Microsoft Lands Force Feedback Payout

San Jose's Immersion Corp., purveyor of all things force feedback, said Tuesday that it will pay Microsoft $21 million to settle litigation that cropped up in June last year, a legal web which also involved Sony.

Now that the Microsoft and Immersion have come to terms, Immersion will become part of Microsoft's Certified Partner Program.

Immersion's settlement will be a one-time payment for the full amount. Additional terms of the settlement are confidential.

I think you are confused (as I was when I first read the story on EDGE). Immersion is the one paying MS, not the other way around. Hope that clears things up for you.

I think Immersion was asking for $1 per console. 120 million from Sony 25 million from MS. Microsoft settled for the 25 million, Sony took it to court and ended up having to pay anyway.

Some seriously slick legal work by MS to get that clause in the settlement. Can't believe Immersion agreed to pay MS, and from Sony's money no less.

I wonder why they never went after Nintendo?

4 - Wow, this is taxing my memory....
Microsoft settled the lawsuit against them with Immersion and also bought into the company. Part of the settlement entitled Microsoft to part of the settlement from Sony if it reached a certain amount. I forget the amount, but Immersion settled with Sony for a cash amount just under the amount that would have entitled Microsoft to part of the settlement. Immersion also received non-monetary damages that brought the amount of the settlement over the previously agreed amount with Microsoft and that is where the issue was. Basically Immersion was trying to pull a fast one and it didn't work.

6 - That's bizarre.
Sony settled with Immersion, Microsoft bought 10% of Immersion's stock, and then Immersion paid Microsoft to settle a lawsuit with them that Immersion started?

I believe this is what they term in the industry as "owned". You go to sue a company for some BS patent infringement, and you end up paying THEM. Frigging awesome. I hate MS, but they have my respect on this one.

10 - And the truth is kinda revealed...
for the record, didn't they hit Immersion with this lawsuit right after they settled with Sony? As if you needed any more proof of who was REALLY responsible...
