Microsoft Hints at 'HaloCon' Event

Microsoft's very own Mr Halo has told Eurogamer that Bungie's series could soon be getting its own dedicated event to rival the likes of BlizzCon and QuakeCon.

Speaking to Eurogamer immediately after the Halo Wars and the Halo Universe panel yesterday at Comic Con 2008 in San Diego, O'Connor, who earlier this year quit his post as Bungie community manager to oversee Halo at Microsoft Games Studios, insisted the franchise was "big enough at this point that it can stand on its own".

"You can do a HaloCon. Nothing on [the scale of Comic Con], but you could bring a few hundred people just to see a Halo thing. We're really not worried about Halo's ability to stand out and shine in the future. There's plenty of stuff coming."

OK I love my xbox and think Halo is a fine game but am I the only one who finds it ironic to have a thread called "Microsoft hints at 'Halocon' event", DIRECTLY ABOVE (if you have it sorted by 360 news) a thread titled "MS: We'll "Explore Not Exploit" Halo"?

For the record I will likely get Halo Wars and am up for another Halo FPS or TPS or Tactical shooter or whatever....though Halo is by no means my favorite franchise. I just think the two headlines together are funny.

Um..Sure. As long as i get to see what the new game is about that's good. But as for not exploiting...my ass. I have all the Halo's and the books. But w/e as long as every new Halo related game is at least decent, they will make the moneys.

This is getting a little crazy. Halocon? Seriously? I think this game is bigger in their heads than in the real world, and the love for Halo is on the way out. I own all three of them and its getting repeptitive. However, I would sure as hell buy Halo four. But an event for it?

Sounds like MS still wants the Xbox to be a one game console. They wont hit mass market until they get rid of Halo as the face of Xbox in my opinion.

umm... beating a dead horse doesnt even begin to describe the rediculousness that is the HALO machine.

I mean I like the series and all (the original Halo was a masterpeice) but this is just straight up stupid. MS really is doing everything they can to ruin a great name in gaming.

I realize a lot of you don't like this, and for understandable reasons. But guys you do have to see that th Halo universe has expanded and without too much loss of quality. The Halo books, graphic novel, and comics have all been top notch. Along with Halo Wars coming and and the Peter Jackson game. All of these could be showcased with possibly some machinima or however you spell it such as RvB or others.

Over 8 million sold worldwide, not even a year after its release. Fastest selling game EVER at that. You not liking it does not make it overhyped, something selling that well and still doing as well as it does proved it isn't overhpyed. Stop being a fanboy.

Indeed. Something popular always makes it a target for ridicule from close-minded fan boys.

@ NSG- Im happy for you that you dont like it, but that doesnt change the fact that millions of other people love it. Get off your pedestal.

For the record I still think Halo is one of the funnest games out there, though Ive hardly played it myself since COD4 came out. I think the franchise has a lot of potential, and branching out like they have been with Halo Wars and Chronicles(whatever the hell it is) shows that the series can expand past an FPS.

My hope is that Bungie lets other people expand the series, and moves on to other things. Id be happy with a remake of Marathon with the continuing stories of Master Chief, while other studios work on other games.

For everyone who thinks the series should go away, I think the fact that FF152 is coming out should show that as long as a series keeps up the quality people will keep coming back.

Think whatever you want, but the Halo series is a HUGE part in the legitimacy of the gaming industry in the publics eyes.

If by over-hyped you mean over marketed and made out to be a lot better than it turned out to, then yes Halo 3 is the most over hyped game ever. IBD'sO it should have blown every FPS away, but it didn't and sheeple bought still it cause of the name.

Again, thats YOUR opinion of it. Halo is neither over hyped nor is it overrated. It is what it is, and there are a hell of a lot of people who would disagree with you. I, for one, cant understand why people can stomach the MGS series, but oh well, thats my opinion. Your opinion isnt fact buddy.

If a game doesnt live up to expectations for the gamer then it can be viewed as 'overhyped'

If a game doesnt live up to expectations in $/£ for the companies that expect to make lots then it can be viewed as 'overhyped'.

Each and every Halo so far has done the business for gamers,Bungie and Microsoft.

Thus Halo has never been 'overhyped'.

Halo as a franchise was never over hyped.. but halo 3 was "hyped" not just hyped.... OVER hyped.

The hype had the power to force belief, control the critics, and reap in massive "non-diserved profits" also see --> (GTAIV) all by creating momentum from the previous sucsesful game Halo 2 and some from Halo 1. And in the end turned out to be nothing spectacular. Just another shooter in the crowd. The success that Halo 1 and 2 had been achieved only becuase they were in a crowd of unpleasing FPS games and halo 2 was the first to ever compare to PC games fun and precision.

Creating a CON out of only 2 true succesful games and 1 "theoreticly succesful" game is utter crap.

QuakeCon and BlizzCon are good conventions only becuase the CONSTANT ammount of succesful games created. Blizz for example:

Diablo I-II (soon to be III) "made tons of profit and was very fun and addictive franchise"

Warcraft I-III "same as diablo"

World of warcraft "super addictive reaps in millions a year and still to this day"

Starcraft I-II " same as Warcraft"

and Quake for example created the engine super succesfull games such as Q3,COD1-4, ect

I wish the best for this so called HaloCon after the lackluster performance of H3 ALOT of people i know dont even play the game anymore. This Con wont have very many attendees in my opinion and if it does then some people really dont know what a really GOOD franchise is

i know im biased but i have played halo 1-3 and it just gets ma angry how such a generic game gets so much adoration

Let's face it, it's good because it's popular, not popular because it's good.

It's a huge hit with the younger crowd since the younger generation is more impressionable (look at the popularity of Barack Hussein Obama as a good example) and they want to fit in with their friends; they play on Live and have something to talk about at school. It's an excellent social game.

With enough advertising, anyone/thing can be successful, look at Britney Spears. I'm willing to bet she's sold more albums than Jimi Hendrix. Does this mean she's a better artist?

but back in the day everyone had a "symbol" for their machine. Atari? Pac Man, Nintendo? Mario(and many many others) Sega? Sonic etc etc etc. It has been very hard to "re-create" that, or so to say, have a symbol that everyone knows what they are looking at it when they see it.

Master Chief is the new Mario, to an extent. Everyone knows what Halo is. Everyone knows when they look at Master Chief they are looking at a microsoft product. This is very important for companies, and also something that Sony has never been able to pull off, and they have been at this for over 12 years now.

Like it or not, Master Chief and Halo are icons. Deal with it.

I was going to say something along these lines, every console has icons. Lord knows Nintendo milks their icons, as does Sony. Microsoft is just catching up, in that regard.

But, they (Microsoft) need 2-3 more unique icons, otherwise, the more Halo's they release, the more people (like myself) will think it's a "shooter" console. Diversify. Use the money to create new IPs instead of stealing GTA/FF, etc.

17 - I don't know about this being a regular thing.
If Microsoft wants to make up for pulling the Halo announcement with an event for fans(and Bungie), I think it would be a step in the right direction. They could actually have the Bungie game, Halo Wars and some gameplay from the Peter Jackson game. Let Bungie show the films they made for E3 and maybe make another Landfall type live action film. Provide some free stuff for people to win an MS foots the bill for everything.
