Japan lines up for Xbox 360 game: Madness prevails

Destructoid writes:

"Take a good, long, lasting look at the above image folks, because it's not something you see every day, and it could be something you'll never see again. That is a bunch of Japanese people lining up for an Xbox 360 game -- just when you think you'd witnessed it all.

This is of course for Tales of Vesperia, with customers patiently waiting at the Akihabara Yodobashi Camera to get their hands on this exclusive new JRPG. Certainly not the biggest launch in the world, but for a 360 game, it's is as stellar as anybody could imagine.

This morning's launch was accompanied by on-stage antics that included producers Yoshito Higuchi and Tsutomu Gouda, the latter of which quipped: "Even though the Olympics are starting, everyone please enjoy playing Tales of Versperia." Pro wrestler Wataru Sakora was also present for the event.

Although hype for Vesperia isn't as mad as it would be had the game come out for the PS3 or Wii, a "steady stream" of 360 consoles are reportedly being sold. And all it took was a Japanese game in a Japanese genre made by Japanese people to do it..."

if it were a wii version, or even a ps3 version I bet the line would be longer though.

LOL I was just going to copy and paste that before I read your post.
Maybe if Toshiba produces the 360 as an 3rd manufacturer games like TOV and SO4 will *HELP* push 360's in Japan :)

I hope the 360 becomes successful in Japan. It would push Sony to do better on their system and make the market there better overall. Instead of making shovelware for the Wii more and more Japanese developers will look towards the PS3/360 combo to develop on. And this generation of gaming is severly lacking the quality Japanese developed games we're used to from previous generations.

And it took the 360 like 5 rpgs that were either exclusive or timed exclusive just to have a descent line. The 360 is a lost cause in Japan and Microsoft is just preparing the market for next generation because there's nothing they can do to make it better this generation. We will see Japan sales this week it will probably tie the PS3 in sales this week.

This isn't a big deal. The waits were longer for Blue Dragon. And the lineups were about the same between Vesperia and Eternal Sonata. Look at what happened to those two games after their first week. I'm ALMOST certain the same fate will befall Tales of Vesperia (remember I said almost, not certainly)

Temporary boost. Just like Blue Dragon, Eternal Sonata, and Ace Combat 6

Lines of about 200 for a Jrpg in Japan are nothing. That is a TINY number for a line wanting Jrpg in Japan

3.5 - Yeah, actually
Blue Dragon had long lines. It sold 300,000 I think (total) in Japan alone, with less than 500,000 japan 360 userbase at the time. Still very good though. Sold better in JPN than US though.

@lodossrage- How long have you lived in Japan? I think the article covered the point that it was not the biggest launch ever, but this is not a common site for a 360 game. If they continue to release JRPG's one after the other the Japanese will slowly warm up to the 360 for JRP's and we know that the 360 has been doing a good job at keeping RPG's in general coming to the 360.

3.7 - Sounds like damage control to me...
But what if alot of other stores were having the same kind of lines? Don't worry, it's ok if the 360 has a little success in japan... because if it does, it will let Sony and Nintendo have to keep putting in high effort, for fear that the 360 might take their fanbase! It is highly unlikely that something like that would happen, but if sony and nintendo think it could... then it is we the gamers who win!

As I predicted earlier when everyone said I was stupid and didn't know whaT I was talking about.

Xbox 360 > Ps3 for total overall sales coming up next week. Wait and see. The trend wll continue 2 weeks past that too. Sony has nothing that caters to the japanese market. That is why their console sales are so low.

Japanese don't care about FPS and Action games. They like slower more thought provoking games. Games that take time and stat tracking to complete.

Sony has alienated their market and they did it on their own and to themselves. Xbox 360, at the price it is in Japan, might just take off like the psp did after it's 3 years on the marketof mediocre showings.

Sony messed up.

Anyway... this doesn't say anything seeing as how there isn't that many 360's in Japan. I have been to Yodobashi, Akihabara, all over. I have probably been to about 85% of the tech shops in there (Akihabara). Demand for Xbox isn't that big. I will admit that Microsoft is a presence in the country, though. They are just not a very big presence at all.

Personally, I believe the rpgs will help 360 in Japan to some extent, be it long term or short.
But they need stuff MORE Japanese stuff on their box to compete with Juggernauts Wii and PS3 keeping the golden grip on the land of the rising sun.

Well first off the ps3 doesnt have anykind of foothold over there. It is all about the wii and ds. The ps3 and 360 are getting trampled by the wii over there. But it is nice that they are getting hyped for some games on either console.

you do realize that less than 3 years from now FFXIII will be out EXCLUSIVELY on PS3 in Japan. 360 is going to overtake that?

Clearly, this the only spot in his post where PSP and 3 years appear in the same sentence.

And then they handed out 10/10 scores to it just to write criticising articles about it a month later, and bring up everything negative that they were too afraid to mention in their reviews. Just like with GTA IV.

I'm not saying the games are bad in any way, just that journalists are cowards and hypocrites.

This is why reviews don't matter. Big games cant score low and review scores seem to have more to do with generating website hits than actual quality. Just pay attention to the game, if it looks fun try it and if you like it buy it.

You get that feeling because you are paranoid and delusional.

The fact is that sales for PS3 are abysmal. The games are worse.

You are experiencing what is called "cognative dissonance"; this is the discomfort you feel when reality doesnt match your well-held and dear (but fictional) vision of the reality.

It's ok. You can seek professional help.

LOL @ the disagrees of 360 Man's comment.

"360 is truly the home for RPGs eastern and western

by september we would have too human and infinte undiscovery
just two more to add to the already long list"

Is 100%, without a doubt, true. No doubt about it.

If you want to play a well-rounded catalogue of games; get an Xbox 360.

Something for everyone. With the New Xbox Experience (NXE) due in the Fall, Xbox 360 will even start to fight back against the Wii. The PS3 has already been totally marganilized, now its the Wii's turn via the PrimeTime and Avatar updates..

Oh, and did I mention Netflix watch now?

I'm glad my decision to purchase an Xbox 360 (as opposed to a Sony playstation (I have three failed PS2s, i swore to never buy a Sony product after the sales rep. refused to return my calls after my 2nd machine died and i couldnt get warranty fix -- i was just SOL according to the store/sony)).

The Xbox 360 *is* the home of RPG games -- without any shadow of a doubt, and it is just too funny to see the disagrees.

I'll leave the game-list comparisons up to whoever posted the 'disagrees' on 360 Man's 100% accurate comment.

With all do respect, I think it should be stated that the Xbox 360 is currently the home of RPG's for THIS GENERATION. I'd agree with that statement as of this moment... though I think both the PS3 and 360 are still lacking in great J-RPG's. But I believe it will be a long time before the PS2's library of quality RPG's is passed (if it ever happens). I'm not saying the 360 isn't doing well in that department. It's getting there and Microsoft's done a pretty good job at securing those titles. All I'm saying is that I think it's a little too early to be calling it the "home of RPG's". If you're talking strictly about this generation and at this very moment then I'd agree. But anything more than that is, I think, getting a bit ahead of itself.
