sound are breathtaking. when you sneak around the battlefield the atmosphere feels like you're in a real war movie.

i feel sorry for you - you will never play one of the greatest games of all time. this is a game like Ocarina of Time or Mario 64. Groundbreaking!!!

idiot.

edit: and you would love Metal Gear Online

1.6 - How many cutscenes did Braid have?
It was near perfect and didn't need cutscenes. Although MGS4 was perfect in the way the stolen earth was a perfect doctor who episode ( made for fans) cut scenes are not the only way to advance the story.

I agree that they aren't the only way. But they are the most effective in my opinion. I played Half Life 2 and Portal and another game who's name escapes my mind that did all the "storytelling" in game. You know what, it didn't work that good. Besides maybe Portal which was still light on story and needed a voice actress for Chell. Though i do like what Dues Ex did with story telling by having conversations with people, reading books and hacking computers you figure out more and more.

Half-Life series (also made by Valve) has an amazing story, but no cutscenes. So cutscenes do not equal great game.

The game will be awesome.

Cutscenes are ok in games you have no direct control over one single character (like strategy or party-rpgs). But in ego-shooters and the like, they create an unnecessary detachement from your alter ego, and that's usually not good. Half-life is a good example for games (largely) without cutscenes, but it suffered from frequent loading-screens, which were even worse in terms of "flow"-breaking.

ya i agree the story never compelled me to want it, its like Counter Strike, make your own story up lol, it shows that it does not need a story to have a great game and well valve is good at what they do

It doesn't matter what you want:

"'You're gong to play a map 50 to 100 times so we can be more subtle,' he said."

You are going to be forced to play it a lot of times, apparently. xD

So what, there wasn't any cut scenes in Half life too, although I don't expect this game to be of the caliber as Half life.

This wasn't meant to have a super serious story-line.

But it's there for those who really strive for one.

10 - this is a good thing
cut scenes could cut down on the action in the game also this way they can fit more gameplay on the discs less wasted space more gameplay is always a good thing

Apparntly its still about 8hrs long so wheres the gameplay?

I could be wrong about length of the game
Shut this user up Let user speak
Dzpool - 478 days 9 hours ago
10.2 - but this way they could
possibly add extra multiplayer game modes maybe even add more to the length of the game i really don't care for cut scenes i usually skip them in most games when its possiible

8 hours long? What?

That doesn't make any sense. This isn't a single player game, this is a multiplayer coop game. You can't measure the 'length' of a single playthrough, because there's no clear beginning and end to any multiplayer game.

Co-op games don't have any length!? Since when? Hell, I must've been doing it wrong all these years...

Maybe for a game like Halo, where there's a definite beginning and end. But each level is a self-contained scenario, just like in Team Fortress 2 or CS:S or whatever other multiplayer FPS you want to reference. It's not a game with a story that has a clear beginning, middle, and end; the progression is from one game to the next, but they're each their own game. They're not linked.

Is that clearer?

this is good news because 360 gamers think cutscenes are pretty lame and boring

if they port to ps3 they prob need to add cut scenes because ps3 fans like games with more cut scenes than gameplay

maybe this is one reason why valve didn't port to ps3? they knew they would have to do cut scenes for that system

for me a good story is almost essential for the singleplayer aspect. gives me a reason to get to the next level and finish the game. gameplay is simply not enough to satisfy me, maybe is it for some other easily satified ppl.

Halo trilogy, MGS series, Bioshock, GTA series, Gears, Mass Effect, KotOR, all are games which have a great story and dialogue, and without their great stories they wouldnt be the games they are. Weve seen fantastic stories done in zombie flicks, like 28 days later, dawn of the dead, etc, so quit being lazy and use your mind to craft a good story for Left 4 Dead wtf

Well who says this game WONT have a okay story for singleplayer.. Look at Bioshock which you stated... that had what just a few cutscenes in the Whole game... the only 2 i remeber were at the very end when you meet ryan and the last cutscene... still was an awesome game... but its the multiplayer im looking foward to

13 - not sure
how well this will play out. im really, really, really looking forward to Left 4 Dead ( love anything with zombies) and while i understand that if they leave out cut scenes then it will be non stop shooting. but is non stop shooting (for an entire game) a good thing or a bad thing? i guess i'll find out in november.

Another stab at MGS4. Does this happen a lot on N4G? I thought this was the Gamer Zone, a place where people can discuss great games regardless of what console it's on.

Seriously, that's obvious. Online centric games usually don't have a lot of cut scenes, if any.
