Now that we have THREE major consoles out at one time we seem to have a battle royale for who gets the most sales and can call themselves the winner of this epic battle. Well let me tell you, as someone who owns all three (Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii) I have to say that I think no one is winning this battle yet and I will tell you why.

Nintendo is selling and producing 2.4 million Wii's a month. The US install base of PS3 is only 5 million. In two months they will sale enough Wii's to counter Sony's entire US install base.. In order for the PS3 to even catch up the Wii would have to completely stop selling for 2 years. It might not be set in stone just yet but it will take a serious miracle for either the 360 or the PS3 to take on the Wii's numbers.

There's a split between hardcore gamers and casual gamers. 15 million PS3s and 20 million 360's vs 30 million Wii's.

35 million gamers worldwide still want Gears of Wars, Resistances, God of Wars, Fables, Alan Wakes, Heavy Rains, etc. etc. etc.

Nintendo is just really luck this generation making a game cube with motion controls.

If you think the "hardcore" companies like Microsoft and Sony aren't paying very, very close attention to the Wii's success just because it's "for casuals", then you're incredibly mistaken.

People can close their eyes and kick and scream all they want about how the Wii isn't a "real gamer's" console, but it doesn't change the fact that it will quite likely have the greatest impact on the future of gaming than any of the 3 consoles of this generation.

There's pure console numbers sold, software sold, market share, and pure profit to look at.

That's an incredibly subjective thing, then. Someone could argue they prefer more of the XBox exclusives (as few as there were) last generation to the PS2 exclusives and thus the XBox "won" last generation, but no one says that. Everyone says the PS2 "won" - and it did.

Why?

Sales. Because sales are the only things that aren't subjective. You can pretend that the system with the "most quality" games wins the console war, if you want. But I guarantee you the companies who MAKE those systems are going to be paying far, far more attention to units sold.

In the end, this is a business, so it all comes down to the bottom line - money.

Well Tuttle I have to disagree. The Wii has won in sales. And it will eventually plateau. It may even plateau soon enough that the PS3 could come close if this gen lasts 5 years. I don't believe it will though the PS3 will certainly be supported that long. And I pick the PS3 as the only console with a ghost of a chance because evolution, Bluray adoption, sales trends, and every analyst predicts it will overtake the 360.

Now why do I disagree the Wii has won? Because the Wii won in sales and among families and grannies but depending on your definition of what it means to be a gamer then in that case the Wii is barely on the board. If you want to talk genre bending, boundary pushing gaming then the Wii has barely shown up to the party.

If your game sucks and the only thing that saves it is the control mechanism, then your game sucks. No one is going to look back in 10 years and say, "Wow, Wii game such and such really broke new ground" But people will look back and say MGS4 is a game that will always be considered a remarkable achievement. Or the HALO series defined how to do a trilogy in gaming. The fact that I had to say 'Wii game such and such' rather than note a specific title is already an indication and actually quite sad that they could lead without really achieving anything of note.

No one will outright "win" or "lose" this generation, I don't think. All of the big three will certainly release consoles for the next generation, hopefully all of them learning from the mistakes of this generation:

1. From Microsoft: Don't rush a poorly tested console to the market. Include a hard drive on ALL VERSIONS of your console.

2. From Sony: Console price points $500 and above are bad.

3. From Nintendo: Appeal to casuals if you want, but don't ignore the hardcore. Stop milking the same old francises and try to be a BIT more creative.

If ALL of the companies learned ALL of these lessons, the next generation would be AMAZING. However, sadly, I wouldn't count on it.

I own all 3 and though the wii is winning atm. I can tell you I seriously don't have much expectations for the wii beyond 09.

PS3 is going to bring me most of what im looking for in the next 5+ years and I expect 360 will bring some goods for a couple more years too. PS4, Wii 2 and Xbox 720 are going to come out in a time when PS3 is at #1 in sales of this current generation I do believe. It will approach or surpass PS2's record before all said and done.

Im not opposed to buying a $500 Next-Gen console if its specs are worthy , $700 is my limit. Not counting bundle prices. If there was a sweet bundle I would go to $800 max. I admit this is not the target price for a console to hit mainstream. Theres always price cuts though. I want a powerfull console with a long life cycle.

The wii really never evolved to the next gen. It still relies on kiddy games with lackluster graphics. It really won't make it another 3 years. Who will buy it for its bad graphics, sorry list of gamea and terrible online in 3 years when the other two consoles have so much more to offer at a lower price by then. The ps3 and 360 are the only true hd consoles this generation. The wi is a toy that can't compete with the hardcore crowd. Casual gamers enjoy your toy, while you can. As the ps3 and 360 will only get better visually, the wi will never have the power to evolve to hd!!!!

