No Portal on PSN says Valve

CVG:

Valve has dismissed rumours that its upcoming Xbox Live Arcade title Portal: Still Alive will come to PS3's PlayStation Network eventually. "You're smart to ask. But no," Valve told us.

1.1 - I mean seriously, Do they even own a ps3???? I start to wonder. It's not that big of a game to make and it can sell quite well.
Just say why they don't want to develop the game??
-money?
-Lack of skills?

Atleast talk to sony, but those arrogant son of **** won't even do that.

By next year, they would see profits on ps3 and they would be running to sony, to publish their game.

The thing that I find really annoying is that Valve blames the PS3 and not their lack of resources as why they don't develop for it. If you don't think it's good business to develop for a platform that's fine, but don't tell us it's because the platform is no good when that is obviously not the case.

Valve is a old school dev. If they don't like something they don't like it, plain and simple just deal with it. Valve doesn't need a console anywho, 360, ps3 or wii.

3.2 - no kojima production titles on xbox
Because Kojima is a sucky 360 dev led by a lazy four-eyes?

If valve was making ps3 games instead we'd be hearing a very different tune. He's not a "lazy" developer, he just doesn't see the payoff.

Honestly, go back to whatever hole it was you crawled out of.

I agreed too.

And Xi, MGS4 could have been done on the 360 if there weren't certain limitations for it. Kojima prefers high quality games and that's why he didn't make this game for both systems.

That has nothing to do with the article.

"doesn't see the payoff," Xi? how about losing potential sales to 14.4 million consoles owners? and with sales numbers of MGS4 and GTA4, it's proven that you can sell games on the PS3. Laziness fits Valve pretty nicely when it comes to PS3 development. That and/or ignorance.

mind providing some proof that mgs4 would be "limited" by the 360.

And calling valve a lazy dev because they arn't making ps3 ports has nothing to do or add the article either, so what's your point?

"mind providing some proof that mgs4 would be "limited" by the 360."

What proof do you require? Kojima is known to be a perfectionist. Even 50gb wasn't enough for MGS4 so he had to eliminate a few things. The size of the 360 is very limited. A couple of developers have complained about that.

"And calling valve a lazy dev because they arn't making ps3 ports has nothing to do or add the article either, so what's your point?"

They are lazy. Why is there always some kind of an excuse when working on PS3 games? If they're developers, they wouldn't always try to find the easiest way out of things.

That's a personal opinion and it does contribute to the article.

EDIT: Valve are perfectionists? You're kidding me, right? How will they be limited by the PS3? Explain that one to me please.

And now we're moving to online? Sweet Lord in heaven, you hate the PS3 with a passion don't you? The reason why there's problems with MGO is because Konami refused to use PSN servers. MGO and MGS4 are two different things. If Konami would have used PSN servers, MGO would be much better.

Straying from the article I see.

Kojima doesnt go off ranting about how much everything sucks. All Gabe does is complain all day. He is one of those know it all nerds that have to chime in in every conversation and give his opinion. Like we give a damn.

Kojima never complained about the 360, he just praised the PS3. Gabe did quite the opposite.

valve has already stated how they dont want to learn the new Cell architecture because its too complicated. They even went as far as saying it was a waste of time. So there not focusing on the PS3 becasue its too hard to develop for. Doesnt that sound lazy.

And theres no need to prove why MGS4 wont come to 360, as a simple fact that its impossible.

Seriously, the 5million difference between 15m and 20m is enough to make Valve say "I don't see how we could possibly make money if we developed for the Ps3"? Even if the developer only grabs $15 per $60 game sold, that would be ignoring a potential $225million market. What could R&D to translate an already functional and powerful game engine to a different memory and processing architecture possibly cost? $25million( an EXTREMELY liberal estimate seeing as how the engine is already refinedto the point of perfection)? To recoup that one time expense to optimize your engine you would have to sell 1.5million copies of a game(a little steep considering Valves sales). But then you would not only have a strong existing foundation for the next game you make, but you would garner respect and trust from your consumer by putting out a quality product. All that aside you have to admit to make a decision to ignore a $225million and growing market like that is a ridiculous mistake, and points towards Valve pushing some personal agendas, or extreme laziness.

