EDIT: I did research a bit but all I could find were US sales and UK sales in 2007 and the 360 outsold the PS3 in those.

PS3 had a slow start, so at that time yes 360 did out sell the PS3.
But if you look at the world wide sales now, PS3s are selling at a higher rate than 360 at this time, even with a little slump at the moment.
Give it a year or so and I'm sure the PS3 will catch up....provided the credit crunch doesn't turn people off buying consoles.

@1.2: Thanks to Japan the PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide. Japan/Europe seem to be mainstays with the PS3 the UK and more so in the USA is Xbox > PS3.

Anyway, Activision also said the Wii was a passing fad so I will leave this guesswork to the fortune teller's. Sounds like a site needs some hit's.

I think PS3 will sell 9 million this year and 360 6 million. Gears 2 won't sell as many systems that you would think. Little Big Planet will be a system seller. Last year the PS3 was able to sell 9 million when it was mostly $100 more expensive, not many games, and blu-ray did not win yet. I think this year 9 million would be realistic goal or even 10 million.

This year the PS3 pulled ahead:

PS3: 5.6M

360: 4.2M

PS3 has sold 35% more than 360 this year (1.4M gap). If you extend that out to the rest of the year and adjust for holiday sales boost you're looking of a gap of 2.5-3.5M in favor of the PS3.

So, yeah, Activision is right, the PS3 will outsell the 360 this year by a significant margin.

The 360 only outsold PS3 in 2006, but the PS3 launched in November of that year, so that obviously doesn't count. And PS3 outsold Xbox 360 for the calendar year of 2007.

2008 doesn't look any different.

If that's true PS3 only needs to sell 600,000 more units than the 360 for rest of the year. And fall is the biggest selling season. With more exclusive, diverse, and quality games coming out for PS3 the gap could be 3 million by the end of this year. Activision is being to conservative with the PS3 numbers. With their logic the PS3 would only need to sell 600,000 more units more until 2009 because the fiscal year doesn't end until March i think. They are undercutting the PS3 sales for sure.

You should care, because whats the fun in playing online if no one else owns your console? The fun in multiplayer is that there actually are multiple players around the globe with the same game and console to compete with.

I care because I'm interested in the business aspect of gaming. You obviously aren't, but A LOT of people are. It's interesting to see how these companies' decisions affect their place in the "console war." I always watch how games affect sales, and I like to see how consumers are responding to certain announcements.

Nobody says you SHOULD care. Many people just tend to be interested, although some people use these numbers for the wrong reason (justification of their purchase to make them look better -- fanboys).

Yes, the software for the Xbox 360 is selling more than the PS3, but one has to remember the difference in the number of consoles within regions.

The USA is a hub of spending and as long as the Xbox 360 install base is greater than the PS3 in that region you will see the 360 selling more.

However, Sony does have many internal studio's. All these games will be exclusive to Sony's platform. With games that are continually multiplatform coupled with Sony's internal studios we could see the amount of software for the PS3 overtake the Xbox 360's dispite the 360's year headstart. The more software on the market, the more that is sold, so by the end of this generation we could see the software sales of the PS3 pass those of the Xbox 360.

Oh, and it's ok that you don't like the mentioned games. That is why there is more than one console on the market. To give consumers choice. You play the console that has the games that you want, that's what gaming is all about, the ability to play what you want to play.

Lets say that the difference in units is similar to the ps2 vs xbox. A lower attachment rate on the ps2 still yields more games sold than the xbox's. Think ahead, think bigger
