Console Gaming: From the PC Gamer Perspective
18
About a month ago, Bob ordered an Xbox 360. His reasoning for not having one has revolved around the fact that he was content with PC games. But then came the announcement that pushed him to purchase: Netflix via the Xbox 360. Now Bob offers an explanation of the advantages of console gaming, from a PC gamer perspective:

Well that is the thing about PC gaming you can tailor it to your own personal needs. If you have the money you can go out and spend a small fortune on a PC that will play everything at 2560 x 1600. If you have more modest tastes for around £500 you can build a PC that runs the game at 1680 x 1050. With a console you get 720p and that is it.
Not quite sure where the guy in the story is coming from though. Apparently he had no idea game demos existed ???? erm there have been game demo's of PC games for years. He may have been impressed with the online but I certainly wasn't. I can play TF2 for hours with no problem on the PC, with GTA 4 and the xbox 360 I would be lucky to get one game before I would see "lost connection to blah de blah"
I understand for the majority of people console gaming is enough for them, however it is a mistake to think console gaming is enough for EVERYONE. I have tried it and now my console sits being unused and I am back to gaming on my PC.

I've always wondered, is that a native resolution or just upscaled? I mean the game will only have so much native detail, and I have a hard time believing games are developed at 2560 x 1600.

Pc games have no idea on what hardware they will be required to run, so the assets for a PC games are made to suit many machine specs.
If your machine can handle it - you can natively render a game whatever top resolution your card and machine will run at a decent speed, so yes that is native resolution. Of course textures are not designed to give you a 1 to 1 pixel mapp at these sorts of resolutions, so you could argue your not getting the full bennift, but if you have a hot PC and a monitor capable of displaying such an image, you can play games at that res. Most gaming PC monitors are simply not capable of displaying an image of that size though, with 1680 x 1050 being a normal PC LCD resolution. If you spend about £300 on a 24" monitor you can get 1920x1200 res monitors - which is Full 1080P territory. Monitors that support 2560x1600 are all 30" or more and cost upwards of £1000 - only the smallest fraction of PC gamers have ever come near a display like this, so its a misnomer to quote these resolutions as only a very few PC gamers have seen that res.

Developers have gotten smart with their tech now. So even when displaying textures at a higher resolution, another small bumpy post processing texture is layered over it. Procedural texturing I think its called...

@1.2 - Yes, that is 100% native detail. No upscaling involved. That is why PC games always look so much sharper.
And I have a hard time believing that a real PC gamer would give a rats ass if the 360 allows for netflix. Why? Because he would already have his PC connected to his HDTV like the rest of PC gamers.
For me, I will always be a PC gamer first and foremost. But I own a Wii, 360, and a PS3. Why? Because I like some of the exclusive titles on the consoles.
But I would smash and burn every console I have ever owned if it meant I could keep my PC.

2 - I'm also a recent convert, but...
...he makes 2 points of dubious validity in my eyes.
I recently bought a PC after a lifetime of being a staunch PC elitist (what can I say, I didn't want to wait another 6 months for GTA, AGAIN), so I agree with him for the most part.
But the fact that you generally have your PC sitting on a desk instead of under (or near) a large television, controlled from an office chair as opposed to a large comfy couch, is not the fault of the machine.
I have my 360 next to my PC plugged into the same monitor it uses, and I know a few people that do, so the benefits of "couch gaming" are hardly universal. I could stick my PC under my TV or install a couch in my study.

I hear you dude and you do have a point, But the vast majority of people who are not living in their bedrooms, have a Desktop PC no where near their TV, and their consoles set up in the main lounge, so for most peopel it IS a tangable bennifit.
My own house has an office room with three networked 'workstation class' PC's and large high res monitors, but I must admit, I hardly ever bother gaming on them. I much prefer to sit in my front room on a 1080P lcd and play 360 and Ps3 titles, but thats just me! :)

4 - huh?
it's obvious some people still have a desktop PC and a separate entertainment center, but what about those of us who've combined the two? When combined, most of his points fall apart.
In the end, it all boils down to an individual's electronic intelligence and the effort they put forward to a better gaming experience.

4.1 - Did we read the same article?
His whole point is how effortless and cohesive 360 and LIVE are compared to the pain in the ass that is PC gaming. Can you even get a 42" monitor? How much does one cost? Can you lay down and play with keys and mouse? Can you hit one button to download and play demos?

So yes, he JUST figured this out. Reading about things on the internet is different than experiencing them first hand.

Articles like this shouldn't be on N4G. Its a thinly veiled advert by a Microsoft employee, if they want it posted then pay N4G for the advertising space like anyone else.