Valve just don't want to develop a new engine. Source has been good enough until the PS3 turned up and did things slightly differently so instead of putting a bit of time in to make a modern engine that runs on current platforms they say the PS3 is just a waste of time and no good can come from developing for it.

Funny, EA are probably thinking something a little different around now:

http://kotaku.com/5030788/p...

Face it, if Valve wanted to, they could overcome the hurdles, a developer of their calibre should have no problem, but they won't. As more and more devs begin to sing the praises of the PS3, you can't help but wonder what is behind their reluctance.

Personally, I really like MGO. I think it's a really good online game. You may disagree, if you've even tried it, but that doesn't mean its horrible. If you're talking about the server problems, then I don't think that has anything to do with Kojima. I'm fairly certain that's a Konami issue.

In reality Valve has no reason to not develop well on the PS3 (unless Microsoft pays them to be exclusive). They are treating PS3 owners like garbage. People are justified in being upset with their product. The Orange Box was sub par on the PS3, and they don't support it at all. They refuse to do any patches or updates, and I have no idea why. They could have gotten help, but chose not too. They are playing favorites, and it makes no sense when sales are involved. They could make a lot more money if they put a little effort into making multi-platform titles.

I am basing my comment on the same thing mainly PS3 fans are with Gabe. The fact that he is not giving the PS3 support and not developing games for it = lazy. I am even being nicer than PS3 fans and not calling him names like "fat slob", etc like they are doing for Gabe. These are just angry fans because this developer chooses to make games on other platforms. Nobody knows the reasons they aren't supporting the PS3 platform as much but they assume lazy.

Xi owned the commenters because while they are busy bashing Gabe for his lack of support they perfectly accept it when someone like Kojima only develops for their console of choice. Some will say because the 360 can't run it, even when Kojima himself said he could.

All of the same arguments against Valve can be used with Kojima. The 360 is a viable platform, the owners buy games, developers are singing it's praises yet he still won't develop on the 360. You can't help but wonder was is behind his reluctance.

I think the point is is that the 360 has over 5X less storage capacity on disk than the PS3 and there is no ability to cache data. These are the limitations that Kojima is facing.

The thing with Valve is that there really doesn't seem to be any good reason for the lack of support. There have been many games released for the PS3 that exceed the complexity of, say, Half Life 2 and have run as smoothly as lubricated butter yet for some reason Valve seem to struggle getting a 4 year old game to run as well as these other titles. Also, there are plenty of robust online games on the PS3 but somehow Team Fortress still provides a glitchy, sub-par experience. It definitely seems that instead of attempting to bring their engine in line with the modern standards, Valve are just blaming Sony for their problems and giving PS3 owners the finger.

I can fully understand how you can see this as fanboyism and double standards but the thing is, PS3 games are running better and better these days. Too the point that the PS3 version of a multi-plat game being the stronger version comes as no surprise. Yet Valve are still adamant that developing for the PS3 is an almost insurmountable task. Kojima Productions on the other hand have no benchmark to work to. MGS4 is a one of a kind game that has been geared so heavily towards the PS3 to a degree that I think is, so far, unheard of this gen. When we see other games like MGS4 appear on the 360 (as in ones that utilise the full 50GB BD and use the Cache option heavily) then we can start to wonder why Kojima isn't doing a port.

As it stands, though, Valve just come across as lazy and reluctant to keep up with the changing environments they are being posed with. At the end of the day though, they're the experts and all of this is just speculation.

"PS3 games are running better and better these days. Too the point that the PS3 version of a multi-plat game being the stronger version comes as no surprise." And the same goes for 360 games running better and better so whats your point?

Don't think I was taking a stab at the 360. I'm completely willing to admit that there are plenty of great games on that system. My point was that Valve are saying that the PS3 is really hard to develop for and are making out like getting a good quality game to run on the system is a completely worthless effort due to the major difficulties that are apparently inherent with PS3 development. Maybe you could believe that a year ago (there were some shocking ports coming out for the system about this time last year) but everyone has persevered, overcome the obstacles and are now making games that run brilliantly on both platforms. Except for Valve who stubbornly stick to their guns that the PS3 is extremely awkward to develop for.

I haven't seen any multi platform for PS3 that looks noticeably different then 360 anyway.

