Review of Mercenaries 2 in OPM

I'll give this one a rental and see how it plays out. I loved the first one on my PS2 (played it all the time), so it's nice to see them bringing it into the next-gen. It's a shame they didn't do more with the gameplay, but the basic formula is still fun so I know i'll at least get some enjoyment out of it.

Plus the nuclear bomb is worth the little bit of time spent with the game in itself!

Reading the review, it sounds a bit like the reviewer was tired of playing games as a whole (rushing to meet review deadlines, not really playing for fun). Several places it says things like it's a lot of fun, undeniable joy... but in the end the score is low because it's too familiar and repetitive... You just said earlier you had fun, isn't that the point of gaming? People like that just need to step away from gaming for a while, go play any sport (like tennis, how repetitive and familiar is that?) and then come back to gaming later and refreshed.

While I loved the first one, at the same time I did get bored with it. Shoot shoot, strafe strafe, blow up buildings, repeat. There's just not a whole lot of story or much to do...
I may still get this one though. I love the commercial so goddamn much!

When we first seen this game it looked pretty awesome but now that we have seen games like gears of war 2, killzone 2, resistance 2, and fallout 3, this game doesnt look so hot anymore. Looks like it will be fun but I think im happy with BF2 for now.

This is only one review. And so what if it's a seven? I still can't believw how fvcked up this industry has become that a 7 out of 10 is bad. Mathematically, it is above average. People need to just relax about this AAA bullsh1t. Not every game has to be a 9 or a 10 for it to be good. Besides it's not even an exclusive. It's probably a good game, just not a great game. Sometimes good enough is just that: good enough.

EDIT: Wow. I had no idea I was that popular to where I get disagrees for saying people need to calm down about reviews, especially on a multiplatform game.

i bought it last night (PS3 version), and here are my opinions after playing for about two hours. this is by no means a comprehensive assessment of the game, as i'm still at early stages.

Graphics: 7.5/10. if this game had been released last year, it would have looked GREAT. it's in the same boat as HAZE, visually; the graphics are good, and clean, but dated. that year delay for Mercenaries 2 probably helped with tweaking the gameplay, but at the expense of the visuals. explosions look really good, but character animations, especially in cutscenes, are incredibly stiff and last generation. maybe i'm spoiled by games like Uncharted and Heavenly Sword, even GTAIV had more believable animations. i think a more stylized look would have helped this game, (somewhere between Team Fortress and Bioshock would have been nice), instead of trying to go for realism. also, the game has one of the coolest start menu screens i've seen in a long time. it just oozes style. if i have to give EA credit for one thing, it's their GUI screens. they always have polish (see, Burnout Paradise, Fight Night Round 3, etc).

Controls: 8/10: the controls are responsive, and i haven't tweaked the settings, so i'm only playing on default. aiming is good in vehicles like tanks, and a little loose with guns. granted i haven't used many guns, and there's a bit of an auto-assist going on to help out. once again, i haven't tweaked any controls, so i'm not completely condemning them. let me put it this way; when i died in the game, it was MY fault, not the controls (i've only died twice, so far).

Story: 8/10: so far, i'm digging the story more than the first, as it's a classic revenge tale, and i don't know, there's just something compelling about being wronged, then exacting your revenge by killing as many people as possible. voice acting is very good, dialogue is decent. no complaints so far, but again, i'm only two hours into the game.

Gameplay: 8.5/10: the big one. if you like Mercs 1, you will like Mercs 2. so far, gameplay has remained fundamentally the same with the exception of being able to set fire to your surroundings, and blow up a nice number of buildings and homes. Venezuela is huge, but i haven't had much time to explore as i've been doing missions. speaking of, missions are in the same format as the last game; you meet a contact, and do jobs for them. being a Merc, you can ally with whomever you want, but if you want to keep all your contacts happy, you will have to find that balance between helping out rival contacts that keep both parties in your good graces. driving, shooting, making things go boom still has that Mercenaries charm, so i have no complaints here yet. since i plan on playing more of it over this weekend, i'll have a better opinion of the game by Monday.

Overall: 8/10 (this IS an average)

i loved the first Mercenaries, and besides the feeling of de ja vu (many of the sound effects, like accessing the PDA, and selecting support are identical to the first), i'm enjoying the first one. it doesn't have that "next gen" polish, but it's certainly fun, and clearly made for the fans.

i haven't played co-op yet (naturally, since the game hasn't released yet, and my local gaming store got the game early), as no one on my friend's list has it yet, so those impressions will have to wait until Monday as well.

so far, i'd recommend it, based off of your enjoyment of the first.

Reviewer merely offer their opinion on games. Most non-gamers who own a PS3/360 rather play a movie based video game or Madden. Anyway, do you like blowing stuff up? Do you like shooting at people and driving tanks? Well this game might be for you. I stopped relying on reviews after middle school. Rent the damn game, and have your own opinions.