If winning means the company with the most money in the end, then the Wii has already won. It's the only console that makes money on each piece of hardware sold, so Nintendo can basically do laps in a 50 mile wide pool of liquid hot gold with all the money they've made.

I honestly don't care if the Wii "won" though. I'm enjoying the hell out of my PS3.

And I'm getting tired of the comment that the "PS3 is a glorified/updated PS2." WTF is that even supposed to mean? Isn't the 360 an updated xbox? What a stupid thing to say. Sony has evolved quite a bit, even when just looking at the online component.

Microsoft is seeing huge profits on the gaming division and is easily going to surpass the total amount of original xboxes. Probably see double the amount. That equals winning!

Sony's ps3 is also selling well and its main gun, the bluray player, is becoming more mainstream. With bluray movies becoming cheaper, the ps3 is just going to gain more interest. That equals a win.

And the Wii to me is crap but it's makes a profit with every console sold. A huge sales improvement over the weak gamecube. That is a win!

No one is winning the Next Gen console "war"

Wii is not next gen IMO (look at it's games)
it is outpacing the PS2 (but it wont last, already workin on Wii2)
360 has 6 million on the PS3(minus 17% and 5 year lifecycle)
(workin on 720/phoenix)
PS3 has sold more consoles than the 360 has
(in the same amount of time)
and is on pace with the PS2 (add a ten year lifecycle and the best 1st party titles in the business and you get PS3 Next Gen FTW!)

I consider the console war to be between the 360 and PS3. Sure the Wii may be destroying both of them in terms of sales, but the Wii caters to a different demographoc. Also, if the Wii sells well (well, it already has) it doesn't affect the games coming to the PS3 and 360. However, if the 360 or PS3 sells well and the other doesn't, that will affect the amount and quality of games coming to each system.

So, the battle is between the 360 and PS3 and they are pretty much neck and neck. There will be no winner this year in terms of sales or games. Both systems are selling extremely well and have many AAA games.

Hell even Atari is trying to make Alone in the Dark better for the ps3, since it sucked so bad for the 360. Whatever douchbag, sony fans will ever believe your antips3 propaganda!!!!!!!! I have both consoles, and in the beginning the 360, had a edge, but right now the ps3 is taking over because of their 1st party exclusives on the horizon. This is a area where the 360 needs help. Ps3 owners can now play mulitiplatform games that equal or surpass the 360's thesedays. Every ps3 sold these days guarantees that the ps3 will get any game that the 360 does. For every lackluster 360 exclusive that comes out, the ps3 has a 1st party game to shine over it........

PS3 is in it for the long run and they are already catching up to the PS3 and by later this year they will outsell the 360 in worldwide sells and by 2009 and on it's gonna be all PS3.
The games, rising technology w/ accessories, programs, trophies, free online, etc. just make the PS3 the best console of choice.

And don t give that 10 year marathon thing. In 10 years the ps3 graphics will look like the ps2 do today. And i think that the only reason the ps3 isn t doing so good is: now it has competition from microsoft and nintendo. when the ps2 launched (nov. 2000) it had 1 1/2 head start over Gamecube (may 2002) and xbox (march 2002). If that s not a lot of time to get an installed fanbase i don t know what is, and games where coming by the dozen (i don t recall anyone stating that they prefered quality over quantity back then). And now with the xbox 360 releasing before the ps3 they re having a hard time catching up. But i agree it s not a sprint, but think 5-6-7- years down the line will you stiil want to play games on a console that has an 8 year old technology (you keep saying that the xbox 360 is old technology and its only 2 1/2 years old) or will you prefer the new thing that just came out.

What are you talking about?
PS2 has plenty of competition.
What made the PS2 sell was it's great games, backwards compatibility w/ the PS1, DVD Player, and it's massive growing library of games.
Just like w/ PS3 and the Blu-ray player people didn't think DVD's were going to be the future of games and now look at it.
Same thing was said about the PS1 when they came out w/ CDs for games instead of game cartridges.
Games continued to grow on the PS1 and PS2 and that's what made them the most selling consoles of their generation.
The reason why Sony wins every generation from the PS1 to the future is because they always think outside the box.
Sony always tries to find new ways to make better games whether that means better formatting, bigger processing power, better online, better services, etc.
People never said Blu-ray would become a main format for movies or games and now it's the best and only HD Format that you can get for movies and pretty soon games.
Like now you guys doubt what Sony is doing just like every other generation people think Sony are crazy for trying new things but in the end new technology in games, services, online, trophies, a growing library of games, and variety is what sells a console.
Since Sony are the only ones ready to take risks every generation whether in video games, electronics, cameras, TVs, etc. they are always the ones that are going to win.
Aren't these facts starting to become true now and aren't these facts also true in the past w/ other consoles made by Sony as well?
Exactly I rest my case.