You have to understand that I'm not being a fanboy here. The 360 is a great console and I'm not trying to slag it off.

Honestly for all we know Valve may see PS3 as a console which limits there visions.

Which is why I said that this is all speculation at the end of my last post. We don't know the true reasons for them not supporting the PS3. All I'm saying is that I can't think of any other feasible reason beyond laziness (and I'm struggling to believe that).

MGS4 was purposely made big on bluray for marketing purposes anyway if you just look through all the smoke.

Now I'm going to disagree with you here. Having played every game in the MGS series to completion I can tell you that every aspect of MGS4 was how it should have been. The graphics were amazing, there were plenty of cutscenes, huge attention to detail etc. You cannot tell me that Kojima only put these MGS series hallmarks in purely for marketing purposes!

I think you're being a bit too cynical here. Yes, Sony are making a big deal over the fact that MGS4 is only possible on the PS3 but that's what anyone would do. They're just selling their hardware. Kojima will have wanted to push the system as far as he could, not as a publicity stunt, but because he wanted to get the game as close to his vision as he could. The man's a perfectionist.

Well when this comes out there won't be much left of 2008, now will there! 2009 might hold a different story. A year certainly made a difference for Bioshock's exclusivity, but this will be weeks/months not a year.

Gabe Newell is a genius. The gravity gun in Half-Life 2 was groundbreaking when the game came out. One of the best, if not the best fps games ever made. Portal proved they haven't lost their touch.

Can't wait to try out Portal: Still Alive.

while I agree that half-life 2 was one of the greatest games, because of the physics based puzzle and gameplay...I dislike how valve is milking the shat out of Source...the episodic approach to HL2's story over the course of 4 years isn't exactly awe-inspiring either...

personally, I didn't care for the way HL2 handled with controllers either...it is clearly paced for a mouse and keyboard...and the console ports only added assist in terms of where the gun pointed (ala Goldeneye) instead of the now standard perspective lock...it just didn't feel the same...

I am not some bleeding fanboy that thinks Valve sucks just because they don't like the PS3...I just don't like Valves approach to development in terms of only introducing something groundbreaking every 10 years...portal was great...but it was a short tacked on puzzle game for the most part...TF2 was also great...but it just felt like a cell-shaded Return to Castle Wolfenstien MP imo...

Left 4 Dead is apperantly set to rearrange how we think of co-op gameplay...and I know graphics are not everything...so I am interested to see how it turns out...but it is still Source...it looks like a game from 2004...Valve is making a killing by repackaging old tech and selling it every year or so...its annoying...they come in 1998 and set a standard for FPS gameplay...they come in in 2004 (albeit because of some major delays) and set a standard for how physics can be used in a video game...4 years later...nothing new...nothing but a puzzle spin-off, an overrated MP game, and some episodes to further the already ridiculous story of HL2...

I agree Gabe Steak is talented...I just wish he would use his talent more...great avatar by the way...

I disagree with HL2 being one of the best FPS's ever made. In my own opinion it's a mediocre FPS that got alot of hype back in the day but it's actual gameplay and non-existent story. But that's just my opinion when comparing it to what i think is the best fps ever (Dues Ex) and one of the best all time in my opinion. Outside of that i'll agree that Portal was extremely good but i wish Chell had a voice actress. I just wish they conveyed her emotions will going through the tests a little more. TF2 is the best online game i played as well to date. Valve is a good group of developers it's just disheartening to see them not even taking a small attempt at making/porting a game to Ps3 themselves.

One of my greatest gaming experiences but if Valve really insist on giving the PS3 fanbase their butts to kiss then there's no way I'd support ANYTHING they do in future.

When HL ep3 and HL3 come on the PS3, I will not be buying them brand new. I supported HL2 despite Valve's crap and it's shoody end product cause I absolutlly love the franchise but I'm not going to be taking crap from developers that think I should give them money for work they didn't care to make quality.

portal is a short puzzle game with some majorly cool new ideas though...it has a decent amount of Valve humor thrown in to...its very disorienting at first, but is a lot of fun after you get the hang of what exactly the gun does...

I am as much a PS3 loyalist as anyone but making fun of Gabe's weight is really unnecessary. It has nothing to do with his business decisions and it is just immature.
