X08: Gears 2 DLC to ship 'soon' after game release

More and more games might require DLC soon after release due to time constraints, or limited areas. Personally, I dont see a problem with it, so long as its free. If they decide to charge for a few more maps or playlists so soon after the game dropping, it would shed some light on the practice of purposely limiting game design to nickel and dime people into buying more. I think it'll be free. In fact, it might just be a patch like Kill Zone 2's patch.

I understand what you're trying to say, but hear me out. I don't care for this war really, although I'll poke fun at the obvious fanboys (you know who you are), but logically speaking, if its so soon after release, it might actually be that they left some things out due to limitations of space, or lack of time to tackle a situation and make sure it works properly. It would suck BIG time if they did charge for anything, but since they say its multiplayer related, I'm just hoping they don't charge...at least not so soon after release. I personally won't be getting Gears 2, but for all those who want the game and enjoy the series, it would be a kick in the nut.

1.3 - I don't get the point of DLC. I do see the point of improving obvious flaw or something.
like the camera angle, but DLC is just DLC, it just works for games that people really wanna play. Other games, i don't see the point.

1.5 - You missed something.
Additions to the single player should not be added through DLC. Years from now when the DLC servers are down you may want to play the game again, and you can do so without the DLC, but if you need to redownload something, and the servers are down, then your screwed.

Now, the exception is what this is, multilayer based DLC. Because if the multilayer based DLC ever goes unhosted, then the online servers are likely off line too, and the game can no longer be played online anyways, so what does it matter.

I prefer knowing I have everything needed on the disk to fire it up 10 years latter and replay the game.

@1.5

Well even to this day all Xbox1 servers are still open for DLC. No one really goes over there and they are still yet to shut them down!

Yet MS has closed afew doors for some Arcade titles, but they are still open for DL if you owned it before it closed. They aint gone really. Just not up on the main pages for someone new to DL.

What a way to get some money. Just put them on the disc, if it fits of course.

With it being so close to the release, there is no reason to give it away free, unless they want to reward all of us that bought it. I would think they are striking while most of us have beaten the game and want more NOW.

Disk space lacking on DVD9. Having DLC gives them the ability to charge extra.

You mean like KZ2? I'm not saying that you'll be paying for KZ2 DLC but there's obviously enough room...

The DLC with Killzone 2 isn't because of space or the desire to charge. Here is an explanation taken from a different post I made:

Killzone 2 ships 2/24 of 2009. Now back off that 3 weeks for production and shipping. You are at 2/03. Now back off that 2, probably 3 weeks for Sony's final QA. Now you are at 1/14. Look at everything else for the prior month as last minute polish. That puts them just before Christmas around the 10th because there will be some Holiday downtime. Yhe game will be complete at that stage. Major features have to be locked no more less than 3 months out. That sets them right around September 10th for major features in and locked.

The game has to be over 85-90% complete at this point because programming and engineering have to tighten everything at then so the bug hunting can begin and gameplay balancing can occur. They will have to adjust weapons capabilities, tweak AI, move AI, toughen them, weaken them whatever is necessary. Possibly shift level items here and there. At the same time MP game balancing is occurring. Also the sound - which is often behind, this includes the V/O - is still being engineered.

So if this decision was only made in the last month, Sony would jeopardize a 25 million dollar plus project because they would have to design, build, program and engineer a major game feature, and slam it into the game ready for testing in less than 2 months. A game feature that if not up to par with the rest of the game could be damning.

It's likely to be 90 days after launch before we see Coop implemented. It will depend on to what depth they are taking it.

Sony has a bigger history of making DLC free. Killzone 2 is a first party game whereas Gears 2 is not. Remember the fiasco last time with Gears 1?

Also, with Killzone 2 it isn't a matter of MP maps or game types but download containing a serious piece of engineering to allow a new game MODE. It requires more than just making it possible for a second person to appear in the SP game but will also require re-engineering friendly and enemy AI as well as reconstructing cutscenes. There are items like designing and instituting the respawing, engineering and programming the online mechanism to allow joining (either pregame join or drop in drop out), programming for game menus ans smaller things like static art, etc. It is a very big deal.

Why not just put it in the game then? This is the problem with DLC. Developers see it as an opportunity to make some more money on features that would have been included in the game otherwise. Prime example - Metal Gear Online. I mean, come on Konami. You even put the GENE expansion maps in the trailers before the release of MGO.

I didn't think of disk space issue at all. My first thought was that they are done with the game and are already making more content. The game is shipping with 10+ maps, so kudos to Epic.

DLC, gamer pics etc.. should be free on LIVE. Seriously, we already pay for Live (it's a very good service and all; the best at the moment) and that should be enough to make all theses things free.

plus there's Ads on LIVE!

The only reason I can think of is that their avatars are 2D so paying for pictures will cost you. For the background I think it's just the design of the dashboard requiring more time than usual so they want money.

In the end Microsoft will charge for almost anything and people will believe that it's quality, even if it isn't.

10 - Exactly
We have yet to play the game or get an idea of what kind of maps we will be playing on...I mean 10 is a damn good number. Why do people just jump to conclusions and hate? Besides if it is coming soon after it could be a bunch of things, and yes I believe they are working on content and refining the game as we speak. Gears 2 is going to rock out, and paying for the content may not be great, but at least it will for a title that actually returns the value...

Be a gamer...Not a hater

11 - KingME recently said in the Killzone 2 DLC article comments:
"Quite amazing how people can see things in a good light when they are a believer. I don't see it as a reward. I see it as, 'thanks for your 60 bucks for the unfinished game. However, we are fixing it now so instead of playing it right away, *cough* well, you will have to wait 30 minutes or so for the patch to finish before you can play. Have a nice day.

P.S. thanks again for the cash.'"

;)

Now as for my thoughts on this... having to pay doesn't make me so happy... but hopefully the price will be reasonable. It really SHOULD be free I think but since it doesn't look like that will be the case I simply hope that it's worth the price and is a 'beefy' addition.

11.1 - Oh buddy
I was just copying that exact quote. It is quite amazing how they (the 360 only crowd) like to bring disorder to a great conversation, then not a couple of hours later, this drops and throws it right in their face. At least Sony is not going to charge for the KZ2 update as the creators have already confirmed it to be free, lets see what Microsoft does with this. Considering they love to charge for any little DLC and the boading words from above "No details about pricing are yet available", so KingME, you seem to be absent in this discussion, what are your feelings towards MS on this?

12 - I don't mean to sound typical...
When hearing about Gears of War 2 it didn't have the same thunder it once did when first announced. After seeing what Sony has to offer on their console it's like you can't get excited for anything else anymore.

With people who don't like paying for downloadable content, Get Over It! If I had a job and I did an amazing job I would want to get paid, so you're no different. Why do developers have to break their necks just only so you can have everything for free? A job is a job everyone has to get paid some how, and in this situation developers get paid through us; oh, no, lol.

I don't mind paying for DLC, what I do mind is paying for DLC that launches Day 1 or shortly after the game releases, because that's just proof it could easily have been on the disc and free.

cliff already said what this was going to be months ago

not long after gears 2 ships they are going to release a map pack of several of the maps from the first game reworked for gears 2

as for pricing he said they were trying to work out a sponsorship kinda thing for the first set of gears maps(raven down and old bones via discovery channel) so they would be free

14 - huh?
wtf is going on... developers are already planning on their games having DLC? Lets try focusing on delivering the best game possible on its release date first before even THINKING about DLC.

I'm a fan of DLC if it fixes key issues or brings something new to the table AFTER its release.
