Tales of Vesperia Is Xbox 360's Fastest Selling Game In Japan

Kotaku: Sure, Namco Bandai's latest Tales RPG had to settle for a fourth place finish, but it faced strong competition. Phantasy Star Portable, with its Monster Hunter Portable-like appeal, still holds down the number one spot, with the newest Fire Emblem and Rhythm Tengoku Gold placing and showing, respectively, with well over one hundred thousand units sold. Tales of Vesperia's 100K-plus debut week is certainly going to move some Xbox 360s in Japan, as gamers there were lining up en masse to secure the 360 exclusive RPG.

1 - This is
the beginning of something special. Can you imagine if they start to sell more, those global sales will be very interesting for the 360 if Japan starts to get on the bandwagon. Loved the demo...

wow so a game sells 100,000 copies big woop mgs 4 sold somewhere in the 4 million to 3.5 million copies does that mean its the beginning of the ps3 no, and like ^^^ said there aint going to be enough games to keep the 360 sales steady just sayin

1.3 - Maybe this will entice Sony to start moving the RPG gravy train along
I like the fact we get Disgaea 3 and Valkyria Chronicles exclusive this fall, but they made little impact in Japan. Maybe the 360's success will get Sony to push Level 5 and WKC quicker.

@ doshey

100k in week one can mean a million or more in a few months. But still. The more Japanese people see JRPG's are on the 360 first and most, you might see the switch in the end.

People don't want to feel left out of their favorite genre of games. The PS3 is and will be for a long time.

Lol. Why get your hopes up. As long as the PS3 is still alive the 360 has no hope in Japan. 2 yrs and only 500,000 sold??? Its an unfair situation but it is what it is. You still forget that PS3 is the only place to play FFXII in Japan and you know thats all that matters in Japan so too bad. The 360 RPG's are nice and at most it just creates dual console owners

Even shane kim has accepted that Japan is a dead end. I suggest you do to

Would've been 300k for PS3, but 100K is very impressive for 360-japan.
If Microsoft sees those numbers you can bet your ass They're going to try to make FFXIII-Japan a reality.

Of course, I don't think Square will because they Just want Finish off FFXIII for PS3 in Japan and get those sales into recoop major loses.

mgs 4 had 4 million shipped at the end of june, and what u trying to say its not near that mark of sold cuz im pretty sure a whole month later there would of been enough sales to get it into the 3.5 million range

and mart 360 selling a million systems in a month or few please two years and u guys are still under a million 1 year sony has over 1.5 million so just give up on japan already

kinggeoff, so rooting for team sports is fine but rooting for consoles is not? why kind of logic is that. who set the rules that you can only rooting for team sports and still has life. if you root for consoles, you automatically lose yours.

1.14 - Paying to ensure that a game is exclusive to the Xbox360
is something that Microsoft is known for and this is yet another one of those cases. Predictably it's moved some hardware in Japan but for Microsoft to truly win over all those tens of millions of gamers who are simply waiting for the next PS3 price drop Microsoft will have to pay for a lot more exclusives.

Sony, meanwhile, are surely in a bit of bother because unlike Microsoft they cant afford to just hand out $20M+ to every other developer out there. This is where issues of monopolistic practices rear their ugly head and little bit of free and fair competition that exists (nothings 100% free and fair anyway) starts to fall apart.

Imagine if the American car companies got together and paid Mobil and Sunoco to never put gasoline in any car that's not an American brand. They wouldn't be buying all the gasoline just paying to ensure that a large number of Gas stations do not serve owners of those other cars. All of a sudden owning a foreign brand car would become very inconvenient. This is Microsoft's strategy.

I doubt that this is enough for Japan to suddenly start buying thousands of xbox's, but credit to MS for getting on the ladder in Japan.

6 - I agree with number one.
MSFT could be starting to change the 360's perception in Japan for the good. I remember when people in the USA rejected 360(laughing about MSFT for intering the industry).

We don't know what is being talked about or shown on the ground over there, we don't know if the Japanese have *or* have not been paying attention to what has been revealed or talked about over here.

Sales in Japan were climbing just after E3 many weeks before TOV.

8.1 - True.
I don't really like RPG's, but nearly every other genre of game is on the PS3 now.
If that's what the majority are playing on consoles, it should be sorted. There's enough FPS and racing games now Sony, concentrate on the other main marketable genre...and make some damn Platformers/action adventures like the old days while you're at it, oh and a new Devil Dice/Bombastic/XI.

I'm not saying "Microsoft FTW", but they do deserve some credit for moving a game like this. But I also think they'll need more than that to gain a foothold in Japan.

Enjoy your victory in Japan while it lasts. :)

juuken, I gave you some bubbles. People are probably just use to your old comments and not being the wiser think you are just using sarcasm. Your comment was a good one as you stated facts, ps3 needs more jrpg's and not a year or two from now but now. It might take some time for people to get used to juuken 2.0. Don't worry, they will see you for who you are. Eventually you can't run from the truth.

They'll evaporate due to diffusion (Movement of substances from higher concentration to lower concentration) and vaporize due the heat of the sun.

Edit
I meant evaporate. I meant diffusion as well. It will also vaporize due the heat from the sun and osmosis does not require a living cell. It's movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane (cell membranes are semi-permeable because they have phospholipid bilayers. The heads are hydrophilic, and the tails are hydrophobic).

10 - You guys are really annoying
All of you. I mean, does it really matter what system sells what anywhere? Do you live in Japan? How does this affect any of you? People are saying stuff like, "I feel sorry for you" fanboy crap,, you guys are all in your own little worlds. Anything you type here doesn't effect anything in the real world. You can love or condemn this game and it will never change anything.

I for one could care less about a Tales type of game. I hate the action rpg genre because the Tales series gets it all wrong. Want action rpg? Play Fable 2. This game is complete garbage, but no matter how I feel about it, people are still gonna buy games like this. Thus games like this will always come out. Meanwhile, you guys are just gonna sit here , praise the game, talk crap about the 360, or the ps3,, and I wish you guys would just shut up already. You people just make me so freakin nausiated. Can you just stfu already ?,, all of you,, please shut your holes.

Not sure why anyone disagreed with Ska, but he's right and it makes more sense than my input.

I still hold that I didn't feel Lost Odyssey was particularly good or inspired to be in the first place, but it definitely sold okay, but was seen more as a JRPG for Americans in Japan.

Tales, as skadoosh mentioned, is already established in Japan.

LoD did really well for a first time rpg of it's kind. I didn't get a chance to pick it up, but I will in September. That along with Undiscovery. I'd pay attention to lifetime sales of the game, because by the time this generation is over LoD will be a classic.
