Microsoft: E3 Not Big Enough Stage For Halo Announcment

Ripten writes:

"In a recent interview, Microsoft's Senior Vice President of Interactive Entertainment, Don Mattrick, responded to Bungie's public disagreement with the company's decision to put off their E3 Halo announcement. Mattrick was quoted saying:

'One of the things that we decided, when you have the number one game in the world as we have in Halo, it's a safe prediction that if we do a separate event for Halo, that it'll be well-attended, well covered …'

As a member of the press who was in attendance for the Microsoft's press conference, I find their reasoning absurd. The attendance numbers were announced well in advance of the event, and yet they waited until the last moment before pulling the rug out from underneath Bungie."

Ya letting people know about the next Halo via two pissed off companies yelling at each other is a much better way to announce a game.

It certainly seems strange that MS would pull this game from the E3.
They have their reasons and I am sure they are good.

We shall see!

1.5 - I'm sorry but Halo 4 on 360 would be a waste
They need to make it on the X Box 720 for a HUGE difference graphically, and a format with bigger space..

Hey, they were fine with making Halo 3 marginally better than Halo 2, which also was marginally better than Halo 1. So why not make Halo 4 right now?

In this instance though, Bungie became a casualty of MS's ego. I wonder if this had more to do with Square wanting the spotlight.

3.3 - Sigh.
Microsoft will probably announce it from an alternate reality, in the future and from a space station. MS really need to get off their high horse with the Halo series! A new IP is sorely needed.

Why cant MS act normal for once, they have been talking a little to much lately, I mean i want to see what would happen if this turns out to be something other than Halo 4, and the thing about it is why hype it up way before its announced and they say something like 2010.

6 - I have to agree
E3 is not the powerhouse it was. Riticello is right: It is no longer viable for publishers because of the reduced media coverage.

Let's wait and hope though, because there are rumours that the ESA might surprise everyone very soon with an open E3....

Isn't the number one game in the world Mario? I think the mario franchise has sold more than any of the other franchises.

Edit, No it's Mario. I looked it up. Mario has sold 195 million units world wide beating every other game franchise. It's funny, out of the ten top selling game franchises, nintendo has 4 of them. Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Pokemon

@deeznuts, you got a point. So, we will look at this by reviews. Zelda 64 is the highest reviewed game of all time. It is a 99 on meta critic. So, I guess it's the best game ever. the only way to judge something being the best is with facts. So I see it as either by sells or reviews.

E3s not big enough because they dont make it big enough. All E3 needs is awesome announcements. It doesnt need the big stages or lights or babes. Give E3 awesome announcments and it will be huge.

I have to agree with you. They cant cite the lack of press, because the entire damn thing was press.

No pure "gamers" were allowed in, and last I checked most gamers don't have lavish means to get the word out about games, so I think this reasoning is BS.

This is like a slap in the face to E3 and the ESA.

So if Microsoft had always known they would not be announcing anything Halo-related this E3, why weren't Bungie informed to save them the time and effort that went into their preparations for the announcement?

Something doesn't add up here. Honestly smells like some kind of mess, PR stunt. I'm sure internally Bungie is furious with Mattrick

I was surprised that Bungies announcement was canceled by MS.

For a second party developer MS has bungie on a very short leash.

Compare that to insomnaic Sony treats them well.

16 - IMO
i think the only reason microsoft didn't show it
was that they didn't want it to steal FFXIII's
thunder. But to be honest I think that for the
most part they just wanted to rub it in sony's
face, because IMO halo would have made more of an
impact to the 360's main audience than FFXIII.

but i could be wrong, it's happened a million times
before. :)

E3 is a big enough stage for any game to be announced. Halo isn't anything special.... without Halo the Original Xbox would have been a flop, no wonder Microsoft is treating this game like it means everything to them.

Halo isn't the best game in the world, it's one of the most overhyped and overrated games in the world. Halo is the best game to Microsoft because without it, the Xbox brand would have died off before it even got started.

18 - I played
Halo 1, 2, and 3. I think the storyline is well done even though it's not as unique as others. The gameplay is fun and i think that's what saves Halo in the end.

Stil, I agree that halo is indeed incredibly overhyped. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but it's not the best game ever made as some of you make it out to be.

I can't agree enough. Don't get me wrong, Halo 2 on XBoxLive was the most fun I've ever had online, but the game itself is nothng special. Its redeeming quality is that everything works, but it is by no means innovative, original, or groundbreaking.

stuck in the middle of the halo, MS bs.

They're my favorite developer because they marathon, arguably the most influention and innovative fps ever made.

COD will be the most influncial in the FPS genre but really

Marathon? Why is it the only ppl that say that are HALO freaks? Its ok because i say all 3rd shooters should copy Socom

but when i hear ppl talk about the history of FPS's its the same three games

DOOM
Wolfinstien
Golden Eye

i never hear Marathon

Thats just MS hyping one of the only devs they OWN

LeonSKennedy4Life - 520 days 7 hours ago
25.1 - what?
I understand what you mean...

...however...

...Marathon wasn't that good. The graphics, for the time, were extremely impressive. I just never regarded it as innovative. The storyline was ohkay...but it was a blatent rip-off of the early science fiction novels/Alien movies/DOOM. When Marathon came out, it gathered a fanbase...until people realized the Mac wasn't for gaming. By the time people knew it was "there", we'd all gone back to DOOM/Wolfenstein. It's like how most people say Halo was innovative...when Tribes was staring us RIGHT IN THE FACE!!!
