Gears of War 2 to made an appearance at the Comic-Con today and some interesting news was dropped, announcing that Gears 2 would get "linked achievements". What exactly is a "linked achievement"

Yeah. If I didn't have most of the achievements already i'd go back and get them.

I do hope there are other ways of getting those characters though as I like the way achievements are an extra to the game that you can go for or not.
I don't want them to become integral to the standard game.

And didn't burnout do something like this as well.

If you had a madden save you got a madden van.
A burnout 3 save you got a burnout 3 car.

It's all been done before.

It doesn't really matter who did it first. I hope trophies/achievements that give unlockables in the game will become mainstream. This will give the reward system whether it is trophies or achievements, alot more value.

Mario Kart Wii has it. If you have a Mario Galaxy Save... you can unlock a character.

This is nothing new, but it is neat.

Kinda like Legends of Zelda: Season and Ages game for gameboy. If you beat one before the other, you start off with a special item that will change gameplay in the next game. It added good replay value as you had to beat both games twice to really beat it.

AS many has mentioned, many games already allowed you to transfer progress from previous games, MArio Kart, Ratchet & Clank, some RPGs, ProEvolution Soccer allowed you to transfer your team...

We also have the XBLA games that will give you gold to be used in Fable 2 and the PSN/XBLA Rearmed Commando that will unlock some stuff for the retail game...

So while this is nice is NOT a Revolution...we haven't seen this much in this generation because we have had so few sequels

This is just a way to make people getting a X360 for Gears 2 to buy Gears 1 as otherwise there's no really a reason to do so...there's no really a story to catch up with

WHO would like to buy a game that is smaller, NOT BETTER than GoW2 and 5 TIMES less Bad ass?

I think ratchet had it.

If you played and beat the first game, you would get special weapons in the second one.

Beat the second one, special unlocks in third.

But sounds pretty cool i Suppose.

While this is quite clever, it is something that was done last generation. You could transfer your weapons from older Rachet and Clank games, to newer ones, and if you had made it to a certain point in the first Rachet and Clank, you got an employee discount on weapons in the third one. Still it is a great way to get people to play earlier games in a series, and I hope more games start to incorporate it.

Its good to see someone trying to use a reward system (trophies/achievements) for something in the game. I always liked the idea expecially in Ratchet and Clank Future where it was skillpoints.It would be great if this type of reward system was being implemented in many games so trophies/achievements would gain alot more value.

Eh, I hope they don't go TOO far with this. I'm obsessive enough as it is; I don't want them to make me have to get 10,000 kills in the original Gears in order to unlock something in Gears2.

This is true. The linked achievements should add to the story or gameplay, if they take it too far then it could become a second job to unlock everything.

5.2 - I would like it if
since I didn't get the "Serious" achievement that it carries over the kills so once I get a combined 10,000 kills between the two Gears, 1 and 2, that I finally get that achievement.

Totally agree. I mean it would be cool if they did special mission with different characters, similar to how Resident Evil did with Husk and the Mercenaries after you completed the game. Heck, it would cool to have an mission mode unlocked were you play as one of the Carmine Cogs for collecting certain amount Cog tags. This will tell the story of how the tags became lost in the first place.

You hear the bullet hit his head but you never see his head explode like most headshots. He will say his helmet saved him but in the sequel, he might get his head really blown off.

So far this seems like a really cool idea. Some of the more intense multiplayer achievements shouldn't unlock anything substantial, but it's a good way to recognize people who played Gears 1.

Urgh as much as I love Gears I can't be arsed to play it again but on the hardest setting to unlock stuff I should have in Gears 2. I hope the 'Kill RAAM' one, for example, is across all difficulties.. then i'll be sorted.

thoes gys at ms is thinking fast this is a good idea......if sony does linked trophyes it will be so bait that i dont think they will do it as well,but i like idea...man i dont know how im going to collect R2 TROPHYES/GEARS2 ACHIVMENTS im bying my 360 when gears 2 comes out.It will be hard mixing R2/GEARS2 in the same month!!

16 - Stupid Idea.
This is a stupid idea. I think all xbox 360 gamers played the first one quite a lot the first time round. So to have a system like this will only annoy the gamers even more. The fact they have to play through it again to get them dam cog tags just so they can unlock something stupid in the second one. Just stupid! Not only does it cause problems online with idiots saying, i am better then you because i did this and that. But your basically saying to those who did not buy gears one, to go buy it. Just so they can unlock something that should have been open in the first place. Bad idea, really is. I never liked achievements anyway due to their ungaming like tilt to the gaming world. Gaming is not a competition. Its for fun! Why you think the Wii did so great from their sales. Also stands the same for the PS3 as its always feels fun to do. But then even they go and throw trophies into the mix. They should have stayed away.
